Kearsarge Pass -> Rae Lakes Loop OR Kearsarge -> Cottonwood/Horseshoe
8
Hi all, I am considering a late season trip next week or the week after - prefer next week. Looks like the roads are open and permits can be had, no problem. Besides bundling up, what else is to be considered? And recent trip reports? Cheers, Rick

El Ni?o Winters
13
Hello all. I understand that we are in an El Ni?o cycle and I’m not sure what that means for snowfall in the Sierras. I have been googling around and have found references to drier winters in the western US as well as pieces that say the El Ni?o cycle is likely to help CA’s water situation (presumably by dumping more snow). Any thoughts?

JMT without the bridges

With all of the discussion of the bridges being out on the JMT this season, I was thinking... What was the original route of the trail? There surely were no bridges in the early days. People traversing the trail is one thing, what about stock? -Rick B.

Seeking Goodale/Silver Pass Fording/ Trail Conditions update
3
Has anybody forded near Goodale or Silver pass this August? I read some gnarly stories of sketchy/scary fording on All trails along with snow and trouble navigating the trail in August. If anyone has any recent experiencer input on this, I'd appreciate it.

Another lightweight used sales offer for carrying your bear canister on the outside bottom of a pack.
3
I see it was alright, in the last couple of days, to post about a lightweight pack that can carry bear canisters at the outside, bottom of a pack. I have another such pack for sale. I found out in selling my first pack that shipping costs are outrageous when done individually. The buyer of my just sold pack paid $48 shipping. Had it been listed on Facebook Marketplace, with Facebook's prepaid shipping labels, it would have only been $17. It's a Seek Outside Revolution Suspension Frame Pack for sale (does not include the illustrative Zpacks Airplane Case, which I did use in my 2017 6 week hike doing a John Muir Trail – Plus (extra mileage) hike. When new, cost is $462, asking $112 which does include shipping. Total weight of sale items: 3.4 pounds. This pack is sturdy enough to carry 150 pounds. In my detailed sales PDF, there are accessories you may want to get for this pack to fully fit it out for your long distance hike. Total weight of the accessories (hip belt pockets, shoulder pockets, and Zpacks Dyneema Airplane Case Bag will still keep total pack weight under 4 pounds. What I am selling does not include any of the accessories. It only includes what is shown prior to this page! https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/685338850149063/ See https://drive.google.com/file/d/19tOSr1z6ysEVRwT3hS8eHp-ZAfyrduaR/view?usp=drive_link for total details. Call me or text if interested. 952-905-0822. I recommend you buy through Facebook Marketplace to save $30 on shipping costs. Guy in photo is a friend I met on the trail. I took the pictures after hiking 200 miles on that JMT+ hike. What I am selling does not include the Zpacks Airplane Case or the Bearikade Bear Canister (nor the solar panel on top). Read the PDF for full understanding. Gear was only used on one JMT hike and is in very good condition. Gear is still being sold (links to each item is in the PDF). It's sold by an ultralight backpack hunting gear company, Seek Outside.

I hope this Post is okay to make. Zpacks used to make custom made backpacks that held the Bearikade Bear Cans beneath the (elevated) backpack.

I hope this Post is okay to make. Zpacks used to make custom made backpacks that held the Bearikade Bear Cans beneath the (elevated) backpack. The year was 2013, but I have only used the pack on two hikes. It's still very useable. Over $500 of labor and material went into the pack. I'm selling this pack for $75 plus buyer pays shipping from Fallon NV. It is still very useable. Pictures of the pack are here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EscI-ShQZ73KaXn4oUpwY9zNObWuRRJl/view?usp=sharing I put in extra padding in the pack to make it more comfortable (as anyone will notice). The stays are incredibly light and strong, they were my by the ultralight hunting, external frame, backpack company, Kifau (far stronger than any stays ever made by Zpacks). The belt is also from Kifaru and far more comfortable than any belt made by Zpacks. The pack weighs 2 lbs, 14.2 ounces. Not ultralight, but very comfortable and can easily accommodate 70-85 liters of stuff. Great for a parent needing to carry weight for a child as well as their own (or a wife who wants assistance). I can supply written proof this is a custom made pack from Joe Valesko of Zpacks upon request. Email me directly for questions, you can also call me at 952-905-0822. The displayed bear can is not included, of course.

