For your info I loaded the latest Mint using Cinnamon on my Toughbook. I use it with Pat Winlink and my IC 705

Best thing I¡¯ve found to improve pi performance is switch to a solid state drive and off a sd card. That said, make sure you are using a high quality, high speed sd and that should help as well. Paging/swapping is hard on sd cards.

Apt update updates info from the repositories, i think 73 Linux uses that to get current source code, libraries, etc.? apt upgrade would risk installing kernels. I think the chance of the 73Linux script installing kernels is low. Unless one of the apts requires a newer kernel or library as a dependency.?

The point about subtle differences between two identical laptops is interesting. There could be very slight differences and the RFI could be right at the threshold of what the components can take - one handles it, the other has just the slightest difference that makes it just unable to handle the same level of RFI. For example, say there were something referred to as RFI Units, and your station had 100 RFI Units present at the laptop position. One laptop might handle 100 or even 101 RFI Units, and the other can only handle 99 RFI Units due to slight variations in components in each laptop. There are analog parts in the laptop (for example power circuits), and some variance in digital components is common (IC mfg bin parts based on post-production tests do things like speed ratings, and parts are tested aggressively for use in critical circuits like those on space crafts).

I'm also thinking it sounds like RFI. It's working but fails. Both computers are not the same, regardless of the OS. Circuitry design, RF noise, parts used? internally being different from different vendors, etc. Even the same make and model can act differently. I once had a computer randomly reboot, changed out the power supply and the motherboard. Turned out the surge protector's MOV was bad. Had another one that kept having a screen go blank, turns out the keyboard had a bad ground and was picking up static. Troubleshooting sure can be fun ?

Re: Evolve III laptop, 73Linux, Packet Winlink not keying IC-705 - FIXED

One thing you might want to consider if restarting from scratch is to install using the 73-Linux tools but only installing a few items at a time. You have already identified that certain apps need to be installed in order for them to work properly. I think the scripts account for that, but you can force it by only installing the earlier apps, running and configuring them, then installing the next, rinse and repeat. Verify flrig is working with full control of the radio, probably with fldigi, before installing direwolf by running 73-Linux again, edit direwolf.config before running it the first time, then install wsjt-x, etc., rebooting the machine after each install. There obviously are interactions between these packages. I don't fully understand all those interactions, but I have noted that making sure each package is working before moving to the next seems to help get the interdependencies resolved correctly.
It's somewhat painful to add the next level of protection, but it might be worth it - get a full backup of the system between each install after ensuring the last package is working correctly. If the next one fails, you have saved the work up to that point and may not have to go back through all those steps again.

Re: Building up a wo-we

Your plan B was what I was attempting.? Problem seems to be that 73-Linux does an apt update at the start of the script.? ?At least that is what I am seeing, I have not attempted to open up the script.? That makes some sense in the normal course of events.? You likely should do an update if you are going to do a major install.? At least that is how most linux docs say you should work.??

Guess I'll wait and see if KM4ACK gets back to me on another way of doing this.

Sounds interesting, I also think, it is RFI.
Both computers stand at the same Place, about 49cm right of the xiegu and all devices (pc and xiegu) run on internal battery

?Interesting question, this sounds like RFI (obviously), and the only stated differences are the physical computers (two different computers of same model/design) and the OS (Linux or win)...

I suspect the issue has to do with the location of each computer in relation to feedline/transmitter... that's about the best I can do based on the supplied info.

Your random wire antenna w/ 9:1 balun is using the coax as part of the antenna system, so you have your computer right next to the actual antenna. A difference of inches between your transmitter/coax and computer could make the difference.

Have you considered adding a choke balun (1:1) away from the radio to keep RF away from the computers?

I'm interested to see what we learn from this...

Re: Building up a wo-we

If the problem is screen goes away after login, i had something similar with an ATOPC-NUC (WoWe clone?). It is a linux kernel problem and nothing to do with 73Linux or how it updates apps. In my case, it was a regular linux mint kernel upgrade. Probably affects other Debian based distros
?
I know its been discussed on linux mint forums and a solution to load a working kernel as the default in cases of a headless system. I am away from that pc so i cannot check details, but the mint forums are where i would start.?
?
PlanB:? if a stock mint install works, run that and install 73 Linux on top. Just do not upgrade the kernel from the main OS maint app and you should be ok. Good luck.?

So the script does the update when it runs?? Then that is what is causing the problem with mint 21 on WO-WE.? Is there a way I can change the script so that it does not do the update, or are you depending on that update for the script to work?
?
If I could find a reliable way to force the system to boot from the older version, which does work, I could avoid the whole problem, but so far none of the suggestions I found on the we seem to work.

73Linux doesn't do any updates at boot. This only happens when you run the 73Linux script.
