Re: Will Not Boot from SSD - At My Wit's End!

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Steve,

I appreciate it. I was able to get the RPi back to a useable config using a freshly burned uSD. However, I still cannot perform a cold boot without removing and re-inserting the USB3 adapter.

At some point, before I burned another uSD, the RPi wouldn¡¯t even detect the SSD. After perusing various websites not particular to the Argon M.2, I have found this is a known issue and could be related to the latest EEPROM. One website even said to use an EEPROM from September. This also appears to be an intermittent issue but I¡¯m not sure if it¡¯s an intermittent RPi4 issue or an intermittent issue with something else.

I don¡¯t think I¡¯m doing anything wrong. I have followed all instructions, watched multiple videos and I still have the same issue - no cold boot, loss of SSD, but reboots to SSD (when it¡¯s not lost).

I wish it would have worked. I know it does work for most but I guess I just got a lemon.

I have submitted an email to Argon Customer Support but at this point, I¡¯m jaded and have to walk away from it.

Thanks,
Joel, W4JBB

Re: Problems connecting with IC-705 from RaspberryPi

I finally tried a FOURTH USB cable, and BAM!? Works perfectly.? Who knew that there are so many challenging USB cables?? I need to go back and study some more...

Thanks all for the help!!

Problems connecting with IC-705 from RaspberryPi

SCENARIO: Brand new IC-705, firmware v1.11 (out of box)

SYMPTOMS:? FLRig fails to connect; program shows "INITIALIZING" but the program hangs and requires Pi reboot

STEPS TAKEN:
  • Verified that my user name is a member of dialout, as required in this video??
  • IC-705 - went under CONNECTORS->CI-V and updated ECHO BACK to ON and CI-V TRANSCEIVE to ON
  • Turned on the serial port on the Pi under settings (although there was no guidance to do that in any instructions)
  • Tried several USB cables, different USB slots on the RPi
  • shows no devices captured by the HamPi device
  • No audio devices are showing on the RPi

Why no devices captured by the RPi?? I can connect a mouse and keyboard that work fine...
Can someone please confirm the settings from IC-705 that I should make?
Is there something I am not setting properly in the RPi?

Thanks, WD4ELG

Jason,

I ran the commands?as you said. "Pi-build" was missing. Once I completed the east?of the commands. everything was back in order.?

Thanks for sharing your work with all of us. What a tremendous gift!

Re: Pat Menu no Ardop connection

Try to start direwolf manually and see what errors it produces. Run this from terminal:
direwolf -p -t 0
Note: that is a zero at the end of the command and not the letter O

Re: Will Not Boot from SSD - At My Wit's End!

Steve,

Thank you for the links and reminder.

Yes, I have used a different case with a different USB3 external SSD using the same RPi4.

I had forgotten about ETA Prime's video and will go back and revisit it.

Re: Will Not Boot from SSD - At My Wit's End!

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have had no problem with SSD.? I use a SSD to USB3 cable.? May be a good place to step back to (take the Argon case out of the equation).? Are you sure you have updated the eeprom ??
vcgencmd bootloader_version
vcgencmd bootloader_config

"ETA Prime" has good video.? I first saw how to do it.

I have been using this set of commands:

------------------------------

sudo apt update????
sudo apt full-upgrade
sudo rpi-update
sudo reboot
sudo apt install rpi-eeprom
sudo nano /etc/default/rpi-eeprom-update

replace ¡°critical¡± with ¡°stable¡±?? {was ¡°beta¡± per old youtube}? Could be ¡°default¡± too
<ctrl> x , y, and Enter

sudo rpi-eeprom-update -d -f /lib/firmware/raspberrypi/bootloader/stable/pieeprom-2021-02-16.bin
(WAS) sudo rpi-eeprom-update -d -f /lib/firmware/raspberrypi/bootloader/beta/pieeprom-2020-05-15.bin and pieeprom-2020-06-15.bin
sudo reboot

vcgencmd bootloader_version
vcgencmd bootloader_config

I have followed the advice in Jason's YT video about booting from SSD to a tee.

