Re: Linux73 install over BAP + manual VARA = AX.25 and Direwolf issues #73linux #direwolf #IC-705

I am going to guess the same issue here is a problem?

if you set the line in direwolf config to?

PTT RIG 4 localhost:12345

launch flrig
launch direwolf

is this fixing the problem?

-k

Re: cmake problem solved - new problem with HAMLIB

I am just making assumptions based on common issues, the dire wolf config example is no help IMO

if you set the line in dire wolf to?

PTT RIG 4 localhost:12345

launch flrig
launch direwolf

should work fine, there is a copy of hamlib built into the dire wolf, copy your running. so calling for PTT RIG 2 is saying use external hamlib/rigctld via network. if you want to do it this way you want to run rigctld which houses the network stack of which you can use PTT RIG 2 in direwolf

hope that helps - k

Linux73 install over BAP + manual VARA = AX.25 and Direwolf issues #73linux #direwolf #IC-705

I was having trouble getting my new ICOM IC¨C705 working with my Raspberry Pi 4 - 8 GB running BAP, so Jason suggested that I install Linux73 on top of my existing BAP installation. I did that, and Kelly suggested that follow this with a manual install of the VARA Winlink components, which I did.

Jason:?/g/KM4ACK-Pi/topic/104659521

Kelly:?/g/KM4ACK-Pi/topic/102983790

All of the programs seemed to install correctly without any obvious errors and I went through and configured each program per the two videos that Jason has on setting up the IC ¨C 705.

ICOM 705 Build a Pi Setup

Getting Started with KM4ACK Build a Pi

However, I continue to get errors when using Pat Winlink. Even though rig control through flrig is working with other programs, within the pat mailbox window in Chromium I get errors saying:?

¡°QSY failed: unable to get rig frequency dial tcp 127.0.0.1:4532: connect: connection refused¡±

Unable to establish connection to remote: no AX.25 ports configured

And when I run?direwolf -p?from a terminal window I get more errors which seem to indicate a problem with rig control:

¡°rig_open?/home/rob/.config//home/rob/hamlibSettings does not exist¡±

Running direwolf -p from terminal

For reference, here are my serial and capture devices in terminal:

Serial devices ¡ª CAPTURE Hardware Devices

And here is the contents of my /etc/ax25/axports file:

/etc/ax25/axports file contents

Finally, for reference, the IC-705 does not show up as a Capture or Playback device in fldigi:

Fldigi does not show IC-705 Capture or Playback Devices

I feel a bit like the old expression, ¡°close, but no cigar¡±. Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong here

Thanks in advance,

What is your rig control are you wanting to use flrig?

it appears your trying to connect via network to something which isn¡¯t answering. Flrig is now port 12345 fyi?

hamlib is built into direwolf, appears your working there. There is an error from likely a bad config string somewhere casing file not found -config//home- the double // is no good.?

Re: Low audio output from WSJT-X into G90 through DigiRig

I figured out the issue, and wanted to put it in here for other people who might run into this.

It turns out that there is a known issue with the G90 that it stop transmitting every now and then, and you have to give it a whack by the antenna connector (like, physically mack it), and it will start working again.

I reluctantly tried it, and it started working for about an hour. another whack got it working for another hour.

I am gonna put it on the bench this weekend and see if I can suss out what is going on. I think It's been too long for this to be covered by warranty, but I'll check.

Thanks for all your suggestions, everyone!

On the one I use for ham radio (the 16 GB version), I am using the included 256 GB SSD. If I have one complaint, that computer is marketed as having 512 GB storage. It does... Technically but it's not how I have ever thought of storage - it's two 256 GB storage devices - the 256 GB eMMC where the OS comes pre-installed and a 256 GB SSD that is empty - not a single 512 GB SSD. It's probably in the fine print but I didn't read it that way.

I don't know that I could recommend it for an FTx contest but it seems to hold its own. I do recommend a heatsink to put on top of the PC though - it can run hot. Otherwise, it's not a bad little computer.

They come preloaded with Win11Pro but it doesn't keep you from installing your preferred Linux distro. I use RDP from my Mac to control both of them. The one I use for AP is actually setup for an ad hoc network but that ad hoc network only works after you've logged into it so, if you lose power and have no way to connect, you're SOL. It's never been an issue with me - I run a temp CAT6 cable out to the scope - so I've not really needed to troubleshoot it and I have other priorities.

