Re: Soviet archives requests
Thank you Stefan.? I have written to Alexander.? I don't know if I have enough information for a search, but I have my fingers crossed!!? Unfortunately, the one person who is still alive, was only 6 when the family was taken, and she remembers very little.? She isn't even really sure of where she was born!
Thanks again!

Hi Jan
I believe that the critical information needed to search for a person's records are: name, names of parents (especially. father's), birthdate, and place of residence.? Ideally, dates of deportation and region deported to.? What ever you can provide will be a clue.
I suggest that you e-mail Alexander directly at gurpolcom@..., but if you get any results please share the news with us!
Good luck,

Dear Stefan,
Well, I answered your first letter, before I read this one!! I think I understand now.? Do you have to know the name of the camp your relative was sent to, to ask for a search?

Hi Jan and group
Thanks for the recent messages.? Messages may sometimes appear out of context because members could e-mail each other privately, and then may choose to share a discussion "in progress" with the group because it becomes of broader interest.
In this case, I think that the discussion of Uralsk and Semipalatinsk labour camp records was initiated by Mark Terech, in reference to his family deported there.? Alexander heads the Polish Committee of the Memorial group in Moscow, and has helped several of us to obtain deportation and camp records and "certificates" from the old Soviet archives.
Here is a hint for members.? You can review ALL the messages ever sent to the group on our website.? There is even a search function for key terms.? So, for example, if you go to the Messages link? on our web page and search for "Uralsk", it brings up all messages with this reference.
Hope that helps!

I must have missed something here, what certificates?? What signatures?? I don't get to read mail every day, but I also see answers to questions that I have never seen!? I am missing something somewhere!

I have been involved in organizing action for the compensation form Russia for forcible deportation and slave labour of polish people in many Russian prisons and labour camps. The efforts for compensation from the German government have been successful. We believe we should do the same. We are accepting applications from anyone that was deported to Siberia and other parts of Soviet Russia from 1939 to 1957 . We have registered a non profit corporation under the name of "Former Polish Political Prisoners in USSR (Canada) Inc. with the right to carry out our business in the other parts of the world.
We are in the process of collecting applications from former prisoners or their descendants. The main objective right now is to collect as many applications as we can. The application should contain the name of the person who was deported to USSR, the place of imprisonment in Russia , present address for contact ,signature and the date signed. This information will be recorded and presented to the polish government, and if need be we will engage legal experts to present the case to the International Court in Hague. Right now we are gathering intelligence as to what compensation Poland received from Russia in the past. We have been informed that Russia paid Poland $20 million US in the past and another $52 million in l990.'s If this information if true than all polish peoiple who have been enslaved should have been compensated, not only those who returned to Poland after the war.
I have initiated the organization of this claim , and now we have elected Mr Richard Wiktor Lacish to be the president and proceed with the legal action. The organization of Sybiracy in Florida are in support and will be joining our efforts. We will be appealing in near future to all former prisoners in USSR to join and to send their application. to Former Polish Political Prisoners in USSR (CANADA) INC, Wanda Truksa, 451 The West Mall, Ste 605, Etobicoke, Ontario M9C lGl. tel: 416 621 5221 and my e mail address is known to the Group.
I also request everyones help. What we need is the listing of polish newspapers published in every country to advertise our action and any achives that hold detailed records of the deportations. I think The Group could be of great help in publicising this action, and collecting the applications.
Well that is all for now. I hope I aroused everyones interest and it looks to me that the Group is well qualified to help in this action. I will let you know when I will receive the video. I would like to know what return is expected from the showing
The president of the organization lives in Montreal, where there is a fair group of polish people and most of them are survivors of the russian labour camps and prisons. I trust my message is not too long. Any more information I will pass along in the future

Bortkiewiecze powiat Oszmina woj. Wilno
Hi Joe Have you heard from anybody? Any progress? I hope this gives you a clue. While I could not find the village in Shtetlseeker (which is usually very good), I did find Asmjany about 15km Southeast of Wilno and just inside Belarus (Belorussia). This was part of Poland between the wars, and a good chance it was the town of the Oszmina county you referred to. Have you tried the PolandBorderSurnames group with this? I don't know where the archives or records for Wilno province ended up after the war, and whether you need to look in Vilnius, Minsk or back in Poland. Did you contact the person in Wilno suggested by Wladyslaw? Moj znajomy mieszka w LITWA. zygmunt@... (from Wladyslaw Czapski) Also, did you contact the army records office in England for the 2 Corpus, who may have more information on your father in their records? Good luck. -- Stefan Wisniowski Moderator, Kresy-Siberia Sydney Australia From: Joe Zelwietro <deplib@...> Reply-To: Kresy-Siberia@... Date: Thu, 11 Oct 2001 11:10:13 -0700 To: Kresy-Siberia@... My name is Joe Zelwietro (actually it's Z with a dot above it). I have been exploring my heritage and my father's life before he settled in Canada. I am using the Internet as a discovery tool because my father is dead. It was especially sad, because he died before Poland had regained her freedom in 1989, but I know he was not unique in that respect. My father was a good man, but he was reluctant to speak of the time between 1939 and 1942. He was one of the many who was taken prisoner by the Soviets from Wilno area and ended up a decorated soldier in the Polish 2nd Corps, but also a man without a country.
I want to go there and see where he is from and show my children where their grandfather came from. While there are many things I want to know I am joining this list with the hope that other members can help me with two specific questions.
Is there anybody who has knows a Zelwietro, Zelwietr, Zelwetra, or Zelwetro? (Remember that's Z with a dot)
Where is my father's village now? He was born in Bortkiewiecze powiat Oszmina woj. Wilno I know this area is in Lithuania now, but that's all I know.
If anybody can help I would be greatly indebted,

