Re: Comprehensive List of Kresy Refugees to Africa and beyond

Dear Julek,

Thank for your offer.

The list is in the hands of the archive department of a large
organisation in Holland.
They tell me that they can scan it.
If it does not work out, I will come back to you.

Kind regards,

Bert Bakker

Re: Welcome Henryk Dekker

Julian S. Plowy

Henryk,

I am not sure what A4 size is .
Please measure in inches and advise. When scanning if the page is to big
please scan the page in two, three or four sections. Please scan the pages
in JPG picture mode.I have a program that will stitch the page together.

As far as the type being to big I have never run into that problem. You can
always reduce the size of the page therefore reducing the size of the type.

Normally in typed text the size of the text is to small and the scanned page
has to be made bigger to view the text properly. When you do this you lose
resolution and sometimes you can't read the text.

The solution to this is to scan the page at the highest resolution possible
and therefore you can increase the page size and then be able to read the
text properly. You should always scan at the highest resolution with photos.
Later after they are scanned and saved you can always copy them and reduce
their size for e-mail sending.

If you use low resolution you can't increase the page size much to be able
to read the text properly.
Please let me know if you need any additional help.

Julek

Hello Stefan,
probably I send my previous answer to you to wrong address. I have a book
which I bought 20 years ago in polish bookshop (ceased to exist) in Sydney
for 50 australian cents. This book was printed in Cairo in 1000 copies only
in
1945. Obviously authors intended to produce limited edition book. Colour
illustration is covered with special tissue to prevent colour fading and
chemical reaction with the previous and next pages. Type in the book is
pretty
small and printed with ochra colour ink. Its title "1942-1944 Pulk Ulanow
Karpackich". First page started with photos of generals: Sosnkowski,
Anders,
sir Harold Alexander and sir Oliver Leese. It is a set of articles written
by:
Stanislaw Zakrzewski, Adolf Bochenski, Melchior Wankowicz, Bohdan
Korodziejewski, Michal Paciorek, ks Jan Malinowski, Tadeusz Staniszewski,
Martha Hemingway (in English), Tadeusz Wittlin, Juliusz Mieroszewski, Adolf
Bochenski (his second article) and Emil Mentel. The book has an official
or
institutional flavour. Some people are mentioned by function and initials,
but
stil it contain tens of names. The book is slightly bigger than A4 size. It
has 48
pages plus front and back cover and one back inside of the cover page. I am
afraid that my scanner will trim some part of illustrations however text
should
come complete. I am concerned that to make text readable, the size of scan
of
the page will be to big to present on the screen. I wonder what resolution
was
used for Polska Walczaca list of names? It is similar in size of type.
Kind regards

An interesting Fact

Having just finished reading Antony Beevor's epic book "Berlin - The
Downfall 1945", I thought I would share this very interesting fact:

Apparently the Russian General in charge of a Soviet occupied and
recently defeated Germany, was entrusted with 10 NKVD regiments with
which to ensure order and police their bitter enemy. The General in
charge of the "supposed allied territory of Poland" received 15 NKVD
regiments, which were used to "concentrate the greatest repressive
force."

As the book says "this perhaps was the best indication of the truth
behind Stalin's assertion at Yalta that the Soviet Union was
interested in the creation of a mighty, free and independent Poland."

Dear Linda and other readers,

I hope to be able to make the list available shortly.
The format is difficult to scan but it looks as if I have found
somebody who can do the trick.
Please bear with me a little longer yet.

The list also includes people who went to South Africa.

Thanks for your patience.

Hello Stefan- I hope you are well- I am Chris Gladun's widow and I want to thank you very much for the tribute you did for Chris on the KresySiberia website-I made copies of i tand gave it to several of our friends. As you are aware I worked with Henryk Sokolowsk to sort and preserve all of Chris historical documents. His family and friends are very grateful at the support of the people in the group. Chris left very specific instructions before he had surgery in March 2002 about suggestions to continue the website and important documents. At that point we didn't even know of he would survive the surgery- as it turned out he lived for another year. ?As you can imagine the last two years have been very difficult for those of us close to Chris. ??I'm sorry I did not write sooner but I moved last summer and just recently got a new email service through work.

Thank you again- please email if you get the chance. Best wishes for the festive season and the coming year.

Just in case you are still having problems, you need to paste the
ENTIRE site name in order to access the photo album.

For anyone familiar with the area (now or previously)the naval
college was off Gorsey Lane / Holly Lane in Great Wyrley and was
there between 1945-1947, from where it then re-located to Lilford
Hall, Undle, Northamptonshire until its eventual closure in 1948.
