Re: not sure what to do about RAM

Hi, David,

Thanks for hints, they are exactly?what I needed.

Still I don't understand why the 1000 modules are so forgotten, they are outstanding musical instruments.?

There it goes a pic of my units ?

Hi Jose Juan,
Your Pro 1 and 2 are both populated with all the available sound chips, so there's no possibility (or even need) to add anything else. You'll have ROM sounds in both modules, but the RAM locations are there for you to add further sounds in the 1000 library. If you look on , you'll find a large number of RAM libraries available. If you start to audition them, you'll find that there are some wonderful sounds programmed up by the folks at Kurzweil, together with other banks from third parties. I posted my collection of sounds there as well. By working your way through the relevant libraries (remember that for the Pro 2 you might want to investigate both the SX and HX banks) you can assemble your own library of 'greatest hits' that you prefer. One thing to be aware of: The RAM library size isn't colossal. Even though there's a potential 256 locations with v.5 software, you'll probably find that you run out of RAM memory around 224 or so. That's been my experience at least. Hope this is useful info for you. David.

Re: not sure what to do about RAM

Hi Nicole,
Just as a point of clarification, there were no third party chips produced for the 1000 series. Sweetwater DID produce ROM chips for the K250, and I belive that on a K250 the sounds lurk in the 700 and 800 bank locations.
Hope this helps,
David.

Re: not sure what to do about RAM

With one exception, I haven't heard about any additional sounds to a Pro 1 or 2. Back in the Day Sweetwater did some alternate sound chips, from what I was told, though I've never encountered anything with them inside.

There might be more about this on the k1000.net website.

Subject: [K1000-K1200] not sure what to do about RAM

Hello,

Actually I have two modules, upgraded to pro1, and pro2. Just finished the restorations and they are now ready to sound at my studio.

I have to recognize that I did not dig completely on the load of info in the k1000.net, so my apologies if I am asking for something that is already explained.

If I understood correctly, there is a possibility of adding some extra sounds to the modules, by using the RAM locations. What I don?t have clear is that is that makes sense, to get extra timbres for the modules, or if I go this way, what I will get will be duplicates of sounds that are already on ROM.

Thanks in advance,
Jos¨¦ Juan

Re: New member, old member; Upgraded my units; Questions

IIRC, that conversion project to an 8 button Pro3 was David Brown's project. I don't know what happened to any additional documentation for it, and he said it was a difficult swap. I'd probably use the eight button front panel section for something that can handle it easier.

I have no idea what happened to my AX+ I sent him. (his passing was a great loss to our community -- he was the one that got Kurzweil to let us share the binaries for upgrades as long as no profit was involved) It would make a useful parts carcass for many of your needs, though it had Numark rack ears on it, not the factory ones. What in the world happened to all the rack ears? I know the modules shipped with them, so are they sitting intermingled with the pile of missing left socks?

Yes, the knobs tend to fall off. I had that happen to my AX+ too, so I replaced it with a screw type hat style knob in black. I wish I had a Spinal Tap style knob to put on it, because that would of course be cooler, but those hat style guitar control knobs don't look too out of place on a 1000 series module. (yes, I could see back then)

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Nicole

Subject: [K1000-K1200] New member, old member; Upgraded my units; Questions

Hi everyone! I just joined this group, but I was a member of the old K1000,net group. This Xmas, I pulled out my 4 1000 modules, and completely refurbished them I now have upgraded the displays to LED, and have upgraded three to Pro 1, Pro 2, and Pro 3. Very easy upgrade, In fact, 2 of my 1000HX units were fully socketed, so I pulled the 23 button face from my 1000AX+, and upgraded the HX to a Pro 3.

Now for the difficult part. I've successfully upgraded the 1000AX+ to a Pro 2 unit, and transplanted an 8 button faceplate onto it. But, I am urgently looking for the following parts, which were damaged on the original AX+ unit.

--Power button (switch replacement was easy to find, but the nice matching button is gone....)
--2 black push buttons for the front panel. These have the escutcheon surrounding the center square. I'll take a full button panel, if someone has one. Otherwise, I'll need to go through the painful process of splicing in some square cap
tact switches, and maybe use Legos for the button caps. (They almost fit...) --Volume knob. Is it my imagination, or do these things fall off pretty easily?
--Rack ears. I know, everyone is looking for these.

If someone has a dead unit, I will gladly make an offer.

Also, can anyone confirm this:

The OS chips are paired into Hi and Lo bytes, so U21 and U32 form what is labelled the PRO PGM (or the PX+ PROG PRO), and U22 and U33 are paired into the SETUP for each unit, which I suspect contain the name list of the patches, and the patch ROM addresses. Anyone know anything about this?

Also, this:

PRO 3 8 button upgrade

Instructions on K1000.net reference some difficult hardware modifications to get the 8 button Pro 3 to work. But, the description or file describing the process does not seem to exist. Anyone successfully upgrade an 8 button unit to Pro3, and what are those hardware modifications to get it to work?

