A few questions about the minicruiser 480.

Michael Mitchell

So far I have purchased 4 different sets of plans from you. The Eco 5.5,Eco 6.0, little tri and the 480.
I have decided to build the 480 due to the oversized trailer and material cost. The type of sailing I do is open bays and coastal Gulf of Mexico. We have unpredicted thunderstorms in the afternoon and this results in gust of around 25 knots and 3 ft seas. My concerns are about safety (capsized). I used to sail the same waters in a sloop 23 FT long. That put the rail under unless I deeply reef the sail. I loved it but scares my wife to tears.
So the 480 is 16 ft long and about 7 feet wide.?
The questions.
1. Since my wife gets scared I would have to completely furl the sails. What horsepower motor would it take to push the boat at hull speed?
2. I find that even used windsurfer mask are very pricey. Do you have suggestion as to how to build my own out of spruce or carbon fiber. Or lightweight aluminum tube .
3. I really would rather have the sails made using sail slides with slugs (not rotating).
4. Can a sloop rig with jib be used instead of parallel. I would support the mast using the same construction as the Eco 6 or a tabernacle mounted to the coach roof.?
If this can be done what height of mast above the roof should I use. What would be the sail area . This should be as safe as the parallel rig and hopefully as fast. Used Hobie mast are pretty reasonable but would require stays as the Eco 6.
5. Are the drawings you furnished such as to be able to sleep two.
5. Will a chemical head be useed.

Love your designs. If I were rich I would have built a bluewater cat? from your designs.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Jib track placement.

Difficult to answer in writing.
I will try. For high on the wind, the opening angle should be 7 degrees. The jib sheet angle to the sheave has to be 45 degrees. The angle of the trailing edge.
These two angles give you the position of the track aft end. Position the track in a way that these "opens by about 10 degrees towards the bow.
I hope this is clear enough to help

Bernd?

Re: COVID-19

Hi Jack

Thank you for your quick response.
Good to hear that you used/use the Covid situation to speed your work on the boat.
Not so good that your business went out of operation. Do you get some compensation which is available in Germany??
In some countries, it is/was impossible to get material.?
Here in France, we can order online. Epoxy and glass fiber no problem. But with the general bad quality of wood, I did not dare to buy plywood or wood.
It has to be inspected personally to select for reasonable quality
How far are you with your catamaran.
I like your party's remark...
Success
Bernd

Re: COVID-19

Hi Bernd,

Covid 19 helpt me to speed up the build of the extended ECO 75 catamaran ( electric ECO 85 ) which I'm building. This because we spend holidays at home, where I build every morning till 12 and spend the rest of the day with my wife and son.?
There where no parties and no headache the morning after.
Without Covid I spend pretty much time on renting and repairing professional sound systems, that business came complete to an end, and still nearly zero.
All this extra time is spend on the catamaran.
I had no issues in getting materials, everything can still be ordered online.

So I hope to have the "Ilios" in the water next spring.

Regards, Jack

Jib track placement.

Hello every one.
Need an advice on jib tracks placement . I am thinking to have a 110% jib, My tracks are 1.2 meter long.
Regards
Vlad.

COVID-19

COVID-19 affects also us going on with our project. Many restrictions in almost all countries around the world. Shops closed to buy materials.
The material out of stock. Curve's, so you can not go to the place where you have your project under construction and so on.
How do you manage, project only on hold or stopped completely?
If you like, tell us your experience. And, the eventual solution to go on with your project.

Re: Duo 900 Italy

Bernd in February I called a company in northern Italy who told me that they produce pipes of all sizes up to a maximum of 250mm in diameter, in a week they would arrive.
I called last week and in 7 days they arrived.
The problem was that in January until May I was unable to work (except for a few days) due to other works on other boats.
I think that for the DUO900 and for an experienced person like me, with 60 days of full-time work the boat is complete.

PS we are ready for the second construction of the KD122 Italy.
We bought all the building materials. In October we leave for construction, southern Italy Palmi (Messina strait) near the great volcano Etna. besides working I will be able to admire his activity which in this year is very active.

Re: Duo 900 Italy

Hi Domenico

Great, so strange, here in France I have problems getting Aluminiumtubes.

Cheers

Re: 3 photos uploaded #photo-notice

Hi Bernd
The continuously curved deckhouse walls worked out well. I like them. The angles of the forward part of the roof and the middle part of the roof are close to the original. We built the roof rather quickly so I had to make some fast decisions about it. I am slowly learning to build a little faster.?

Thanks for all your advice.?

Patrick

Re: 3 photos uploaded #photo-notice

Hi Patrick

Thanks for the photos. The deckhouse looks special but good.
I like also the aft beam.

Cheers Bernd

Re: Eco 520 Study Plans?

carlos

This might be the model that may work with wheel chair and handicap passengers. I have to see if the people at Shake-a-leg in Mismi are interested. Could be a good summer project for the kids to build and be part of the fleet of boats they have.

Re: Eco 520 Study Plans?

Hello Patrick

Thank you reporting the mistake. I will correct it after this mail here

The tabernacle is shown in the study plan.
To the sails, no specific requirements. Every sail maker can make the sails

Best regards

Good day,

I¡¯m intrigued by the Eco 520 and have added it to the mix of possibilities for next winter¡¯s project. Will you be making a study plan available? ?I¡¯m particularly interested in mast, tabernacle and sail rigging details. ?I think I saw a fairly detailed brochure on line for the 520, but can¡¯t find it now.

Patrick Gilman?
Hi Patrick

I send you here an info sheet about the boat.
The rigging is a jib rig with roll furlers. No profile, only on a normal 4 mm wire stay.
The unit to fold the mast is mentioned at the list of materials. Can be ordered at Amazon.

Re: Apollo

Ciao Jack
?
Yes, but I'll make a cover that protects from the sun until the two hulls are painted.

Chia Domenico
Looks good, but only one month to finish the boat??
I know you work fast, but this will be difficult.

Nice job, and great progress!
Do you plan to finish the boat outside?
