JackAL source code 2
Having downloaded the JackAl source code from http://hamradiodesigns.com/index.php/content/ a couple of questions come to mind. 1. I don'r see a LICENSE file. Is the code Open Source? If so, under what license? 2. Is there a source repository somewhere where interested contributors can offer patches for corrections / improvements etc? Thanks, MC VK1MC

calibration of keys on diaplay 2
it seems that anything i do to calibrate the screen nothing happens. from the manual pt 1. 1. the unit has been on and off many times so the first time cal does not work 2. the keys do nothing when touched so that method does not work 3. the //InitDisplayCalibration (); line was already uncommented so that does not work. what am i doing wrong and how can i get the calibration screen to come up so as to finish the setup of the software? dave k7da

Initial Tests 3
Just wanted to say that my initial tests with just the JackAl board and display went very well. No magic smoke but the 3.3 V Reg. does get a little warm- even with a 4 inch heat sink. 73, Guy WB7SZI

7 inch Screen Calibration 19
Jack, so..couple of questions. 1. In order to calibrate the screen (if it didn't happen at turn on), what must be connected to the JackAl board? uBitx? or anything other than the display? (of course power is assumed on) 2. according to the instructions was to uncomment out val = 0 in EEPROMNew.cpp but with JackAlv095 we have the following: void ReadUserSettings() { int val; EEPROM.get(0, val); // Read first byte of EEPROM memory //val = 0; // Uncomment this line forces a rewrite of EEPROM. Comment out line 23 to display // is not changed. Serial.print("Val = "); Serial.println(val); if (val != EEPROMINITVALUE) { // Already set or not? GlobalDefaultEEPROMValues(); // No, so set some common values WriteEEPROMSettings(EEPROMDEFAULTOFFSET); // Write default values to default block WriteEEPROMSettings(EEPROMUSEROFFSET); // Also assume defaults for user first time through // InitDisplayCalibration(); // Now have them calibrate display Serial.println("After initcal"); } ReadEEPROMSettings(EEPROMUSEROFFSET); } so now line 18..got that.. so it also says to comment out line 23 should that be done? then run the InitDisplayCalibration so the next time powered up, i should expect the Screen Cal Routine to show up? Thanks Vince n2aie

New Wiring Harness Assembly Instructions, Display Protection Circuit. 4
All: Several of you have written me saying that you were having difficulty making the wiring harness for the JackAl system because the directions weren't clear. (I believe the word "sucks" was used once, too!) Fact is, what I wrote does suck and I fear it was as bad as it was because I was "too close" to the project. I've taken a number of steps back and reexamined the documentation and agreed it needed to be rewritten. I have attached the new instructions for assembling the harness and Al has added a bunch of new photos to go with it. I think you will find these instructions much more clear. We've had two people write to us saying their displays have been "blown". Al has looked into this and corresponded to the manufacturer. While they are saying that their spec documents are correct and that the display can tolerate up to 4V, we're convinced it's a little more sensitive than that to overvoltage.and voltage spikes. For that reason, Al designed a small perf board circuit that clamps the voltage so the display will not be subject to any overvoltage problems. While less than 1 percent of the buyers have had any problems, if you think your power supply might be subject to such issues, Al's circuit will help. Again, hopefully the new harness instructions are "less sucky"! Jack, W8TEE

V5 software update? 2
Hey Jack, Looked at your site, but didn't yet find your new v5 updates. Now that my v5 board is here, ( and the new teensey), is it going to be available soon? Anything I can do to help? 73's Ron W0QVJ

Build notes from a geezer 3
Finished the 1st one and It's ok, but I'm pretty sure it can be done a lot better. Some mistakes: Ordered my box before I sized the display, so limited myself to a 5" display Built my power supply before I found out the total current draw, so it needed to be done twice. Tried to use my sabre saw to cut out the display hole.(!) Got the hole big enough, and managed to mount all 4 display corners on standoffs, but I'm going to need to find a way to patch the gubered saw job. Bought too many parts. (Way too many mistakes from a 50 year veteran!) Some things for improvement: Starting from scratch I bought a box big enough for the 7" display, (again steel, blue, from china), will use my dremel or nibbler to make the display hole! Bought the v5 ubitx and noticed the offensive relays and inductors remain on my new v5 board. Plan to replace A buying mistake that turned out well was the replacement signal relays from eBay. The ones i bought do the job for 1/3 current draw.. My new power supply has a transformer capable of 100 va, and it's got multi-taps, so my next Jackal won't have any 3.3 v regulators that get too hot, or 12v neither. For the future: The 3904's are barely functional above 30 mhz (and the 1st if's 45 mhz). There are bunches of better parts for most of them. My new power supply has a tap for 50v so the final is probably going to need bigger heat sinks and fet's and I don't like push-pull- parallel amplifier stages, when push -pull will do. My thoughts from the 1st one while getting ready to do a better one. A lot of fun so far! Ron W0QVJ

Johannes: QRP Guys stacks the orders for a single delivery day each week. This means you might lose 7 days right there. Then there is shipping to Germany, plus the delay through Customs, and finally local delivery within Germany. I'm assuming you ordered on March 19 (Not May 19), so it's only been 10 days. QRP Guys are extremely reliable, so I'm certain you will get your board soon. schematics again :-) 3
Hello group, I noticed a problem in the wiring diagram of the encoders, fig 2-29 and 2-30, on figure 2-30 it misses a wire between J11 and "CL" of the tuning encoder, would it be possible to correct in the new doc? at the same time specify the pin 1 of the J11 socket on fig 2-30. thank you very much for the work done. USB Connected- NoAudio-Solved 3
Jack, The problem turned out to be in the IDE and Windows 10. I had originally set the IDE to communicate with the Teensy using Raw HID as that was what Win10 first identified it as and in the IDE selected Raw Hid. That worked OK for programming with the IDE. Somewhere along the line in the last several months Windows 10 updates decided to emulate a serial port under the Port selection for the Teensy and dropped Raw Hid (COM4 sometimes COM6 depending on plug-in position in the computer.). I also read on someone's message to you where they were selecting "All of the Above" for USB type and not hearing anything negative I too selected that option which may still be OK. The Teensy programmed fine with these settings except for the audio interference leaving hooked up after programming. Last night remembering the "Raw Hid" setting in the IDE I reset it and selected "Raw Hid" for USB type and deselected "All of the Above". When I plugged the USB cable back in the Teensy identified itself with the raw hid and pid # as a port selection. With this setting the USB cable plugged in no longer interferes with the "Filter" settings and "no audio" as described earlier. I also verified that I am still able to reprogram the Teensy from the IDE. Windows 10 updates can be a pain! Sorry to have bothered you but knowing that no one else had reported the problem and you were not experiencing that issue allowed me to just dig deeper. Of course not being able to use a COM Port selection may be an issue later with CAT implementation and WSJT-X. Cross that bridge when I come to it! Rick KN4AIE

USB Connected- NoAudio 4
Jack, JAckAlV095 Another bug that you are probably already aware of but thought I would pass it by you. Discovered it while using the debug monitor. With the USB connected to the computer the JackAl audio will turn off except as noted below with these filter settings. SSB Filter- audio on only with filter NONE selected CW Filter- audio on with filter 150, 300, 400, NONE. Audio off with 600, CUST Could not figure out why when I plugged in the USB the JackAl audio quit until I accidently selected NONE on the filter. Second Teensy audio board does the same thing. The ubitx audio out was unaffected with the USB plugged in. I was trying to troubleshoot because I eventually want to use CAT with FT8/WSJT-X, USB plugged in all the time. Rick KN4AIE
