Re: BOM vs Schematics

The latest I have is attached. I'll check with Al tomorrow to see if there is a later one. Also, don't forget that the JackAl board has all the SMD parts mounted on it.

Subject: [JackAl] JackAl Dilemma - I think I fried it

Good afternoon,

I think I may have fried my JackAl PCB.
-Connected only programmed Teensy 3.6,? 5" touchscreen and 12 volt DC supply
-JackAl screen came up and all looked good
-Then after about 60s the screen went blank and LED on Teensy came on and stayed on
-Power cycling made no difference
-Reprogrammed Teensy 3.6 with BLINK program and LED blinks as expected so I suspect Teensy is OK.? Reprogrammed with JackAl
-I have no idea how to troubleshoot the display
-I went over everything and eventually found a HUGE MISTAKE on my part.? Instead of 7805 I had installed 7812 for U2.
-I remvoed U2 and installed correct 7805 but I think at this point the damage was already done for symptoms did not change

Short of buying another JackAl PCB does anyone have any suggestions or can anyone repair the JackAl PCB?

Much thanks,

Every time we attempt to fix the site, it's hacked again, so we've pretty much given up for now. Most of the JackAl files can be access through the group: JackAl groups.io Group

Re: JackAl Basketcase FS

Thanks a lot Jack. The instructions you have written are pretty clear, so hopefully I can reproduce your success when I finally get time to work on this (presuming the JackAl board doesn't turn into petrified wood in the interim!)

Re: JackAl Basketcase FS

No. His cables were wired incorrectly, to the point where he blew a BITX board. Al gave him a V3 extra board we had here so he could continue on, but each time we fixed something, it failed on his end. We don't know what happened. Our JackAl's have been used both in our homes and on trips afield and have worked well. Clearly, it is important to wire things correctly, and we know that the one cable was difficult to fabricate. However, we wrote a doc file just for that cable and think it is much easier to build now.

JackAl Basketcase FS

Officially throwing in the towel on this one. Gone through several expensive 5 inch displays and even had one of the designers add a protection board to yet another new display. The display (or the protection board) failed in a puff of smoke within minutes of trying out the repaired display. The uBitx never stopped receiving just the display failed. However, I refuse to spend another dime or hour on this project. I've built many radios at least as complicated such as 2 all-SMD mcHF radios without such headaches. ?

I'm not blaming anyone but just moving on.

So selling it as a case with mostly working parts just to salvage some value from this venture. What is included is a fully built, tested and working JackAL board, and working and tested V3 uBitx board, 2 encoders, push button, 3 stereo jacks, volume pot with on/off switch and a possibly repairable 5 inch display with protection board that failed at it's task, and the steel case I mounted it all in.

I'm asking $145 which includes shipping (US only). This is about the price of a uBitx board by itself.?

Please respond off the list direct to my email. ?I will not be checking back here. ?Email is ?pmeier @ me . com

Re: Places to get the JackAl board?

James:

QRPGuys.com is the only place we have authorized to sell the JackAl boards. From their first page:

We ship product via First Class U.S.P.S., once a week, domestic and international to all countries except Italy and Korea.?

If you ordered on the 2nd, and suppose their "ship day" is the 2nd, your order won't go to the PO until the 9th. Your tracking number was on the 12th, which I'm sure was caused by the Fourth of July holiday and meant the normal ship date was when the PO was closed. I think you just got whipsawed by the holiday. QRP Guys is an honest vendor and you will get your order.
