Re: 73 Linuxnot ready for mint 22?

I was having the same problem. Your fixed worked for all except FLdigi

Re: 73 Linuxnot ready for mint 22?

Thanks Larrie,
?
I'm going to install Mint 22 (Wilma) this weekend. I'll see if I need to install libfltk1.3-dev

Installer suggestion

I've had the issue a couple of times where the "interesting facts" box covers up the other installers like Vara for example so you can't see it in the background. Also every time it switches between messages it steals the focus. If we could at least make that box draggable to a corner of the screen or just have it start in one of the corners, that would be helpful. Or maybe a checkbox to disable the messages in the initial screen when you select packages?
Just a suggestion! Thanks for all you do!

Re: vara install

Hi Tom,

Not currently. But you can use the Winelink script for that (which is back up and running and now incorporates the PiApps wine installer).

Kind regards,

Re: 73 Linuxnot ready for mint 22?

Just an FYI
?
The latest version of 73-Linux just released by Jason, works fine with Mint 22.? Only issue in my case was the FL suite would not install.? From error message, it appeared the libfltk1.3-dev did not install.? Did manual sudo apt install libfltk1.3-dev (got this from the install script) which fixed the issue.? Flsuite install with no issues.

Re: Pat doesn't key IC-7100, but does everything else.

Try
Also, there is a VARA forum in groups.io. /g/VARA-MODEM/topics
?
The short answer is that VARA processes the audio, but rigctld from Hamlib handles the PTT. You didn't give your current setup so its hard to know what is happenig.? I run VARA HF under Wine with a IC-7300 and I think others are running an IC-7100. There is a youTube video somewhere that describes the Pat setup but its for Windows. But, the process is the same. If you already have Vara running on a PI you already did the hard part.

Re: 73 Linuxnot ready for mint 22?

Jason, thank you for all of your work on 73 Linux. I am new to Linux, I have been running mint 21.3, I have it installed on the old hard drive from my laptop and have been running it externally. I would not have been able to get all of the ham apps I use up and running with out 73 Linux and your YouTube tutorials. I am eagerly awaiting your update of 73 Linux so I can do a fresh install of mint 22 on the internal hard drive on my laptop. My question is , are you going to include the ardopcf enhancement you mentioned on git hub in this update. I installed it on my mint 21.3, it was the only way I can make any winlink connections. I was even able to change conky and pat menu using some of your videos as guides,so everything would would work right with ardopcf.?

anyway. Thanks again?

Re: 73 Linuxnot ready for mint 22?

Run timeshift just before upgrading the kernel and you should be able to easily go back. Grub also keeps the previous kernel in boot and root so you can go back using that method as well.??

Re: 73 Linuxnot ready for mint 22?

On some laptops you can switch the network card out to an Intel card. This should eliminate most wifi/Bluetooth issues, but some laptops bios will reject anything other than the OEM network card.? In that case you can use USB dongle.? Updating kernels can be a good thing though. Remember the driver's are in the kernel. After upgrading? 6.9.8? my Bluetooth issue connecting to JBL speakers was fixed, had to re-connect after every YouTube video.?

Re: 73 Linuxnot ready for mint 22?

Have you thought about offering an option to skip the OS update at the beginning of a 73Linux run? ?This way you could stay on a "stable OS while adding or updating apps through 73Linux. ?This could be done with one more question at the beginning of the 73Linux script asking if you want to update the OS.
The OS wouldn't update unless you ran a "mintupgrade". However, running apt upgrade would update the kernel if a new version is available. I leave it up to users to put a hold on the kernel if they feel it's needed.

I had mint 21 loaded with 73 linux on a macbook air 11inch.

I tried an upgrade of linux 22.

Long story short, reduce the number of snapshots as the upgrade takes forever.
?
Suffice to say I got mint22 going, 73 linux worked ¡°sort of¡±, and mint bombed out trying to upgrade / fix missing stuff in 73linux
?
I then just installed 22 from scratch runs well new interface looks great. 73linux installs.

hamlib, conky, and a few others have issues installing on Mint 22. Working on a fix. I have also noticed that Wi-Fi drops out on two different laptops that I have tested so far. Could be something in my network but haven't experienced it before.
?
Gerry,
Linux isn't for everyone and I still run a Mac for my day job because certain required software isn't available on Linux. I agree with you that one should seriously consider before upgrading. I seldom if ever upgrade a working system. I am more inclined to build a fresh system rather than upgrading a good one. Backups are a must for EVERY OS.

I'm also thinking it sounds like RFI. It's working but fails. Both computers are not the same, regardless of the OS. Circuitry design, RF noise, parts used? internally being different from different vendors, etc. Even the same make and model can act differently. I once had a computer randomly reboot, changed out the power supply and the motherboard. Turned out the surge protector's MOV was bad. Had another one that kept having a screen go blank, turns out the keyboard had a bad ground and was picking up static. Troubleshooting sure can be fun ?

Troubleshooting this thuroughly would require swapping the OS between devices and se if the problem stays with unit or follows the OS..?

Re: 73 Linuxnot ready for mint 22?

Jason, I suspect that there are a whole lot of operating system newbies on this list, and for someone only interested in getting something working as quickly and as reliably as possible, and keeping it that way for the long haul, I can¡¯t think of a worse OS to choose. I was a Systems Engineer for over 30 years before retiring. Indeed I was doing the job before the name was coined! I worked primarily for Apple Canada so MacOS was always my OS of choice, but because I had to work with customers who ran multiple operating systems, I had to have a good, at least practical grasp of all of them.?

Linux, with a few notable exceptions is a free and open OS. This is both its greatest strength and its greatest weakness! I started working with Debian in the early 20s. Back then, if you wanted to do many things you still had to fall back on the terminal. Even today, you can still only get some things done if you know the terminal AND the syntax.?

Even today, Linux is designed and run, for the most part, by and for geeks. Because virtually all Linux distributions now include a modern Desktop and Desktop manager, someone new to Linux might come to the conclusion that it¡¯s ¡°just like Windows¡± or ¡°just like MacOS.¡± Thus the nightmare begins!

I fear Linux is still not for the faint of heart. My best advice for a complete novice is to Install it, and once you get it working to your liking, back it up and LEAVE IT ALONE. Remember these words: You are ONE update away from disaster!

Jason, personally, I honour you for all the hard work you have put into, not only the original and continued development of 73Linus but also the ridiculously long number of hours you put into support every week. It is astonishing, and really shows why Linux was developed in the first place.

Personally, I have a fully working version running on an HP EliteBook 840 laptop. Everything works, That said, I rarely ever use it anymore. I have installed the individual apps I need on a 5 year old MacBook Pro for portable use and an even older Mac mini for my shack. It¡¯s the OS I am most familiar with, I can rely on them and most important of all I have the skill to maintain them. YMMV

Re: Building up a wo-we

73Linux does both an apt update and upgrade when the script is run. The upgrade is what will install a new kernel if it's available. You can avoid this by adding a "hold" to the kernel before running 73Linux.

Re: 73 Linuxnot ready for mint 22?

I have identified at least two issues (one critical) with 73Linux due to changes in Mint 22. Issues tickets have been opened on GitHub and I hope to release an update later this week.
?
It is always best to let the dust settle on a new OS release unless you want to be a beta tester and don't mind dealing with the issues that arise. Seldom does everything work as expected with a new release.
