Mufflers
Don Stark
I have a muffler installed on my 23. I got muffler from Hi-Tech
Exhaust in Irvine, Ca. John Grudynski is the owner and has put mufflers on many racing cars. My car has a standard 4 1/2 in. dia muffler with a 2 in. through pipe that is about 14 in. long. This system fits most small 4 cyl engines. I have not noticed a performance reduction since installation. I am racing this weekend at Laguna Seca and will take the opportunity to take some good pictures of the installation and some measurments for your information. John at Hi-Tech is willing to work with you in the installation but you know race cars. The installation all depends on the headers installed and what else is going on with the exhaust presently installed in the car. In my car, the headers come into the collector at the floor of the car right next to the bell housing. From there the pipe went uphill to exit over the tube that the rear body is hinged on. It went straight out of the body at that point. I just made the same shape from the collector aft with the muffler can located just behind the axle coupling and slanting up. It is held in place with a tube that is attached to the large bolt that holds the rear bracket in place and then goes down to a flange that is the same diameter of the muffler and fits over the top of the muffler. The muffler is held to this flange with a hose clamp. It all seems to work well and I have had no problems passing the 92 db limits at Laguna Seca. Hi-Tech can be reached at 12 Hammond Drive, Suite 202, Irvine, Ca. 92618. His phone is 949-581-2181. I will post the measurements and photos after this weekend. Don Stark, |

Good topic and very timely! CSRG has an opportunity to race at Laguna Seca in the Fall but they are imposing a 92db sound limit. Hope someone in this group has some pearls of wisdom regarding mufflers because we both can learn from their experience. Gary From: "elliscahn" <redbaron33@...> Reply-To: L23Registry@... Muffler for Lotus 23 T/C
elliscahn
Hello to all,
First the good news is that we have been granted one last and final year of racing at our local track here in Denver Second Creek Raceway. The bad news is all cars are required to have some type of muffler. Don Stark was kind enough to forward fotos of his custom made muffler system on his 23 T/C. A very nice and clean set up indeed. Does anyone else have any ideas concerning muffling a 23 T/C? Respectfully, Ellis Cahn |

I have seen your car and spoke with John Anderson about it and the problems you had when first driven. I have been to John's shop a couple of times. He is a very nice man and will doing some upcoming work on a Lotus 51 for me and my buddy, the owner. Is that your 19 in his shop as well? 开云体育Hi Mike..
?
Yes it is my 19.? I purchased the car in August from Canada.? It is quite original and was a famous car in its time... I have only driven it once in practice about a month ago and John is going through it to make it some improvements,....including getting rid of that ugly roll bar.
?
John is one of the best around and the best part is that he and the guys with him are very honest.....and hard working.
?
Good luck with the 51

Your idea about coming to the Historics sounds great. Be sure and keep us informed of your plans if they come together. The sports racer group, should it be accepted again for this year's Historics, includes a number of 23's. We could easily arrange a 23 Group gathering while attending the race to swap information, stories, lies, etc. Start planning now! I have the wobblys also.....sent one of mine rear ones, which I think is 7 inches, to Don Schaffer who had it duplicated.....so folks can now get the wobblys in the wider sections easily.

We have three wonderful tracks around Northern Calif..... Sears Point, Thunderhill and Laguna Seca...so if ya bring your cars over....plan on trying to run with us at other events too.

Good to hear about vintage racing on the other side of the globe. Isn't it great to just arrive at the race track and race, not have to do major repairs on the car? I don't use the 23 much since I crashed it in 2001, I keep it for shows and international races ie with David Piper and his group. However, I use my "look-a-like-23" which we call the "ELF 89", in sports car/Lotus racing in South Africa. The car was named after the the guys who built it in 1989 (Eric, Louis, Fred) mainly for endurance races. It has had a very good history, until July 2004 when I ran out of luck, and wrote off the car (ouch! concrete walls are not forgiving!) We are building a new one (will be called ELF 05, I think, despite the fact that Fred has been diagnosed with cancer this week and may not see the end of the project). I pulled out the old faithful, the original 23, (I have owned it since 1974), in an attempt to finish the season, even though the sports cars are running modern equipment, and are very fast. I managed to run a set-up practice, approx 30 laps, race meeting (2 heats + 2 practice + qualifying) in Cape town, approx 55 lap, Phakisa near Johannesburg (2 heats, + 3 practice + qualifying) approx 70 laps, and Cape Town again a few weeks later, also about 55 laps. The car never missed a beat, and required almost no maintenance or repairs! Fantastic handling and reliability, despite its age, gave good results. Approx 210 racing laps in a 40 year old car! Not bad, and we managed 2nd in the Index championship, 4th overall even though we had no points for the crashed race and the next one because we were not ready! Re: 23

Ellis:
I agree with Bill Steagall, try to keep the car as original as possible. I know everyone has their own objectives when vintage racing, but after all, it is VINTAGE racing and the idea is to preserve the cars in the state they were when the first raced. I had one race veteran of many years stop by my paddock spot to chat at the Historics and he said, "good to see you haven't over-restored your car the way some of these fellows do. Nickel plated frames, electronic instruments, modern seats, etc, etc, are just a bit over the top." Of course, your vintage race club might have something to say about that as well. Our club uses the SCCA General Rules of Competition for 1967 as the "eligibility bible" if you will and have declined to accept cars that are not period correct. Can't be hurting our entries too much as we average over 150 cars per event with a high of 250 this past October at Infineon. The other advantage is you get to see cars as they really were which I guess is the whole point of what we do. Otherwise we'd be out there in Spec Racer Fords or something of the sort. Looking forward to seeing your finsihed car. Gary From: "elliscahn" <redbaron33@...> Reply-To: L23Registry@... To: L23Registry@... Subject: [L23Registry] 23 Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2005 20:13:00 -0000 |

Hi to all and wishing everyone a happy healthy prosperous and
successful racing year. I have to agree that there needs to be more chit chat for our members. Why? Because there is so much info out there and who knows it better than we 23 owners! A brief update on my 23. I had to cut out the rear fender skirts to race with Dunlop FF tires, and now with our local fiberglass Guru an avid lotusphile He is restoring the fender skirts and some other spider repair. I hope to be able to paint the car red and place the original livery of Arciero Brothers Racing on the side. I am starting to get excited. Any comments? Ellis |
Using the 23 again
Don Stark
Eric,
Good to hear about your adventures with your 23 this year. It appears that you are pretty quick in your car. Sorry about bending your replica. I agree with you about the walls. I was at Phoenix International Raceway last year and it is an oval with a sports car course that uses part of the oval and then the infield. There is nothing but concrete to hit everywhere. I wasn't comfortable at all. Coming off the straight going close to 100 mph, the apex of the left hander is just concrete. Can't make a mistake at all. The 23 is amazingly fast. At the first race this year, I was in a group of Can Am cars, FIA 2L sports cars, a 935, etc. I finished the race on Sat in 5th and actually passed a Can Am car on the start. On Sunday, the big cars were much quicker but I started 5th and finished something like 10th. Not bad since I was running on Dunlop L series tires. (Hard as rocks and very narrow.) It is a fun car and we run with a fun group here in California. Let's here more of everyones adventures with their cars! Don Stark |
