It is so nice to hear that you have an interest in Polish people -as indeed you studied in Poland-and particular your interest in Kresy Regions. So many people do not know where Kresy are/were and their significance to Poland in the first place and to Europe.Presently we see so much news about that area with the referendum in Belarusia recently and today's elections in Ukraine. Today's Poland and a new member of the European Community is very much involved in those regions -helping and advising people in many ways to decide on their future and freedoms. What a history in that area? The area of constantly shifting boundaries; constant government changes. Polishness still prevails, as I understand.Polish language and religion from Odessa to Lwow to Wilno and Brzesc. Many of our members could apply for the Siberian Cross.
John, could you remind us how to do this? If there is a form, perhaps somebody can scan it and put it into our gallery.. I have a small historical atlas (from my school days) which I have just consulted, and according to a map dated 1494, the Polish- Lithuanian commonwealth did indeed stretch as far south as the Black Sea, and included the area that was to become known as Odessa. However it would appear that the area was held only briefly as a map 100 years later shows that the Black Sea coastline as now being held by the Ottoman Empire. Breda 2
Jan Prygoda
开云体育The Dutch TV news also showed the Poles marching through Breda
today. In the reports the stress is constantly at the statement that the Poles
liberated the Dutch but that they could not liberate their own country because
of the Russians. They also mentioned in the main news that the Poles fighting in
the West were seen as traitors in communist Poland. This attention is very good
for the Poles here in the Netherlands.

You're very welcome for the kind words. Your Polish Generation deserves it. I thought my life is/was tough, but it pales in comparison to what you and your generation had to deal with. I had three uncles that managed to escape the frozen death grip of Siberia and fight at Monte Casino. I am saddened that when I was younger I did not take more interest in their pain. The betrayal by the allies was the last nail in the coffin. After the war one of them decided not to return to Russian invaded Poland and be potentially shipped off to Siberia gain. What a thought eh? Another returned because he found out his wife was allowed to go back to Poland in 1946. The 3'rd one , my mother's fiancé never had a choice to make. He was killed at the "monestary". I think that this war was very well thought out and planed to destroy/erase Poland off the map. Kill them in the concentration camps and in Siberia. And anyone who is left will be so psychologically damaged that they will be scared and damaged for many generations. To the point of suicides even Yes time heals everything like you say. But, it heals it very, very, extremely slowly. I feel that we should not let it heal to that point that it "numbs" our brains and we let it happen again to us. We can try to forcibly push it to the very depths of our minds. You/we must heal to get on with life, be happy, etc. but I don't believe in total "blind healing". Otherwise, what will we have learned from all that pain, and 8,000,000 Polish deaths? Zbyszek -----Original Message-----

Subject: Re: RE: [Kresy-Siberia] Re: Polish flag on Monte Cassino Hi Zbyszek Thank you for your letter and your kind words. The honor of capturing the Monastery should really go to the 1-st brigade of the 3-rd Carpathian Division. They were the first to go in assault on the Hill 593 where the fiercest battle took place, and they suffered the highest losses. I don't remember which one was it but from one company 8 came down back. Yes, this was our chance to take revenge for all that Germans did to our nation. But the worst came later, when we found out about the bertayal, that we did not have the coutry to go to, that all our sacrifices and blood was for nothing. People did not know what to do; some wanted to go to a neutral country (Turkey) and surrender our arms there. Some wanted to establish a Polish colony in some country (there were talks about Madagascar). There were many suicides...Those were terrible days. But they say that time heals everything - maybe it's true. Thanks again, Pozdrowienia Romuald |
