The "Karamin" is a mistranslation of the russian word. The ship was actually called "Astrakhan". We have an ongoing project that is being worked on to name all the ships in the Ross report.

It is my sad duty to inform you that at 1530 hrs. in hospital in Everett, WA. USA Squadron Leader Witold A. Herbst, formerly of the Polish Air Force passed away peacefully with his wife and grand daughters at his side. He was truly a member of the Greatest Generation and it was an honour and privilege to call him my friend. His funeral Mass will be at 1300 hrs. at St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church in Seattle, USA on Saturday, June 3rd at 1300 hrs. Please keep his family in your prayers, Dziekuje Bardzo.

Fraser's widow Lady Fiona Fraser was presented with the the Knight’s Cross of
the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland by Ambassador Witold Sobkow at the
embassy in London.
“It’s
a huge honour - our only regret is that Peter is not receiving it himself,” she
told Scottish paperThe
Courier.
“I
think he would be very proud of this honour but he probably wouldn’t have
regarded his efforts as particularly outstanding.”
The
Scottish peer was an impassioned promoter of the legacy of General Stanislaw
Maczek, a tank commander who led the First Polish Armoured Division.
Maczek
helped win decisive Allied victories during Operation Overlord, the 1944 Battle
for Normandy, before liberating numerous towns in the lead-up to Germany's
capitulation.
He
ultimately became commanding officer of all Polish forces in the United Kingdom
until their demobilization in 1947.
However,
with a Soviet-backed communist regime installed in Poland, Maczek remained in
the UK alongside thousands of other veterans.
He
ended up working as a barman in an Edinburgh hotel, dying in 2004. Lord Fraser
successfully campaigned for a monument to be erected in the general's honour,
before dying suddenly in 2013 aged 68.?(nh) -

Hello John, again! Yes the entry in the Kalendarz Zolnierza makes it look as if the Pahlevi arrival was on March 31st. But, by crosschecking with my earlier log, attached, I see that?our?arrival in Pahlevi actually ocurred on March 30th. Witam Serdecznie-- I just found this picture of myself and Kilt-maker Mr. William Paul at the Pacific NW Highland Games & Clan Gathering last summer. ?Mr. Paul learned the tailor's trade as a boy from Polish Army veterans who stayed in Scotland after WWII. ?His love of Poland rivals my own and I look forward to seeing him and his wife every summer at the Games. ?I am in the uniform of a subaltern in the 10th Dragoons Regt., 1st Polish Armoured Division. ?This famous Polish division was organized and trained in Lanark, Scotland before landing at Normandy in 1944 and fighting through France, Belgium, Holland, and finally on to Germany where they took the surrender of the German Navy HQ in Wilhelmshaven in 1945. ?After the war many of these men chose a life of exile in Scotland after the war as returning to communist "People's" Poland after the war was not safe for Poles who served with the Western Allies.

On spoken Polish and spoken Gaelic
I loved this bit, from a Wall Street Journal review of The Marches: A
Borderland Journey Between England and Scotland," by Rory Stewart:
>>He wryly remarks upon seeing a sign in Scottish Gaelic that reads
“Welcome to Scotland / Fàilte gu Alba”: “The people who lived on this
spot today, like 99 per cent of Scots, spoke English. Over the last
2,000 years, people here had spoken Cumbrian Welsh, Latin, Northumbrian,
Norman French, and Borders English, but they had never spoken Scottish
Gaelic and they had never called this place Alba. . . . Only 58,000
people in Scotland out of 5 million spoke Scottish Gaelic in 2012;
almost as many spoke Polish; and there were twice as many people in
Scotland of South Asian descent.” Yet the sign is in Gaelic.<<
We see the same signs in Ireland, of course. There are even make-believe
ones, like Telefon for Telephone.
