Re: Introducing Myself

Zbigniew Bob Styrna

Chris,

Welcome to the group and I hope you find what you are looking for. Your
mother was very wise to document her journey and was lucky enough to carry
it with out of Siberia.

The picture of Siberia would be of great value to all our members I'm sure
since pictures of WWII Siberia are pretty much NON _EXISTENT. I've never
see any myself.

Regards

Zbyszek

Subject: [Kresy-Siberia] Introducing Myself

Dear Friends,

It is my understanding that new members often
introduce themselves to the group upon joining. My
name is Chris Conway and I am a professor of Latin
American literature at the University of Texas at
Arlington.

My mother, Magdalena Hartman, was interned in a
Siberian prison camp with her parents, George Hartman
and Irena Hartman (maiden name Szrajer). My
grandfather, George, was an officer in the Polish
cavalry. Eventually, my grandparents and my mother
left the camp and travelled through Persia to India,
and from there to the U.S.

I am very fortunate to have a memoir that my mother
wrote when she was 13 years old, called "Journey to
Freedom," in which she tells the story of her journey
from Poland to New York City. I hope to self-publish
it soon (not for profit, but simply as a document of
value for the telling of this fascinating story of the
Polish people). I am also fortunate in that my family
has some photographs from my mother's time in
Siberia, as well as photos of her time in India. I
will try to gather some of the Siberian ones to share
with this group.

My mother passed away several years ago and I am not
very well informed about this chapter in Polish
history. I look forward to learning from the members
of this group.

Thank you,

Chris
