Build Project
This is a follow-up to my email on soldering. With our build project coming up I thought some bench basics might be useful. These videos cover electrostatic discharge or “How to kill your transceiver without really trying”. ESD (electrostatic discharge) can take the newest most expensive gear off the ‘air in a flash…’ Chicken fried radio components are no fun indeed. Especially when you do it to your brand new radio you just opened up to install that brand new cw filter or similar add on accessory. Anyway here are some introductory tips before you open up your radio. Not directly featuring ham radio the elements are the same. https://youtu.be/RbDwcGL3yAk?feature=shared https://youtu.be/v3EWg7F9JvY?feature=shared de KA0SOG Dave Hinkley

Soldering Tips 2
Our March meeting is our first build project in a while. I thought not everyone may have much soldering experience. So I found this very basic tutorial. Building techniques and skills aren’t part of the licensing process. A few of you may not have much experience in this area so I hope this might be useful. https://youtu.be/E-O2TGoArrY?feature=shared de KA0SOG Dave Hinkley

RF indifferent speakers
When I transmitted on HF I was getting into my XYL's [KA0VTB] speakers attached to her computer. I looked around and decided to purchase for her a pair of speakers. I settled on BOSE Bose Companion 2 Series III Multimedia Speakers - for PC (with 3.5mm AUX & PC Input) Black On Amazon: https://tinyurl.com/yck6su99 I have since bought a second pair for my computer in the Shack. I have never experienced RF getting into these speakers. They are a little on the expensive side but well worth it. Robin Cross w0fen ret CE KCUR, WNIU / WNIJ

Problems with contests
Art You spoke to the Raytown ARC the other night. I thought I would contact you about a problem as I see it. When there is a contest the participants take over the bands. Those participants are the worst about courtesy. They don't care about anybody or anything else besides their score in the contest. This has been allowed to happen with no consequence. There must be a consequence for their rudeness. A typical event is a contestant will find a clear frequency [they think it is clear] and will ask if the frequency is clear and wait almost no time [maybe 1/2 second] and proceed to commandeer the frequency. Those 'clear' frequencies are hard to find during one of the bigger contests. It is very possible that clear frequency is in use by a Net or just a QSO. Either way the contestant has not followed the Radio Amateur's Code. From the ARRL website: The Radio Amateur's Code The Radio Amateur is CONSIDERATE...The radio amateur never knowingly operates in such a way as to lessen the pleasure of others. LOYAL...The radio amateur offers loyalty, encouragement and support to other amateurs, local clubs, the IARU Radio Society in their country, through which Amateur Radio in their country is represented nationally and internationally. PROGRESSIVE...The radio amateur keeps their station up to date. It is well-built and efficient. Their operating practice is above reproach. FRIENDLY...The radio amateur operates slowly and patiently when requested; offers friendly advice and counsel to beginners; kind assistance, cooperation and consideration for the interests of others. These are the marks of the amateur spirit. BALANCED...Radio is a hobby, never interfering with duties owed to family, job, school or community. PATRIOTIC...The radio amateur's station and skills are always ready for service to country and community. - adapted from the original Amateur's Code, written by Paul M. Segal, W9EEA, in 1928 What is the first attribute? I have complained to both CQ and ARRL about the attitude they foster and CQ and ARRL responded by ignoring the problem and my complaint. I think the only realistic solution is a way that will cause the contestant a problem. There is none now. What if a pro golfer got caught cheating at a golf tournament?? Wouldn't that contestant be kicked out of the competition?? That is a solution. Maybe there should be levels or points once accumulated that would cause the Radio Amateur to be ousted from the current contest and if serious enough prevent that Amateur from log submission in future contests. This is such a serious problem that I am writing to you about this. What if the tables were turned? If non-contesters interfered with serious competitors, what would be the result today? Amateur Radio is not a function just for one group. That is what the contesters think it is. And no other function. Contesting does not trump other uses of Amateur Radio. I am a retired radio broadcast engineer. I am retired from two Universities. University of Missouri, Kansas City [KCUR] and Northern Illinois University [WNIU and WNIJ]. As an engineer I am not the best writer in the world. Therefore this message should be taken as a major complaint but written by someone who can only express it as someone who has a writing deficiency. I have been ignored on this subject before by the ARRL. I am a Life Member and do not appreciate that. I did not receive even an acknowledgement of the complaint before. That is nearly as bad as the contesters. I do wish that my identity be kept confidential because their actions on the air lead me to believe contesters are a bad lot and would not take criticism very well. Build Project Poll!!! 4
Hello there, as you all have heard - I really want to work on some build projects this year in addition to our wonderful presentations. So here is a poll I'd love to hear back from all of you on what kind of projects you'd be interested in participating in. The club would coordinate the project, we'd have tools and equipment, all the materials and everything there... all you'd need to do is show up and jump in. Once we know what projects everyone is interested in, we can put together costs for each project. Go check out the poll and let us know what you'd be interested in! https://forms.gle/8tK6tiu9rvPLFt6x5 Thanks, Jeremiah KC4CAD RARC President
