Mine was a power issue. I had to switch to pi hat that allowed me to run everything from 12v, Power is much better and? the GPS seems to work much better

Typically guys will use either a sound card with VOX for PTT or PTT via CAT control which is fed through a USB port. You could also use the GPIO pins for PTT but this isn't something I have done.
