Yes, check out the group. A number of the packs overcharge the cells. It would seem they do have a fix for it but apparently the USA service shop is not ready to receive them yet for repair.

You can leave the battery pack connected but it's not how you power the radio for a firmware update because it will not stay on. Instead, supply power to the radio via its 12v connection. Detailed

Don't forget that phones middle point (ground) has supply voltage /2 DC and must be isolated from common ground (transceiver and mic). That's the reason why phones jack sleeve is unconnected in Lab599
