TS 140S IF-10A/B/C board installation.

Hi All, I'm seeking help on the installation of a Piexx.com interface board (IF-10A/B/C) into my old TS 140. A few months ago when I received the board I installed it as per the instructions and as it is nearly identical to the original Kenwood board it was easy to install. Problems happened when I tried to use it (initially with N1MM) and I really thought I'd blown the unit - wiped a memory chip or something. The display was scrambled and alarming beeps were heard. I shut it down and started to look at buying a new rig. I threatened it with being replaced by a new Yaesu!
Does anyone know if some set up procedure is required. There is a step in their instructions I don't understand about getting the Serial Interface to respond to command "if;" I'm out of my depth when it comes to finer points of programming. I expected N1MM to operate the interface.
