GPS PPS on another GPIO pin?

Douglas Pervine

I'm using the BAP build to run a BPQ Node/Winlink Gateway.? I'm using it with an Audio Injector Zero (AIZ) sound card. It uses various pins to operate. One pin in particular is GPIO 18.

To setup GPS with PPS. The examples on the Internet say to also use GPIO 18 for the PPS. This is a conflict with the AIZ.

Can I use another GPIO pin to sync PPS?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.?

Doug

Re: PAT/winlink on Pi 4B to IC-9700 via USB cable #flrig #direwolf #pat

Edited

Thanks Jason

Intended use:? interoperate with local emcomm using wl2k email on 2-meters at 1200 baud. Most people use windows machines; not me, so I'm trying Pi+PAT+direwolf.

In FLRIG, I just changed the port from /dev/ttyUSB0 to [long string containing] ...IC-9700_1200409_A-if00-port0.

No change in flrig behavior. As before, flrig reads the dial frequency, can change it, GUI PTT button works, etc.

But now, running direwolf -p bombs with the following messages:
Dire Wolf version 1.6
Includes optional support for:? hamlib cm108-ptt
Reading config file direwolf.conf
Audio device for both receive and transmit: plughw:3,0? (channel 0)
Could not open audio device plughw:3,0 for input
Device or resource busy
Pointless to continue without audio device.
pi@rpi:~ $

I was seeing this behavior yesterday. I don't know what had direwolf momentarily receiving audio earlier today, but it's not doing so any more.

All suggestions gratefully received,
Bob? AK6KA

Re: PAT/winlink on Pi 4B to IC-9700 via USB cable #flrig #direwolf #pat

First things first. Let's see if we can get FLRIG working by itself. Select the Bridge Controller "A-IF-00" Leave everything else at default in FLRIG. Now see if you can change the frequency with FLRIG. Next try using the PTT button in FLRIG and verify that FLRIG will key the radio. Once that's working, we can move on to direwolf.

I don't own the 9700 so "A-IF-00" is an educated guess. If that one doesn't work, try the "B-IF-00" instead.

The intermittent transmit of the radio is more than likely coming from direwolf when it beacons. What would you like to accomplish with direwolf? APRS digipeater or Packet Winlink?

PAT/winlink on Pi 4B to IC-9700 via USB cable #flrig #direwolf #pat

Hi Everyone. I'm a newbie here ... just got a Pi 4B set up and many of the BAP offerings installed (hamlib, hotspot/HStools, direwolf, AX25, pulse, flrig, PAT, PATmenu, packetsearch, etc.)? This happened yesterday so versions ought to be current. I'm very grateful for BAP and for Jason's many videos.

The Icom IC-9700 (fw v1.31) provides audio in both directions and CAT rig control all on the same USB cable, which is now connected to the Pi. (I'm looking for the simplest possible setup -- no CI-V cable, no external soundcard, etc.) It's tantalizingly close -- with manual configuration, flrig is partly working, I've set the xcvr frequency manually (local 2m node), and now direwolf is able to receive & decode beacons. That's without even setting audio levels! When and how does that take place?

The problem (possibly one of many) seems to be with flrig. It appears able to control the rig with any of three /dev/ devices selected. In messing around with flrig, sometimes it puts the radio into transmit (now sporting a dummy load when messing around) for no reason I can discern. Also, the rig/device/baud settings are not retained and need to be re-selected with each launch.

All suggestions welcome, as well as explanations or pointers to educate the newbie. TIA & 73

Bob AK6KA

Glad you got some resolution. Hate that it was a hardware issue instead of software.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this, the day job got in the way.
Good news is that I believe that I figured it out by barrowing my daughters windows laptop and installing the drivers for the radio.

Bad news is that the radio needs to go back to Icom to have the USB port fixed.
The Windows laptop did not see the radio either.

