Re: ECO 520 anyone building?
I like to have a mechanical connection in addition to the epoxy when possible. Especially for joints under stress in high heat. Epoxy won't completely fail in high heat but it can turn soft and "slip" a little. Then when the temperature eventually drops, the joint can harden again in it's new location. At least this is my basic understanding. This slippage might only happen once, I'm not sure. But I feel better about having an interlocking connection to back it up. I'm building this boat in Texas and this summer has been really hot. I've measured temps of various surfaces in direct sunlight at over 150 degrees which is well above the glass transition temps of the epoxy that I'm using. Dark or black surfaces are even hotter. Additionally, the puzzle piece joint gives a 4 inch overlap between panels which is more than a 10:1 ratio for a scarf.

Re: ECO 520 anyone building?
Thanks for posting about your 520 build. As Bernd mentioned there is likely to be plenty of interest in this newer model. Looks like you have got planning in place for the various stages .

Re: D.R. Voyager 122
Bernd? Yes, seeing it all painted is a big thrill. Very tempting to launch before the inside is done but plan to finish the interior also before we launch. But we will keep it simple! At least that is the plan.? |

Re: ECO 520 anyone building?
Hi
Thank you for informing us that you are building an ECO 520.? As you can read, there are many interested persons here on this forum to learn more about the construction of the boat. If you would like to place some photos from your build here, we are very interested. A practical question. Why have you decided to connect the panels with this puzzle pattern system?? Cheers Bernd ? |

Re: D.R. Voyager 122
Hello Patrick
Nice to hear from you. It is a time ago.? It is a big project, and it is easy to get lost in details.? You had your fill, too, with this hurricane damage some time ago. Many had given up after that. Yes, the tube is heavy. But it is okay. I add a PDF file of the stability calculation, curves for the Voyager. The boat is in general is very stable. So there will be no problem.? The flat mainsail is, by the way, not only good for good windward performance. You can give more fullness by? regulating the mainsail with the mainsail outhaul.? I can imagine what a drill this was to see the boat in white. I like the photos anyway. You have not much place also to get a better view from the boat. You have a photo from the boat from the aft where the whole boat is shown. Can you try to make a photo from there? Will you finish the inside in your working place? Or as many do, when the boat is floating, better can be sailed too. Cheers Bernd |

Re: D.R. Voyager 122
We have been painting the Voyager. Now just the side decks remain to be top-coated including non-skid sprinkled and coated over.? I have not finished much of the inside yet except for the steps going down to each hull, but we have insulated completely the decks and the hulls sides.? And we have a mast waiting for us which is a 6063 aluminum round tube of 10 inch diameter (not tapered) and 0.21 inch wall thickness. It weighs 362 lbs. Heavier than a 6061 thin wall mast, but now extra stiff, especially side to side in comparison to a normal mast section.? No sail track for the rolling main set on a stay behind the mast. No extrusion on the furler. The entire stay will spin with the continuous line furling drive unit. The roller main should make the boat slower in light air than it would have been with a fat head main, but also be less sail area to manage. In theory it will also be possible to reef the sail traditionally if we ever need to.? The main sail will be a very shallow cut sail, following Bernd¡¯s recommendation. (Depth only 4% of the chorde) And it will only be about 32 m^2. So we might get a big gennaker to add some sail area.? I took some pictures but the lighting was bad so they are very grainy. Seeing the boat turn white was a thrill. And a lot of work.? Cheers |

Re: ECO 520 anyone building?
I started building the ECO 520 two months ago and have been posting detailed videos on the Make Way Projects YouTube channel. I'm building in my two car garage which is barely large enough. I'm also slightly changing some of the dimensions so my version will be a bit longer and wider. The first month was spent mostly getting ready, sourcing materials, studying the plans, and building a platform with wheels that I'll be building the boat on top of. In the second month, I've managed to come up with a way to join the plywood pieces with an interlocking puzzle pattern and have prepared both outside hull sides. I'm working on the keel bottoms now.

Re: ECO 520 anyone building?
There was a builder contacted me from Florida USA about a year ago to talk about his 520 that he had started. But he got caught up in the cyclone and his build was delayed, and since then I never heard from him, I havent seen any other 520 builders publishing anything. Bernd has? some great designs in this smaller range . You cant go wrong with choices like these, the 480,? 520,? 5.5,? 6, and not to mention Cataproa (now 2 sizes). I have been lucky enough now to have followed the build, and most cases sailed on? here in New Zealand of: Duo480 (mine),? the5.5,? the 6, and the KD650. All great boats?
As Bernd says: "pick one and build it" cheers |

Re: ECO 520 anyone building?
I believe that may be the 550 not the newer 520. Correct me if i am wrong. In any case I am very interested to see any 520 builds, especially to compare the the Duo480
