Pent Up House
#Improv
#SonnyRollins
Can we discuss Pent Up House for a second? In regards to playing this tune, a guy teaching it whose opinion I respect has said that he's always played this Sonny Rollins tune with the "blowing changes", as listed in a couple of Real Books, which are Am7 - D7 - GMaj7 - - Am7 - D7 - GMaj7 - - Dm7 - G7 - Cm7 - F7 - Am7 - D7 - GMaj7 - - However, the changes over the melody seem to be CMaj7/D - D7(b9,#5) - CMaj7/D - D7(b9,#5) - GMaj9 - Ab9 - GMaj9 - - CMaj7/D - D7(b9,#5) - CMaj7/D - D7(b9,#5) - GMaj9 - Ab9 - GMaj9 - Dm7 - G7(b9, #5) - Cm9 - F13 - Dm7 - G7(b9, #5) - Cm9 - F13 - GMaj9 - Ab9 - GMaj9 - - I can see that both sets of changes are similar, but it sounds to me like Rollins sticks to the posted changes. I haven't heard much of other versions of the tune. Is it standard procedure to the more vanilla "blowing changes" for the whole tune? Anyone else do this? |

Thanks for the post, Rick,
I heard about it only a short while ago. Vic was a masterful guitarist and musician, and a true educator and gentleman. He is sorely missed already, and will continue to be so always. Bobby |

Re: Remembering “Zeek” Duff
Dave Woods was a really nice guy, and a dear man. His passing so suddenly due to his slip & fall was a shock.
I didn't know about Zeek. He was a really nice guy, also. This List has gone through several changes over the years. While we sadly are left to reflect upon them, if not for this List we would not have known them at all. While some have become dear friends personally, I appreciate all of you. I wish you all a Happy, Healthy, and Musical New Year. Bobby Hansmann |
Remembering “Zeek” Duff
Larry G. “Zeek” Duff 12/27/1946-4/18/2019 ? Zeek was a long time member of this Jazz discussion group, all around good player and great guy. He made lots on contributions, in particular and notably on Lenny Breau. Over the period of time he contributed, I got to know him pretty well. Somewhere in the distant past I remember telling him that his last name Duff was Scottish and in Scottish Gaelic dubh means "dark", it was term used in the past often for those from Pictish descent who had dark skin, he got a kick out of that.? My last contact with him was just a few days before he died. At that time he was telling me how after Yahoo had basically destroyed this jazz guitar discussion group with Neo, he’d ended up contributing to Quora.com. Over the period time he’d answered so many questions on many subjects that he was surprised to learn he’d just been nominated for Quora’s Top Writers program, which publicly recognizes individuals who had made especially valuable content contributions to the site. I can’t find the tribute I wrote for him at the time, but in lieu of it, here’s Zeek in his own words, RIP: Zeek: ? “60+ years of playing guitar. I don’t know where some of these descriptions come from like “Master of MIDI Recording.” I’ve never said that, although it’s mostly true. I’m a professional musician, have been for 50+ years, primarily on guitar (played for 10 years before become a full-time pro), but I also play bass and keyboards and I use MIDI a lot. I learned to read music on cornet in grade school, but haven’t played a cornet or trumpet in years. I’ve played in huge concerts and recorded with some notable artists in major studios, and I performed live for most of my career. But, I had to retire from performing due to my back 24 years ago. I still play & record in my home studio called “The Blue Wall Studio” and my production company is called “WHAT!Productions!” that I created in 1988.” From: ? “LG ”Zeek” Duff - Guitarist, Composer, Arranger, Recording Artist, MIDI Expert (applied Musical Instrument Digital Interface), and Performer - with over 50 years of experience playing and recording professionally with noteworthy artists and his own aggregations, featuring a broad variety of styles, original compositions, and arrangements of familiar popular music. While Zeek’s music industry experience includes years of doubling on keyboard synthesizers and bass guitar, he is now focused on recording and performing Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar.” From: ? Scott, Thanks for your kind words. I appreciate you too. The one thing life and playing music teaches you, is you have to live in the moment, coz it's over before you know it... Re: Remembering Dave Woods
Remembering Dave Woods,
I often recall the many long nights of conversations I’d have with Dave, who I considered a good friend and confidant in “jazz guitar” and all its allurements to the musical muse in us all. Dave and I shared many charts, lessons, ideas, approaches, and a whole host of seemingly experimental and hot-off-the presses of our eclectic modal-minds for the enticement of the “vamp” and the “moving bass line,” with nowhere to go but back to the drawing board and carve out a new symbiotic universe of niche notes reaching for the stars. When I wrote out a most dear and heartwarming attempt to chord-melodize his father’s "Try A Little Tenderness,” I sent it and my recording to Dave — not so much for his approval—but more out of sincere and heartfelt umbrage for the talents and antics of his father whom I often walked past in the Brill Building in NYC when I studied with Barry Galbraith, a few doorsteps down the hall from where Harry Woods would rehearse a new song for the Morris Agency. I never knew who Harry Woods was at that time since the 70s until I met Dave Woods right here in this forum. Dave Woods will forever remain a friend in my heart of hearts of music that I cherish and love, and for the precious legacy of treasured piece of Americana music his father, Harry Woods left us. Thank you, John Amato |

Alisdair,? I found out when I went to wish him Happy Birthday. We had many chats on line.
So while I am at it, I want to say that I am honored to have met you too, Alisdair. One of the other really good ones I met here. I want you to hear that from me, now. And not wait to post a tribute. I wish I had told both Zeek and Dave that. But I suspect they knew. Thanks for posting this Alisdair. I just mentioned him today to Doc Dosco, when I found out about another former member of the group's passing, Zeek Duff.
Both were generous souls, that I was honored to meet on the internet, in this group. ?

Unfortunately he slipped on some ice and really tumbled badly, hitting his head. At the time I wrote a tribute to him with a brief obituary. I have cut and pasted it below as I never posted at the time in this group. RIP: Dave Woods, Guitarist & all around good guy! I'm very sadden hear of the passing of Dave Woods. Many years ago I met Dave on the Internet and we struck up an online friendship. During the 60's and 70's David Woods worked as a guitarist, arranger, and record producer in New York City. He worked for Polydor, Verve Forecast Records, and Decca Records, Dave worked with artists such as McKendree Spring, Dave Van Ronk, Scott Fagan and Bobby Vinton. Dave also ran his own publishing company Callicoon Music ASCAP. Dave was deeply involved in the social problems of his community, he conducted Jazz and Blues guitar workshops in Green Haven Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison. Through music, he tried to keep the kids out of jail, and if they got there, he tried to give them something to use when they were released. "Music," as Dave would say "is also a journey within if you're never going to get out." My father had met and work with his father the late great song writer Harry M. Woods. Harry was one of the great songwriters, "When the Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobin Along", "I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover", "Try A Little Tenderness", and many many more. Sadly, in the last few years Dave and his not profit "Music to Light" in Poughkeepsie, New York which helped inner city kids how to create music, struggled financially, because of the lack of Royalties from his father's great songs. He was suffering like many musicians today from Big Techs wealth transference from those of us who create to Big Tech. Just look around there are many illegal uploads and non-licensed versions of his fathers songs. This is the legacy of Big Tech. RIP: Dave. Sad to hear of your passing. ?

Re: We've Moved YJGG To groups.io/g/Jazz-Guitar
#jgadmin
From Yahoo Dec 21, 2019: "We have now taken down all user content from the Yahoo Groups website" RIP: Yahoo Groups We got out just in time. It has been a horrendous amount of work to get things moved. Yahoo was completely unreliable and often timed out or went down during the various transfer stages. We managed to get most messages, some of the files, but as you can see due to technical issues, many members did not make it. During that transfer we've tried to ensure we kept your existing settings (Individual messages, Digest, No Mail etc). But obviously check your settings and see that they are the way you like them. We backed up everything from Yahoo and so hope to be able to able to add those members, messages and files that did not make it, as time allows. On 开云体育 you have a main profile and then a profile for each group you are a member of. You can customize your profile for each group you are subscribed to. Changes made to your account profile will automatically apply to each group profile, with the exception of those specific fields in each group profile that you've previously customized.? With your profile, you can add a photo and write whatever you like about yourself, or you can choose to keep your profile hidden and/or something in-between. Files As we get going, one of the biggest area we need to work on is the Files area. On Yahoo we regularly ran out of space and so for a time period we moved the files over to a separate site and file archive (). Unfortunately, the traffic to the website was so high, we had to stop hosting them there as we would have to upgrade and I would have either have to pay for commercial hosting or try raising funds to fund it. Neither of which I wanted to do and unlike most sites today, I wanted the group to remain non-commercial.? That unfortunately meant a lot of files were no longer available. The good news is we have lots more file space and will have all the files in one place. So we've decided we'll upload the files area with the existing files we had on Yahoo and then as time allows steadily re-organize and add literally the thousands of files members uploaded over the now 30+ years. It's incredible to think how long this group has been going. It's predated virtually everything now on the internet, by years, and we have certainly seen some major changes in the music industry! It will take sometime to get things really running well and everything updated. Please be patient, check and update your profile, take a look around the site, familiarize yourself with all the features and functions.? Tell your friends we are back up and running. Post gigs (use the hashtag #Gig). Feel free to post any ideas or suggestions, Enjoy! ??? |