PCTA San Joaquin bridge closure update
68
The PCTA has updated their San Joaquin river bridge closure page with bypass information. The write up sounds like they coordinated with Inyo NF, but they don't specify this. Most of the information is for PCTA permit holders, but there is some discussion of local permit holders. They say that the continuous travel requirement is being waived for the bypass, however you must travel by road directly between the two trailheads. No going into Bishop to resupply. There are other restrictions mentioned. Here's the link. https://www.pcta.org/discover-the-trail/closures/central-california/south-fork-san-joaquin-river-bridge-damaged/ Frank -- Frank

Inyo Permits - 2 Week Window
11
I have a permit for Cottonwood Lakes on September 5 but I am planning to try to change this to a Kearsarge/Onion Valley permit two weeks prior to the entry date (so on August 22). From what I am seeing right now for permits released two weeks out, there is no big rush for the 40% of Inyo permits released two weeks prior to the hike date. Has this been the general experience so far this year? Also, is the timing for permit release still 7 am pacific? I'm very excited about getting out into the Sierra Nevada for the first time in a few years, if only for a 4-5 night trip due to commitments at home precluding a full thru hike this year. If I can snag a Kearsarge permit, my tentative plan is to spend a few days hike/camping over Avalanche and Colby Passes, camp on the Bighorn Plateau (which I've wanted to do for a long time), and then go over Forester Pass and back out over Kearsarge. Other than the Onion Valley trail and the JMT segment, this would be new territory for me. Thanks.

I survived
2
Hi to all my friends, and to everyone that doesn't know me. I really miss you all, and the fun we have sharing. I'm going to be able to backpack again, starting next spring. You that know me, probably remember my moto. Don't carry anything that you don't need or use everyday, other than, rainwear, first-aid, repair, or emergency communication. Especially, don't carry food that you can't stomach at altitude. Don't carry around 3 pounds of warm water. 20 ounces is more than enough almost every where in the Sierra. Most importantly, You could die if you don't know what you are doing. It's best to not ,cross that raging creek, keep pushing into a thunder and lighting storm, cross that snow field, ignore altitude sickness, as a few examples. Just turn around, be humble, rather than dead, and come back another time.

Do you bling out your #gear ?

#gear
I've never personalized much of my gear, although I remember when adding patches to the bags of external-frame packs was common. But when I bought a bear canister, I added reflective tape… and then stickers! Anyone else have photos to share? -- Richard

For those of you trying to get rid of old camping gear you can find a lot of places just by doing a search. I found a number of places using "where to donate used camping gear." Kim

Major bridge outage reported on Facebook
111
#Conditions
Facebook has what sounds like a reliable report that the bridge crossing of the South Fork San Joaquin -- the one that spans the Fork where it carries the combined melt from Evolution Basin and Goddard Canyon -- is out according to a USFS helicopter survey. I am trying to confirm that with the USFS. That is a huge watershed and it is hard to picture crossing that waterflow in a year like this. John Ladd JohnLadd@... 415-648-9279 (landline)

Wild weather?
8
Arrgh. Reading these posts is freaking me out. I canceled my backcountry trip and reserved two weeks of car camping and day hiking, starting 8/25, between Lundy and Big Pine (7 different locations). That's still nine days away. What is going on that is bringing on such dire and long lasting predictions? I know the pictures I have seen from the backcountry lately have had a lot of heavy clouds. Here in the high desert near Victorville we are having monsoon season with lots of clouds and wind and some rain. Not unusual for August here. We had nine serious rainstorms in monsoon season August 2022. Our day hike mileage range is not great, so I don't expect to get up to 10K more than a few times. Am I in for a miserable trip? What's up? Marion Davison

Big Pine Road
5
One of our camping and day hiking destinations is Big Pine Creek. We have a camping reservation for our smallish (22') RV. We have never driven up there. We have learned to avoid Onion Valley and Horseshoe Meadow roads because coming down can be very hazardous to brakes. How steep is the road to Big Pine Creek? Am I likely to experience brake problems descending back to Big Pine? Marion Davison

Need advice on hiking this weekend
14
Hi all I’m supposed to start a section hike from Cottonwood pass to Kearsarge pass starting this Saturday. Talked to the front office at Lone pine wilderness center. This is the weather update they have. Sat 30% chance of snow. Thunderstorm after 5pm Sun before 10am, rain and snow , rain andSnow 10am - noon. 10k Mon showers and thunder storms 42F Tue rain and snow thunder sunny 42F Heavy weather for two weeks. Stay away from large clear areas and trees. The lady at the front office says the advice of the forest service is to stay away from the mountains the next two weeks. Should I consider going? Or cancel the hike? — Anand

Tuolumne Meadows Lodge (HSC) - Will it Open for 2023 Season
16
Greetings, Just had permit application approved last week for partial high sierra camp loop hike for Sept. 5th. We've been hiking in high sierra camp loop last couple years, but unfortunately the Tuolumne Meadows Lodge (HSC) has not been opened. Last time we stayed there was in 2018 and we loved it, before and after our hike. Has anyone heard yet if Tuolumne Meadows Lodge (HSC) will open for the 2023 season or not ? Also, the Tuolumne backpacker's campground was closed last year for "reconditioning" ... has anyone heard if it will re-open for 2023 season ? thanks regards Bill V.

Anyone have a recent report for trail conditions, Kearsarge Pass to Whitney Portal? My two daughters and I are hiking that route 8/13 to 8/17. Remaining snow packs? stream crossings? mosquitos out yet? Thx!
