FREE Coleman Peak1 Apex backpacking stove
Coleman made a foray into the white gas backpacking stoves in the 90's. I read a very positive review and bought one. Really, I wasn't disappointed. Broad solid base, wide flame, stable pot stand, widely variable flame. What you would expect from Coleman. The emphasis is on functionality, not state-of-the-art tech. I took it on one trip and just didn't get comfortable with the fuel delivery system, which appears to me to be identical to the MSR Whisperlite system. If I'd seen the current crop of youtube videos on the Coleman stove, I might have been more patient with it. Anyway, almost new, free to you. I just ask you to pay shipping. photo attached

FREE NEW* Asolo boots
2
FREE! NEW (unused) The best boots I’ve ever owned. I have a pair of Asolo Ridge boots, the second pair of them I’ve owned. They are all-but new. I bought them on eBay from a man who tried them out in his local park and didn’t like the fit. Other than trying them on in the house, I never took them outside. The first pair of these I owned took me down the JMT and on numerous week-long Sierra trips. I found them perfect for the x-country jaunts I loved. They provide a firm foundation for talus, snowfields, and other uncertain footing. I felt confident that I wouldn’t sprain an ankle miles from the nearest trail. I even had them resoled once. When I saw another identical pair on eBay, I bought them. But I never really wore out the first pair, so I never used the second pair. They are size 11.5. Original MSRP was $280. The soles are solid lugged Vibram. (The only caveat I have is that some soles eventually tend to separate these days. I never had that problem with my first pair, and the soles on this pair appear to be solidly bonded. I had both of a pair of Merrells delam within 200 yds. Must have been their time.) Should that happen, they could be re-glued by one of a number of companies who do that. Photos attached. I only ask that you pay shipping for them. Pete

Free Optimus Svea stove(s) + Sigg Tourist Cook Set
11
I haven't posted any messages like this. Hope I'm doing it correctly. Please comment if something is amiss. --------- Free Optimus Svea stove(s) + Sigg Tourist Cook Set I’m clearing out my gear bins as my backpacking days draw to a close. I’m just hoping to place things with someone who can and will put them to good use. You only pay shipping charges. Optimus still sells the Svea 123, much to my amazement. A new one on Amazon is ~$135. Yikes! This includes two (2) Optimus Svea 123 stoves. One is well-used and loved. The other is a gift from a friend years ago that hasn’t seen the trail but I might have started it up in the backyard. Use the new one and save the old one for a spare or parts. I used this stove on 2 JMT thru-hikes, 1 Tahoe-Yosemite thru-hike, and many hikes in between and thereafter. Yes, it’s heavier than the current ultralights. But you’ll find it to be ‘bombproof’ and totally trustworthy. Caveat: These stoves have been stored in the garage for many years. I'm assuming that hasn't affected them. Do you dread warming a half-full gas container between your legs in your sleeping bag on a frigid morning (or at high elevation)? Not a problem with the Svea. It uses white gas that you pressurize as appropriate for conditions. A pump is included to make starting easier. A special fuel refill cap is required to accommodate the pump, which the old stove has. If you need a fuel bottle, I have one to throw in. The Sigg Tourist cook set is really nifty. It has a base, a windscreen, 2 pots and lid, and a pot grabber. It all nests compactly. I replaced the large pot and lid with a stainless steel one somewhere along the way. The other pieces are aluminum. See photos attached. First to holler gets the lot. I won’t “part it out”. You’ll find any number of reviews and “odes to my Svea” postings online. photos attached Pete Klein

Update re upcoming trip
9
Hello everyone. Just an update. I received a cancellation notice from Recreation.gov for my campsite reservation at Onion Valley. Apparently there is flooding. My JMT permit has not been canceled yet. My reservation was for Aug 2 with the plan to enter the JMT on Aug 3. What I don’t know is whether the trailhead or the road to OV is also closed. Obviously this throws the logistics of the trip into question but we will work it out. I have an inquiry to Recreation.gov about access to the trailhead. I also was able to pick up a permit reversing our trek out of Horseshoe Meadow and ending at Onion Valley. I will drop the unused permit as soon as I know what direction I am going.

Kearsarge Pass Permits available

Just release 4 permits for Kearsarge Pass for August 3. FYI On Fri, Jul 21, 2023 at 11:07 AM Jeff Hubatka <jhubatka@...> wrote: Re: Onion Valley campground I was up there two weeks ago, hiked to Robinson Lake so I walked through the campground. The paved road still had water flowing over the top, lots of trees and branches are down and the dirt road to the campsites is extremely rutted from water runoff. Overnight near the TM Wilderness Center
8
Hi, first time JMTer here. I plan on picking up my Cathedral Lakes Aug 29 permit from the Tuolumne Meadows Wilderness Center. If I pick up the permit the day before (Aug 28), can I stay that night somewhere in the TM area, knowing that the TM campground is closed? I'm willing to camp a couple of miles away from the center and TM area, but I just don't know whether I'm allowed to with my permit. Or whether I have to overnight in Yosemite Valley or Lee Vining on the 28th before I start on the CL trailhead on the 29th. Thanks, Wu

