Wow. Just wow. The construction and the perseverance to push through to completion. Amazing. And the result? Absolutely outstanding. When I look at the dates of the photos and then consider the amount of work required to get to each point during construction, I am in awe of those who are able to sustain their resolve. At the end of my recent 15 month build, I was done. I cannot imagine continuing on for 10 more years, and to have done so and raised a young family and held down a job at the same time. Big respect. Pete. I wish you and your family many years of sailing.

Whitsunday area in Australia.Hello Brian Interesting find, and thanks for posting. I get irregular/ regular information from people who have found one of my designs modified. As a designer, I can do nothing about when people change my original design. A boat plan is not brought to you from a wimp of a moment. But calculations and practical considerations stay in the beginning. Of course, my long-year experience also plays a role. But in the end, as long as the builder is happy with the result, it is okay.? The sail area is very small. By the way, it would be possible to use a jib also with a rotating (roll furling) rig. Cheers? Bernd |

Duo480c from Australia
Hi all, I came across this boat recently on social media and contacted the builder. Lachlan built this boat and several others for cruising in the Whitsunday area in Australia. With his permission I am posting it here as it is both a nice looking example of the 480 , but also has a few interesting features. As you can see it has a single mast setup which is based on the Laser sailing dinghy using mast, boom and sail from that design. I expected with a sail plan like that, being only around 7m2 it would be grossly underpowered but he says with the strong winds typical in his area he frequently sailed around 10 knots. The Duo 480 sail area is specified around the 17 m2 area which is what my own 480 has, and I have sat on 10 knots or better for long runs at a time. So to learn about similar speeds obtained with a much smaller sail area is a testimony to the hull speed potential of this design of Bernd's.?
The sail furls around the unstayed mast similar to the bi plane rig set up that is "standard". Other interesting features include the anchor handling at the front over a solid platform in place of a trampoline and twin rudders that are "borrowed" from some model of beach catamaran. Lachlan has since sold the boat? . Regards, Bryan ![]() |

Re: Payment for this group is due
I used a scale to get exact amount of epoxy and hardner. The reason it didn't harden was because i didn't mix it enough, after mixing it still looked cloudy with micro bubbles. The second time i mixed until all tgese bubbles was gone and let it set for couple minutes then mixed more. Now i know how to properly mix epoxy. Now it's boat building time.? Nobody did something wrong. We can have misinterpretations and understandings, but we sort these out here. As done by these. To the Epoxy. I think it was not the stirring but the wrong mixture. Epoxy is sensitive to this. Remember: Hardener and component two form together, Epoxy. When you have one too much, it can not be cure. The whole lot stays soft. Bernd |

Re: Payment for this group is due
Chris you didn't do or say anything wrong. Things are seen and read by different people and most will have a different understanding of what was really meant. Now back to my epoxy mixing that didn't work out my first time. After 3 hours it's still gooey. I don't think i mixed it long enough.thats why i used pieces of wood for trials a not boat material. Re: Payment for this group is due
Hello, After some more time to reflect on my poor behaviour¡ I can only offer a humble apology. I have shown some of the terrible side of humanity. I think the group and like minded people are an increfmdibly healthy thing for small boats whether you are a dreamer or not. I am 100% guilty as I have certainly purchased more plans than I have built!!! I hope I have not taken too much from the positivity and joy that this group and small boats bring. My roots are dinghy racing and as broad as square rig sailing and presently in my 25 th year as a saturation diver in the offshore. I have owned every manner of craft but can honestly say the fondest memories have been in small simple boats with good friends. Please understand that I am embarrassed with my comments. Kind regards,Chris On Sat, Nov 18, 2023 at 1:25 PM chris oneil via <oneilsubsea=[email protected]> wrote:

Hi Firstly an apology for anyone my comments offended. I do not know any of you or the designer. My motivation for the email was for Bernd to get something back in the form of an recognition and an apology for all the emails. All the best with your builds. Hi Chris, what did we (and, more specifically, I!) do wrong? In this thread we were merely responding to Bernd's request to help with funding to keep this forum alive. That's what I did once the error with the email address had been cleared up. It was only $10 that I contributed but it's not clear to me how doing so was evidence of me bothering Bernd.
But I am 'dreaming' right now, and in my first post in this thread I made it clear that I may well end up not buying a full plan set, but also I stated that I think this forum is a great resource in addition to the information within the small number of Bernd's study plans that I have purchased. I expect that study plans' revenue is useful for Bernd or he would not sell them, as well as helping dreamers like me narrow down their search and occasionally leading to an actual build project. Apologies, Adrian |

Re: Payment for this group is due
Very true Chris, i purchased the eco6 plans october 2 or 3, i got a strong back made which i didn't have to go that way but i thought it would help keep everything in place. I measured, marked and cut out bulkheads for 1 hull and cut out the stringer and chine notches and was ready to apply epoxy to seal the plywood and then i was hit with a very bad virus, 4 weeks and it's almost over now. The worst sinus infection i have ever seen, couldn't lay down cause i would start coughing. No doctors and i have beat it and i plan to begin work again on the boat monday. A month behind but hey it doesn't matter. I'm glad i decided to build this boat and if it turns out ok i plan on building a kd860 for more sailing freedom. Everyone needs to experience what it is like to build a boat. I know i will feel blessed the day it touches water. Happy sailing from Philippines. Hi Giuseppe, do you have email notifications turned on for this forum? If so, please look at today's emails. You will see that the email addresses are shown in full in those notifications. For some reason, when viewing this online forum, groups.io truncates any email addresses so they all look the same!
But hopefully this method works: bernd at?ikarus342000 dot com |

Re: Payment for this group is due
Your statement is quite confusing, Berndt. Taken literally, it implies that we should also use other addresses, not only this one. I doubt if that is actually the meaning you intended. Rand Dosey, Iloilo, Philippines On Mon, 13 Nov 2023, 10:21 pm Bernd Kohler, <ikarus342000@...> wrote:
