TX-500 and DigiRig Interface / Cables - Any Guides?

Jonathan Sarge

I just ordered a set of the TX-500 cables and the newest version of DigiRig interface today. Has anyone put out or posted a 'how to' for the configuration of the radio and WSJT-X? I'll be wanting to try this on some SOTA ops soon, if someone has a guide out there - it would be a tremendous help!

Thanks in advance!

I have used it on the Mac and PC. - I put together a cheat sheet for the Mac , very similar to PC

Thanks for the reply! This is certianly going to help me out! ???

I always struggled adjusting the input volume on my Macbook, because I had totally forgotten about?RF Menu 07 submenu DIG. Thanks a lot for the cheat sheet! Digirig is the perfect companion to the TX-500.

Still not sure if it's my radio or a common issue, but you may want to set your meter to power when setting your output volume. I found there is a very fine line between getting the radio to actually register power output and spurious emissions on the panadapter display.

Kirby K4CAN?

from Lab599 support:

During transmission, additional peaks on the panadapter appear when the input is overloaded by the audio signal.
The correct level can be set by enableing the MIC level indication on the TX-500 display (METR function). The level should approach the maximum but not exceed it.

Marc, will you allow the pdf to be shared on the TX-500 facebook group?

Many thanks.

Sure - here's my windows version

Thanks Marc for sending over. Did you ever figure out Vara??

I sent an email to Denis. Here is his reply:

Does Vara offer PTT by RTS option? I think I saw the option in someone's screenshots.
Worst case scenario we can disconnect the PTT line from Digirig's socket and rely on CAT for PTT.

Work has gotten busy so i have yet to investigate further.

Yes I got VARA HF running pretty quickly

set up just like FT8, be aware that the TX-500 switches out of DIG mode w VARA when frequency changes, you have to manually switch it back

i can attach my Winlink VARA notes later

Awesome. Glad you got it tow work! I would appreciate you sending them over.?

Thanks again and 73,

Steve - this was the radio setup I used for the TX-500
with Winlink Express and VARA HF

I tested this pretty well, I can change target stations
and successfully send/receive email

caveats - any time you open the radio settings in the VARA HF session - it will reset the Rig to USB, you have to reset that manually each time to DiG

Thanks Marc. The digital landscape is all pretty new to me as I have been mainly a CW op. I appreciate you taking the time to share your insight as I climb this steep hill of learning. Ha!

Here's an updated version on my. TX-500/WSJT/Digirig/Windows cheat sheet

which now becomes the?

"TX-500/WSJT/Digirig/Windows or Pi" cheat sheet

Joshua Ellis has provided screen shots of his Raspberry Pi WSJT setup with Digirig. I've added these to the end of the doc?

Comments on your fine step-by-step document.
1. In my WSJT Settings, Radio the Transmit Audio Source box was not grey'd out and Rear/Data is selected.
2. Following detailed instructions written by Denis at Digirig, I was able to rename the sound adapter so it's not just the generic driver/chipset name.? I have many sound adapters so renaming is important to me.
3. I had to set WSJT Radio, Mode,? NONE or the radio was being told to go to USB mode every time a new transmit cycle was started.? WSJT CAT is using Ham Radio Deluxe as the app in control of the serial port (Network Server 127.0.0.1:7809).
4. Tiny typo on pg 3. "Split - Fake it on None" I think should read "Split - Fake it or None".

After all these steps I'm still not working correctly.? I only see TX audio "spike" when in USB mode even though we're using the REM/DATA port for digital audio. Also the 09 Gain-DIG has no effect on the incoming audio levels. More Testing to be done after my Saturday morning NVIS Net on 3.890 LSB in SF Bay Area.

Thanks for the comments- I will review, play around a little to see if I can replicate your findings and reissuue
?
if you can forward the link of instructions to rename the audio device- I'll add that

Links as requested.

Here is a zip file of some screen shots I made as I went through the steps.? Note that I learned to set the Digrig sound adapter I'll try to find the steps that go with these pics.