No shows/Reservation Cancellations
21
There's an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal about the problem of no shows for camping reservations. The article deals with car campgrounds but the same problem exists for wilderness permits. The existence of nonrefundable reservations and/or high cancellation fees as a percentage of the reservation fee creates a disincentive for people to free up reservations that they do not intend to use. The relatively low cost of outdoor recreation results in people reserving a number of dates, only some of which they intend to use. As I look at the Inyo reservation calendar even into September, I find it hard to believe that the wilderness is going to be jam packed to the capacity of permits after Labor Day. I don't know what the solution is but eliminating all fees to cancel and refunding the full reservation amount might be something Inyo should try out. I used a "gift" link for the article so hopefully non-subscribers can read it as well: https://www.wsj.com/articles/campground-reservations-sold-out-empty-ecf012a9?st=r8ge7j0gdb977nt&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

Looking for a JMT mentor
I am a beginner hiker in reasonable shape. Recently completed some reasonably chalk day hikes in Alaska (Bison Gulch, Harding Icefield, Mt. Juneau Ridge) with a moderately loaded backpack for training. Want to start with a JMT segment and looking for an experienced mentor to train and prepare.

Shuttle down to Reds Mdw, DP
18
#Transportation
Just tried to reserve shuttle tkts from Mammoth Mtn Inn down to Devils Postpile/Red's Mdw for mid August. No go at the moment. Right now the road is being worked on so they're playing it by ear. I can see that, rn at the end of May. I was calling about Aug though. Sounds like the script they give the phone answerers implies they dk if it will open at all this Summer. Couldn't quite figure out if they were referring to the shuttle being avail (or no) or the road being physically closed (at what point along the road) or no. Anyone have any insight to this? Or know what entity makes the (1) road and (2) shuttle decisions? Planning to hike NOBO from TH AA10 to Happy Isles - August - but sort of need to get down there..... Shuttle or pvt pty, don't care of course. Guess it's the road situation itself we'll be most concerned with... tyia

Woods Creek bridge repaired
The PCTA is reporting that the damaged Woods Creek bridge has been repaired. https://www.pcta.org/discover-the-trail/closures/central-california/woods-creek-bridge-damaged/ The PCTA also updated the South Fork San Joaquin River Bridge closure page in June 22. The "local" permits paragraph has changed. No mention of reentry trail camping restrictions. Basically just says "The continuous wilderness travel requirement will not be enforced for those that have a break in continuous wilderness travel for the purpose of travelling the reroute." No mention of resupply being allowed in Bishop. They quote the section on Inyo's website about continuous travel, "If you have a break in continuous wilderness travel, a new permit would be required from the agency where the next section of your trip begins." They don't quote the second sentence of the paragraph, "The Inyo National Forest will make an exception for JMT hikers to exit for a reasonable period of time necessary for resupply." https://www.pcta.org/discover-the-trail/closures/central-california/south-fork-san-joaquin-river-bridge-damaged/ Frank -- Frank

July 4th week - Where is everyone going?
2
With July 4th coming up, I was wondering what everyone was planning on doing in the Sierras? With the huge snowfall, I've found a lot of my Sierra wish list is not going to be possible till late August or September. Any good backpacking opportunities at lower elevation?

VVR to Whitney Portal
6
I had a plan to hike from VVR to Whitney Portal in early July this year (as a continuation from starting at Yosemite Valley and ending at VVR last year). I'm now wondering if it might be possible in late August / early September. I have a few key questions in my head, and am sharing these in case any folks might have some knowledge than I do. Is the road from Fresno to VVR ok? Is it likely the Woods Creek bridge will get repaired this Summer? Will there still be a risk of forest fires in late Summer/early Fall despite the heavy snow? Thanks for all the help, Geraldine.

snow in the past
Of the following pictures the first 3 were taken a couple days before July 4th 1983. I was on Kibbie Ridge on the northwest border of Yosemite at an elevation of 7000 ft. Snow in the trees was about 3 feet deep. All the areas without snow had small creeks running through them. The Fourth picture was taken in 1996 at the end of August on the eastern side of Mt Lassen at 8000 ft, another bad snow year. If you've ever driven through Mt Lassen you've seen Lake Helen near the Mt Lassen Peak trailhead. It never thawed out that year. There was a guy nearby doing telemark skiing. The manager at the Sacramento REI wanted to hire me in 1996 but business was so bad that year since few people went backpacking due to the snow. In order for anyone to do much backpacking this year it needs to get hot, and stay that way to melt the snow. 1996 is the year Cheryl Strayed tried hiking the PCT and skipped over much of the Sierras like a lot of others did.