When that didn't work, I followed the advice at Tom's Hardware to boot from SSD to a tee.

I got the RPi4 to boot *once* from SSD and now I am constantly getting... I'll just attach a photo.

Not that I needed one, but I bought the Argon40 m.2 enclosure. I bought the 128 GB version of the SSD recommended in Jason's video. I'm using the RPi4/8GB and have the default Raspberry OS w/ GUI. Everything works fine on the uSD but no matter what I do, I cannot make the this thing boot from the SSD.

I do have an Argon40 NEO case and external drive that works just fine using the *exact* same RPi4/8GB.

I'm not willing to put too much more time into this. At some point, I want the freaking thing to work.

BAP 3.0.6 to 3.0.7 Update Error #bap

I was updating a Pi 3B+ from BAP 3.0.6 to 3.0.7 and I encountered an error. I believe the BAP update did not load correctly. Has anyone run into this??

I rebooted the Pi and selected "Build-a-Pi" and noted the thumbnail for BAP was no longer there (see the attached jpg). The thumbnail for "Conky-Prefs" is not there either. When clicking on "Build-a-Pi" i get an error message (see the attached jpg).

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks,
Fred/N7PN

Re: Pat Menu no Ardop connection

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

My version of Pat Menu must be older. ?Possibly going back to when it was first released via an install video. ?I just haven¡¯t used it until now. ?It is the version with the nice GUI. ?I have to goto the command line to set ARDOP PTT to true. ?Also in direwolf it is already uncommented. My problem with direwolf is that it won¡¯t start. ?

In Pat Menu click on Manage Pat Winlink and then Set ARDOP PTT. Set this to true and try the ARDOP connection again.

You can re install direwolf using the BAP update tool found in the main pi menu. After install, you will have a similar issue with PTT. To fix, open the direwolf.conf file in your home directory. Line 185 & 186 will look like this:
#Uncomment line below for PTT with sabrent sound card
#PTT RIG 2 localhost:4532

Uncomment the second line like so
#Uncomment line below for PTT with sabrent sound card
PTT RIG 2 localhost:4532

Re: Conky and Pi 4 2gb

Juddie,

Perhaps also try "dock", "panel", or "normal" instead of "desktop".? Per that particular article, "dock" was suggested.

I just tried this on my Raspberry Pi 4 2 GB and it didn't help.? I rebooted after making the change and when it booted back up it was still the same.? I went back to the .conkyrc file to check and see if the own_window_type = 'desktop' was there and it still was.? So I don't think it is working for me.??

I will try a shut down, then start the Pi again to see if it works, maybe the reboot didn't clear out everything.

I feel confident that your boot images are fine.? I'm guessing there is some hardware quirkiness involved here and I would probably contact the manufacturer's of the case and describe this behavior to them.

Don seems to be onto something with regards to the USB3 "replug".? I hope he will tell us more.

Cold boots do not work unless I unplug and replug the USB3 jumper from the RPi to the SSD.

I will take a look at CrossTalk Solutions video later this morning. I'm actually looking forward to my dentist appointment now. :D

Re: Pi stopped transmitting with latest BAP - Signalink

Hi Dave,

I'm wondering if I was just hearing other traffic on the frequency and I might not, in fact, be heard. I opened up Direwolf and can clearly monitor packet traffic on multiple frequencies. But my Winlink transmission might be heard and thus replied to. I've rechecked everything--used last known good settings and also started from scratch. Oh well, more work to do.

This is the Silicon Power A55 and Argon One case?? I'm guessing as I'm not sure which video is the "YT Video".

If so, you might want to take a look at this:?

The author was having trouble with intermittent M.2 connectivity.?

But, let me get some clarification.? You mention you only got the setup to boot _ONE_ time, presumably from a cold start.? But you mention reboots (warm) work.? So, you cold started one time, then rebooted multiple times successfully?? Then, apparently tried another cold start and it hasn't worked since?
