Joseph Wardzala, who lives in Connecticut, and I have been in touch with him. ?These people were taken to forced labor camps in germany, then spent years in displaced person camps, and finally found new homes either in america, or europe, or other countries....these are the other holocaust survivors, they include polish, gypsies, chechs, any other nation that was persecuted by Hitler and his associates, like Stalin who deported the poles to Siberia......and the only way the world will know about this is if you get your story out and say Hey, this happened and yes, I am a survivor of the Holocaust......
I am not a Jew and most if not all Kresy-Siberia members are non Jews and further they are mostly Christian Catholic/Orthodox/Unite Poles who were deported to the slave labor camps in the USSR or their descendants. There were very few Jews deported to Siberia. I agree wholeheartdly with you on this point, and the reason no one know of the plight of the people in Siberia is because the poles do not moan and groan the way the jewish community does!
By the way, who were the Associates of the Gemans/Nazis???? ?The associate of the Nazis Party was Stalin and his army.....by the way not all germans were nazis.....there were plenty of german who were also persecuted for not embracing the Nazis regime......

If he had ties with the Swiss Army, then it's possible that he volunteered for service with them after being interned but that is doubtful as the Swiss weren't that keen on inducting foreigners into their Army and still aren't

It was not tied to the swiss army. The communist government was imposed in Poland after the Soviets pushed the Germans out of Poland in 1945. What does Hitler have to do with anything?? Edward

Re: but where in Kazakhstan???
Hi Grace, Well, on 19 June 1940, Poland was under a Nazi government in the western half and a Soviet government in the East (where your family seems to have been from). The officially recognised government of Poland was at that time established in London, after the fall of France where it originally fled. This "Government-in-Exile" had control over the Polish Army. I do know that while some units of the Polish Army (especially Air Force) fled the fall of France to England, some units were trapped against the Swiss border and crossed over into neutral Switzerland, becoming interned there.
But this is different than a "student exchange" program!
can anybody else on the list shed some light on this? -- Stefan Wisniowski Moderator, Kresy-Siberia

Dear Stefan,
I note from the undermentioned memo mention of Alexander of "Memorial" and his database which includes details of Archangel.
My father, Edmund Terech and his parents, Stanislaw and Felicja, were deported to Archangel in Spring 1940
Can you advise how to get in touch with Alexander.

a survivor as a person who was displaced, persecuted, and/or discriminated

ghettos this includes, among others, refugees and people in hiding.
Please help us to document survivors who are not yet registered by

This is the information I have on the (ONLY) English translation of the Kresy books:
"Stalin's Ethnic Cleansing in Eastern Poland, Tales of the Deported 1940-1946" ISBN 1 872286 88 7 Price 15.00 incl. postage in UK (postage Europe 3.00, outside Europe 5)
Aavailable from:
CALDRA HOUSE LIMITED 23 Coleridge Street Hove, East Sussex BN3 5AB Tel 01273 772234 Fax 01273 772236 E mail : printing@...
If you look at the home page www.stalinsethniccleansing.com
you can read; - the foreword written by the translator Eric J. Whittle (co-author Bronia Kacperek) - introduction written by Janina Stobniak-Smogorzewska "The Fortunes of the military settlers during 1939-45" Both of which I assume are included in the book.

Paul and Ed There may be a slight misunderstanding on here about the Polish and English versions of the books from the Association of the Families of the Borderland Settlers. I also went through the same confusing process earlier this year; perhaps I can help.
I believe that Elzunia's recent e-mail explains it, but in case it was not clear, there were 2 books in Polish - one dealing with the inter-war period (1921-40), one with the deportation (1940-46). Both books were combined into one English book, but the English book only took on the 2nd books title (1940-46). I believe that what the committee did was combine the memories of the settlements with the memories of the deportation into the same articles. Whilst I have not done a page by page comparison, I believe that the bulk of the English book is from the 2nd Polish book. For example, many of the stories start in 1940. But several also have a few paragraphs on life before then.
So, in short, the English book, while brilliant, likely does not include all the material of the 2 Polish books - especially abridging the first, inter-war book. There is certainly no point in seeking a separate English translation of the 1921-40 book.
Elzunia, have I finally got this right?

