Public Reading of Polskie Chlopcy
Wanda Sawicki
I had passed along a copy of Hania Kaczanowska's poem "Polskie Chlopcy" to
my parents, and they took it to the Polish Hall today for the Remembrance Day dinner. It was read as part of the program, and apparently everyone was quite moved...hardly a dry eye in the house. Many asked for copies. My mother expressed everyone's gratitude (for being recognized, understood and cared about) to me over the phone as soon as they got home. I'm so sorry I wasn't able to be there to witness this, but just wanted to let you all know about this, that when we share our work, as Hania has done, the effects can ripple out quite far. Many thanks, Hania, well done! Wanda |

It would be nice to be able to research the exact location of this land and perhaps use your holiday home as a base though this sort of trip would take a lot of planning. I would also be interested if in your view their may be a possibility that my mums family may still be able to claim this land.If so from which government. I look forward to you reply. Zjazd Wolyniakow ?
Has anyone heard of former resident of Wolyn which is
to take place in Poland next year ? I just heard scant information and was wondering whether anyone else knows more. Ciekaw jestem czy ktokolwiek wie cos na temat zjazdu Wolyniakow ktory ma sie odbyc w przyszlym roku w Polsce. Zaledwie slyszalem ze cos takiego ma sie odbyc, ale nic dalej. First, I'd like to add my belated sympathies to Julian on the loss of his home.
How horrible. My thoughts are with him and his family at this difficult time. Also, I'd just like to say that though I've been very quiet (my life is rather turbulent right now, cutting back my computer time), I have been avidly reading this list. It's so wonderful to belong to a group of people who truly understand my family's history. Not many people I know have any idea - I just tend not to talk about it. Being amongst those who have suffered similar losses has helped me understand my late father and his family a lot better. My Babcia used to talk a little about Siberia etc, but not much. I never knew my Dziadek as he died soon after being released from prison in 1941. To the leaders of this group - thank you for bringing us together and providing a place where history remains alive. So often these days, people just want to forget and look forward. Once again, dziekuje bardzo. Teresa ----- Teresa Basinski Eckford teresa.eckford@... |

Michael. Well done . Viewed the video last night, well put together and
Henry's Sokolowski narration is very good. Some poor images, but they are old clips or may be I need to make some adjustments to my video. Good luck with your next project. Re: Norman Davies
Hello
Yes you are right. Bradford University DID have an MA in East European Studies and research dept Tom Lane was the 'Polish' expert who has now retired. The department has now been amalgamated and no longer offers this MA. There are, or I suspect very many who are still intersted and would, given the opportunity like to pursue studies in this and other areas of Polish his and herstory. The sad thing is as you say that any evidence is fast becoming rare, for many reasons , some which have been well discussed heer and in the film etc . The ones who experienced it all at first hand are literally a dying breed or elderly and incapable. Bye 4 now Hela. Re: Norman Davies
I'd like, if I may, to comment on the issues raised in this thread.

Here in Great Britain, when considering Polish history and particulary the deportations of Poles by the Soviets, one needs to view things from the British perspective. In Britain there are very few centres of excellence specialising in Polish history and Polish affairs. I have not done any exhaustive research on this issue, but to the best of my knowledge there are only several universities in Britain with strong Polish teaching and research interests. They include: The London School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies, and I think the universities of Glasgow and Stiring in Scotland and the University of Oxford. There are no doubt a few more, but they will be a small proportion of the whole. Norman Davies is a leading expert on Polish affairs in Britain. Relatively speaking he is probably more familiar with the deportations than any other expert on Polish affairs in Britain. Of course, in comparison with other experts in Europe, he may - or may not - be that familiar with the deportations. Nevertheless he is highly regarded in Britain (and Poland) and is someone that it will be good to have on our side. The suggestion to write a book on the Polish-Soviet deportations, in a similar vein to Anne Applebaum's "Gulag" is of course an excellent one. There are however several major obstacles to the successful completion of such an undertaking, namely: 1. The apparent paucity of official and unoffial information on this subject in Britain and other European nations, (and I dare say in North America too). 2. The apparent non-existence of a British university department with strong (or even any) research interest in this subject. 3. The lack of any official organisation in Britain with interest in this subject. 4. The rapidly expiring first generation of deported Poles, and with them their stories and anecdotal evidence, not to mention the loss of relics and documents brought with them from the 2nd Polish Republic. 5. The lack of information in the old Soviet blok states, or where information exists, the difficulty in gaining access to it and abstracting it from the mass of non-relevant information. 6. The cost, organisation, logistics and backup in undertaking such a project would be hugh, and would require significant backing and financial support. It is partly for these reasons that we are trying to secure backing from various bodies, such as the British and Polish governments, to establish a "Virtual Polonia" focussing (although not exclusively) on the Polish deportations. We need to attract government bodies, universities and second and third generation Polonia. Having someone of the calibre of Norman Davies on board would be a great asset. And of course, if we could secure some funding, via a foundation of some sort, such a book, or indeed series of books, could be attempted with almost a guarantee to succeed. Anyway, this is my opinion. George Neisser

Re: Norman Davies (George's post)
George,
I feel that Norman Davies is the leading Polish historian in the world today.? If he is not THE leading historian, then he is certainly one of the few leading Polish historians worldwide.? However, Norman Davies is already a well known, published author of more than one Polish history.? I seriously doubt that he needs our help with funding.? Of course, I am sure that all group members who are researching or working on one project or another would be willing to share or provide any information he requires, should he choose to write the book.? I have not read Gulag yet, but it was my impression that this book was written about ALL deportations to Siberia and other parts of the USSR/Russia throughout history, and not only the deportations occurring during World War II, even though they reached their peak during the war. I agree with what you are saying.? There is much work that has to be done to tell the world our story. Eve Jesionka Jankowicz USA?? |