Wladyslaw reports that a copy of the Anders archives from the Hoover Institution are now at the Warsaw "Modern" Archives (500 pages worth), but that only 30% are accessible to the public - the rest have not yet been "processed". Any idea why that may be?
I know that the records were all copied on microfilm last year and presented to the Polish Government as a "homecoming" present.

Re: deportation traslation
The "collection of statements" from Siberaki to
which Stefan refers was partially documented in Jan Gross and Irena
Grudzinska-Gross book, "War Throuth Children's Eyes".? Very
poignant.

that there is a write-up on it in the Hoover Institution, Anders Archives,
which had a collection of statements from the Siberia deportation survivors on
what happened in each powiat (county). -- Stefan

Re: Stolen Childhood : A Saga of Polish War Children
It's an excellent book and I am delighted to see it again available! Worth having and sharing with parents. Written by Fr. Lucjan Krolikowski from his personal perspective. includes photographic images. Some gaps and errors that are easily corrected with access to accurate archival documents which were not accessed for the book. As a researcher, i found the book to be most useful. Helen.

The post-WWII adventures of 150 Polish children deported to Russian and ultimately rescued by a Franciscan priest who was branded a kidnapper by a Communist government.
Stolen Childhood is the story of what happened to some 380,000 Polish children who, with their families, were rounded up by Stalin's orders in 1939 and deported into Asiatic Russia. Lucjan Krolikowski, a young seminarian also deported there, shared and witnessed the suffering of his fellow Poles.
Freed by an "amnesty," he joined the Polish Army, and when it moved to the Middle East, Lucjan resumed his theology studies, pronounced his vows, and became a chaplain to a Polish military hospital in Egypt. Reassigned to refugee camps in East Africa, Fr. Lucjan and the wandering Polish children met again in 1947--a meeting that began a long and loving relationship.
In 1949 when the Warsaw Communists claimed guardianship of the Polish orphans in Africa and demanded their repatriation, Fr. Lucjan was forced into a world of international intrigue. Called by the Communists "a kidnapper on an international scale," to his orphans he was the Good Shepherd who led them to Canada, where he helped his charges overcome the theft of their childhood and become secure adults in a new world. Stolen Childhood is the book of memories he wrote for them, and a cautionary history for people of good will.

Re: From Linder Stachnik in England
If you look at an atlas of Russian resources, you will find there are many salt mines, including, especially in the far east/s.east. Many Poles 'worked' in the south-central asian salt mines. Some also in the n/east. At any university library you should be able to locate any of Martin Gilbert's very good atlases on variations of Russian/Soviet landscape, resources, transportation routes, etc. Helen.

According to his Polish Army Records, 'he was deported to within the former USSR in 1940 [exact date and place unknown]'. Family stories tell of 'Siberia Salt Mines', but as he came from Lwow and was captured there, I begin to wonder! WERE there any Salt Mines in Siberia? There was some Salt Mines near Krakow, I'm told. Could he have been captured at Lwow, sent to a Krakow Mine/Labour camp, then be released to join the Polish Army being organised at that time? Family stories just don't add up, so I'm trying to take out 'supposition' and re-think the whole thing. Appreciate any guidance from you all.

Re: From Linder Stachnik in England
Linder
Krakow at that time was in the hands of the German Army, so if your
father was captured by the Soviets it's most unlikely
that they would deport him to Krakow. There is the possibility that he
was handed over to the Germans and then sent to Krakow
but that would be highly unlikely as he wound up in Siberia.? As far
as I can tell Germans didn't deport to those parts .
It had to be the Soviets but as to the Salt Mines I can't answer that
question

Hi Steve,
Thank you for your generous offer and thanks to Barbara for her
suggestion. Would it be at all possible to be able to, say, type in a
town name and then have information about that town - some ideas
would be history, number of people deported, where they were deported
to, etc, as well as photo links)? Also, a database with all the names
of the camps with corresponding info could be a useful link, as would
the different associations throughout the world related to our
cause/subject.
Not being a technical wizard it always amazes me how this sort of
thing appears on our screens and I will be truly in awe of anything
that is created.
Don't know if it's at all feasible given my location, but I am happy
to edit/proofread any info before it goes to that great satellite in
the sky. Again, not being a Polish speaker/reader I am at a
disadvantage where it comes to collating information but if I can at