Re: Digest Number 17: Books about Kresy Deportations
Hi all,
Just to get the facts straight:
My mother, Danuta Gradosielska (in London) was one of the editors of the first book, "Z Kresow Wschodnich R.P. Wspomnienia z Osad Wojskowych 1921-1940". She has written two articles in this book, pages 231 and 247, describing her life on Osada Krechowiecka, just outside Rowne, Wolyn (now Rivno, Ukraine) My copy of this book was published in 1992, 429 pages.
The second book is a follow-up "Z Kresow Wschodnich R.P. Na Wygnanie Opowiesci Zeslancow 1940-1946" and her article is on pages 178-190 (the last page has a photo of our family, including me!)
These two books were written in Polish and subsequently both books were combined and translated into English, including my mother's articles, in "Stalin's Ethnic Cleansing in Eastern Poland - Tales of the Deported 1940-1946", published almost one year ago. I don't know the name of the translator but I was told he's English (Stefan must know his name, he has a copy of the book)
So I don't understand why you say you can't find these "in the original books". Even if there are later editions I don't think they would have left out any of the original accounts! <<<Janina Stobnik's story does not appear in either.>>> Janina Stobniak-Smogorzewska is my mother's childhood friend from Osada Krechowiecka. She has written the historical introduction to the first book and I believe to "Stalin's Ethnic....." too. I really must get a copy of it myself!
The story on Paul's Kresy page () is my mother's dairy and almost exactly the same as the articles in the above 3 books - I changed them slightly because she was a bit worried about copyright violation. Hope you find it interesting reading.
As a matter of interest, there were 134 plots of land and houses at the Osada. Now there is only one house left - and that's my Mother's!! I visited it a few years ago. Unfortunatly the land was just used as pasture for cows. I was told that no one knew who the land belonged to nowadays, and in any case they didn't have any farm equipment or tools to farm with, they couldn't even afford to buy seeds!

The story on my web page isn't in the book. It's a personal recollection of Elizabeth's mother that Elizabeth kindly allowed me to publish. Both the book titles are at the bottom of the page, the English version is |-------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | From The Eastern Borderlands of Poland, Memories of military settlements | | 1921-1940 | |-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
I do not have the right to question any accounts in these books as my family didn't have to make that terrible journey.

Paul, what is the title of the english version and where did you get it & how much is it. The sample story in the site > is not in the original books of which there were 2 editions, 1996 of 700 p and 1998 of 450 p. Janina Stobnik's story does not appear in either. I also question Tomasz Piesakowski's claim of authorship of the english translation of these collective authiorships. Edward
Thanks Ed, The good news is that I have this book in it's English translation as well as the Polish original. It is called "Stalin's Ethnic Cleansing in Eastern Poland - Tales of the Deported 1940-1946". It is indeed a valuable book.
Marek Duchnowski, a recent member of our group, was responsible for putting the book on the web - and if you visit the site, I'm sure you will agree
that it is a masterpiece!
Go to www.StalinsEthnicCleansing.com for more information on the English version and for information on how to order copies. (Marek, this may be a good time to get the publishers to accept credit cards and/or to accept US funds). Stefan Wisniowski

The best source of information about Kresy is the book "Z Kresow Wschodnich R.P. Na Wygnanie". It is a collection of memories and descriptions of
settlements of 142 survivors of Kresy from almost as many Osady (settlements) on the Kresy. Unfortunately it is only in Polish. I was told once that it is being translated

It is not in . The title there is of course
Stalins Ethnic Cleansing. It is also in the ordering procedure.? There are
references to the Polish version (articles and authors etc) in that URL.
Again, where can I get the ( From The Eastern Borderlands of Poland,
Memories of military settlements? 1921-1940 ) and how much is it.
Thanks
