If you want to do it so that you have one Wi-Fi interface on the RPi to be your access point and another for updates (to your phone, etc.) you could use an external USB adapter and when the RPi scans and sees the SSID of yoru phone or even your home Wi-Fi, it will connect and you can do your updates.