Semi good news is that it is still under warranty.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: Possible piardopc Performance Issue #ardop #bullseye

Can't speak to the performance of piardopc (I haven't tested lately) but there was an issue after a new Linux kernel release that caused it to lock TX in Bullseye - /g/bpq32/topic/90161705#35415

Possible piardopc Performance Issue #ardop #bullseye

The current version (1.0.4.1mBPQ-Debug5) of piardopc may have a performance issue.? After building an Rpi 4b Bullseye 64bit (9/6/22), installing BAP v2.10.0 along with PAT (v0.13.1).? I configured VARA-HF and piardopc and got them operational. I noticed that for a given set of band conditions VARA-HF would run a session to completion fairly efficiently.? When I tried ardop there many retries with a session often ending in failure.? Both protocols were using the same RMS and frequency.? After much testing on different days I felt ardop was not performing as in the past.? Jason KM4ACK had cautioned that Bullseye 64bit may not be ready for prime time so I built a 32bit version and found ardop was not performing as expected.? I booted up a 32bit version from last spring that is running ardop (v1.0.4.1j-BPQ).? It connected to the RMS server with minimal retries.? I switched back to the Debug5 version and excessive retries and connection lost. Back to the Buster version with (v1.0.4.1j-BPQ) minimal retries and a successful session.? I tried the piardopc(v1.0.4.1j-BPQ) on the Bullseye 32bit and it locked on the 1st transmit.? Anybody else seeing similar issues?

Re: Different display or graphic drivers for Bullseye

Edited

Okay, I figured out for my issue. My Isotect portable monitor has two hdmi ports, but I've always used the same one with my Buster builds.? Thinking it was the hdmi cables, I tried all kinds.? I decided to try the other port and it worked. I dont have any paperwork anymore so not sure why the other hdmi port works

Re: Update tool question

Thank you that worked perfectly! Now if I could only figure out how to mount my NAS to BAP I'd be in great shape!

well I see some indication when searching the net that others have it running on 64bit linux but maybe the arm 64bit implementation does not work.I may need to go with a 32bit install.

Re: Logging software alternatives

Thanks Steve for your kind words.

Michael Bridak, the author of FDlogger?is a great guy, easy to work with and very responsive to emails. In my case, when I first tried FDlogger?for Field Day, I had a couple of issues that was a result of my specific go-frame setup, which is a Yaesu FT-857D and an LDG autotuner, which uses CAT control from the rig.

When I would go to run the autotuner while FDlogger?was running, it would crash the program and I had to reboot?the Pi to get things going again. Also at the end of Field Day the place in the .db file where I used the autotuner the Cabrillo file wouldn't export, so I had to manually retype my log into my N3FJP Field Day program for submission.

Michael was EXTREMELY responsive to my emails and stuck with me on this issue until all was resolved. My point in sharing this is to show that Michael? provides EXCELLENT support for his software.

As you say, FDlogger?is Field Day specific. However, in his defense, so is the N3FJP software. By that I mean that N3FJP has a separate?program for each contest he supports as well as a general logging program (AClog) that can be modified for specific needs such as POTA.

I agree with you if Michael would make a generic version that could be customized for such things as POTA (which I do a fair amount of as well...).that would be a great contribution to the world of ham radio. At this time I use Xlog for POTA on my BAP simply because it allows the user to add 2 extra fields to the database?which POTA needs. That being SIG_INFO and MY_SIG_INFO.?

Xlog isn't the best solution here, as there seems to be conflicting versions of hamlib between BAP and Xlog.?

If Michael made a copy of his FDlogger?with two user customizable fields and made it a more generic logging program (like N3FJP's AClog program..)? that leaves it pretty wide open for several different ham activities / contests. SOTA comes to mind here.?

You might want to reach out to him and see what he says. His email is good on QRZ - K6GTE.

For me at this time, I am starting to look forward to Winter Field Day, of which Michael has a seperate custom program for that contest as well. I haven't had a chance to install and test it yet, but I did reach out to Michael to see if he has updated his WFD program with the changes he made to FDlogger, and he has made those changes, so it too should work fine.

When I get a chance to test his WFDlogger on my BAP I will be writing another blog post about his WFDlogger program as well.

I hope I am making sense here. Anyway 73's

Geeze! What is he up to now?

Thanks Mike, you have a great site by the way!? Appreciate the step-by step on how you installed and use Field Day Logger (you should submit some of that info as a patch to the manual/install & config instructions).? ?The interface is very intuitive, and it's fast.? Looks like a very useful program, easier to use than tfl or trlinux I found.? Albeit very focused on just FD (which may be why it works so well).? I see he's since written programs for POTA spotting and POTA logging.

I was hoping it could be adapted for other contests - the arrl_sect data could be (maybe?) replaced with counties for a state QSO party, but changing the exchange from FD entry class to a serial number would take new code and more involved mods to the interface.? Since he's written other single-purpose loggers, maybe...?