Thanks.

K1000SE Aftertouch

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi everyone,

In march I posted about a K1000SE that wouldn't boot. I managed to fix it - details below for anyone who's interested - but now I've discovered that the aftertouch isn't working. I've scoured all the schematics (from?) and I don't see anything?related to aftertouch. (Maybe I missed something.) Can anyone help? If there's an upgraded schematic anywhere, I'd love to see it.

(Regarding the boot problem.... An electrolytic capacitor close to the SRAM chips had leaked and corroded a very faint track from the OR chip feeding the write-enable SRAM input pins. I wired around this and everything is back to normal. (In the process of troubleshooting I also replaced all electrolytics across all boards, resoldered the P1 connector and installed a new SRAM chip.)

Best regards,
Michael

Re: K1000 GX - how to replace the fuse?

?The fuse is inside the panel with the fuse icon engraved on it. Not necessary to pull the entire IEC unit out. Get a Small screwdriver to snap/slide open the cover, carefully.

Thanks. It turns out the fuse was OK (I put it in another K1000 to check). So I will try your suggestion. Much obliged!

Re: K1000 GX - how to replace the fuse?

PS: I managed to replace the fuse once I figured out that just the tiny fusebox cover can be pulled off, rather than the entire AC block.

Re: K1000 GX - how to replace the fuse?

It may not be your fuse.

There's a thing called the K1000 2-step. Every time you open up one of these units, resolder the P1 connector on the power supply board and find the output stage relay and give it a nice tap. These two issues have been responsible for a lot of the troubles these units have. The P1 connector problem is an actual design flaw -- the power supply board doesn't radiate heat in the right way, so it softens the solder on the P1 connector and creates bad connections. Some folks have removed that connector completely and hard-soldered the connection, but I haven't heard any reports about if that works long-term. If you want pictures and instructions both of these procedures are on the K1000.net site. I remember doing anything with the fuse was a bear, and I don't remember anyone having to replace it, though I did have an AX+ that had the power module fail and it went for parts.

I've got two GX units that need the P1 repair done. The rest of my modules don't seem to have that problem, though it's been a while since I've been able to set my studio all the way up. But when I get things set up I'm going to pay someone to come in and resolder every single one of those connectors. (I've got four each of the Pro 1, Pro 2, and GX modules, though one GX needs an upgrade, plus a K1000 MKII Extended that's upgraded all the way)
Hope this helps,
Nicole

Subject: [K1000-K1200] K1000 GX - how to replace the fuse?

New member here - I've one simple question to ask:
I have a Kurzweil 1000 GX which unfortunately won¡¯t turn on any more, so I¡¯d like to try replacing the fuse.
I¡¯ve been able to pull out the entire AC socket compartment (which has an image of a fuse on it) as instructed in the manual, but once the whole thing is out, there seems no way to get inside it to access the actual fuse. I can¡¯t pull it out any further and am assuming the fuse is inside the part I¡¯ve pulled out, even though it looks like a solid block. I¡¯ve been searching everywhere for advice but have found nothing.
Thanks for any tips!!

K1000SE not booting

Hi everyone,

I just bought a K1000SE that won't boot. (It also has a sticker that says "Extended ROM").

I've opened it up and I have the multi-meter and soldering iron ready.

The program and setup ROM tests come up 'ok.'
The RAM test gives error 07, plus some other stuff.
The Battery test gives error 11. (I Presume it needs a new backup battery.)

Just after some guidance that might accelerate my troubleshooting?

I'm about to re-seat all the IC's and connectors, check for bad solder joints and test power supply voltages.

Thanks,
Michael

Re: K1000 net website up for grabs

I've been using Dreamhost for about eighteen years now, IIRC, and it's a great hosting provider. I've also moved some things to or from there, and it's been painless and smooth, so that's wonderful too.

Hello all,

I am willing to take on the K1000 site, unless others in the group would like to take it over and have plans for updating it etc. I currently host several sites at Dreamhost but I don't mind operating off Bluehost for a while. Unlike my big Yahoo project that's somewhat longer-term with being a full-time college student and delays from disruptions in communication with my developer who wrote scripts for that project, this would seem much more straightforward and wouldn't be subject to those issues.

Let me know.

Thanks,

Hello group,
It has been almost 30 years since I started the K1000.net website. I am no longer able to keep it updated and/or active so it is time for someone else to take over.

A couple of options.
1. The website is hosted at blue host. And the domain name and hosting is paid for a couple more years. I would suppose it would be possible to transfer the domain and account ownership to a new person, but I have not verified that process.

2. The entire code and file system can be sent to someone and they can upload to the ISP of their choice.

The site is almost entirely simple HTML and will run on almost any ISP at a low cost.

Any takers?