Thanks, Phil..

When I first ran across this problem, I didn¡¯t have the latest firmware. I was running a very old version that didn¡¯t even have the digital modes. In the process of addressing the problem, I updated the firmware to the latest versions. I am keeping the radio at U-D, but curiously, FLRig doesn¡¯t show the new modes as options.

Let me try running WSJT-X without FLRig running, and see if that changes anything.

Thanks!

In the older firmware builds, one swapped between mic input and line input; in the latest, USB is microphone and U-D is line input (and similarly for LSB).

I've had that one myself more than once, trying to figure out why I'm not getting any output, and then realising that I'm in the wrong mode.

Hope this helps.

Re: VARA in Dec2023 on a Pi

for sure Rob,?

one tip on the command line is TAB will finish a lot of stuff quickly so simply running wine 'VAR <TAB> will finish it off if there is only on V you can omit the quote altogether!?

The note about running as admin applies to a real windows kernel only you are the admin of wine no need to use sudo at all preference is not for most items but sometimes its a sneaky trick to run a .exe elevated (sudo wine app.exe) it might help you find a problem you didnt know was just permissions?

all that said simply running wine and the binary (exe) is enough to get most things done.?

MSI files can be ran with a command like

?wine msiexec /i whatever-filename.msi?

as for which winlink apps to run only focus on?
Winlink_Express_install that is the winlink client - the rest of the apps are advanced users, the download link I suggested just pulls the files recursively for the site to make it easy for most.

hope that helps!

OH! i should have mentioned this.. but yes..?

I usually ride it around 75% to get a signal with full power and about 98% ALC..

The weird thing is that this is running maybe a watt, and no matter where you put the slider, it¡¯s at 100% ALC.. BUT.. the signal will got to zero as you pull it down..

thanks for checking in!

The title may be misleading, but this is where I am with this right now.

?

It all started when I decided to set up HF packet via DireWolf last week. Everything was working fine, but I started having trouble staying connected to remote stations.

?

As part of an article on setting up a BBS on HF Packet, one of the suggestions I read was to delete the PulseAudio system completely. I did so. Immediately after, I had very low audio output from WSJT-X into the rig. I had the power set to 10W, but I was only hitting the radio with enough audio to transmit one watt. The ALC was at 100% no matter what I tried. Using alsamixer, I could get the output down to zero by moving the slider to 0 or muting the speaker.

?

I reinstalled PulseAdudio, but still had the same issues.

?

This installation was initially a Build-A-Pi installation, but I decided I would start from scratch, but rather than use build-a-pi, I would do a minimal install. I would install only FLRig and WSJT-X. I also thought my cheap USB soundcard might be the culprit, so I ordered a DigiRig.

?

I also read that there was an issue with the G90 itself, and the updated firmware has new modes available (U-D mode, USB digital). So, I updated the firmware on the G90 to the latest on the front and back ends.

?

So now, I have the following:

A minimal installation of the OS
WSJT-X installled. It is receiving and decoding perfectly, but will only transmit a low audio level signal.
Digirig replacing the old USB soundcard
FLRig installed. It controls the radio just fine.

?

And I have the same issue I started with.

?

Is there something I missed??

Re: VARA in Dec2023 on a Pi

Rob, you can open your downloads folder and unzip what you want for example you could

unzip 'VARA HF v4.8.6 setup.zip'
which would give you a setup.exe file for VARA HF in the same directory (you can also right click with the GUI menu and say extract)

you launch the Setup.exe file by double-clicking on it (if you have your launcher setup for this) or from a cli simply run?
wine XXXXNAME OF PROGRAM LIKE SETUP VARA HF.exe

which should launch the installer and you should notice a windows installer launch (do the same for FM and winlink)

I just tested launching everything including varac (which can be a pain) and had them launch today in a new pi5 install, pi4 shouldn't be far behind. I personally prefer wine32 and a wine32 environment for all this to keep it easy but now a days its all wow64 wine64 and .. it did just work for me I am chatting between radios on varAC right now. Winlink seems fine.?

hope this helps?
