Send bear canister to post office in Lone Pine.
#gear
Dieter Mossbrucker
We live in Germany, so some things are unknown to us. For our JMT-NoBo in August we would like to borrow a bear canister. Is it possible to mail a bear canister to the Post Offive in Lone Pine and then pick it up there in person just before JMT tour start?
Sunny greetings from Lake Constance, Dieter |

开云体育One note regarding Wild Ideas: make sure to reserve it soon. They often run out of rentable canisters months in advance. Amazing canisters, by the way. We’ve owned two for over ten years and they still look almost like new after 200+ nights in the backcountry. ? ? ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Peter Hirst

Bearikades are great investments, and I mean that literally. They seem indestructible and used canisters often sell for just a small discount to new, especially if Wild Ideas doesn’t have many in stock. My nine year old Bearikade has appreciated over the years since new canisters keep going up in price. Can’t say that for any of my other old pieces of gear! ?You could buy gold to deal with inflation, but Bearikades might be better.

开云体育Hi Dieter,?we just bought our bear canisters in a sale at REI for a 20% discount.? Regarding the fact it might not be the last hike in the Sierra for you, get one e.g. the bear vault 500 for around 50-60 US dollars Regards Chris

Hi Chris,
?
it is all a bit more complicated if you live somewhere else.
?
I bought my BV500 online from REI during Independence Day sale 2019, for pickup in a LA store when I was there (late July). The confirmation e-mail told me that I have to pick it up within 2 weeks. So I asked back if they can hold it for me until the planned date (less than 4 weeks after the sale), and it was confirmed. But they did not. When I arrived at the store I was told the 2 weeks were over. I had a printout of the e-mail with me, and lucklily there were still 2 BV500 sitting on the shelf. During checkout they first charged me the full price,?I got the sales price (60$) only after complaining.
?
BTW the BV500 is now 88$ + tax, so even at -20% it may be a bit more then 60$.
?
As there is no market for bear cans in Europe it may not be good for an investment nevertheless? ;) - but I hope I can use it again this year.
?
Regards? Henning (also from Germany)

开云体育You can mail ?it to the Mt. Williamson Motel and BaseCamp and we will hold it and/or your food for a fee and you won't be hindered by Postoffice hours.?www.mtwilliamsonmotel.com Lauralyn On Feb 11, 2022, at 12:06 PM, Ian Goldsmith <ian@...> wrote:

In the US, you can send something to yourself or anybody as follows: [your name] c/o General Delivery [Post Office, ST ZIP] In your case, the address would be: Dieter Mossbrucker c/o General Delivery Lone Pine, CA 93545 The post office will hold it for up to 30 days for you to pick it up.? It helps the post office if you can mark the package with the date you expect to pick it up. Steve |
开云体育Thank you Lauralyn for supporting us. As far as Bear canisters go, I own both the Bear Vault and the Bearikade. I haven't used my BV for a while because:
The Garcia Backpacker Cache has the same small mouth issue as the
Bear Vault. I have never used one so my review is worthless. They
used to rent them at the Yosemite Wilderness centers. But the Bear Vault and the Garcia Cache are much cheaper than the
Bearikade. The Bearikade however is tough, light and easily to
open, as long as you have a Quarter ($0.25) handy ;-) Actually, I
carry a steel washer with me when I hike to open it with, and as a
screwdriver prying tool. The opening is the same as the storage
area so digging around your "stuff" is easier. If someone tries to sell you a Ursack for the JMT...soft
"Bear-proof"? bags are not allowed in the Parks in the Sierras
(unless they changed that lately). Besides who wants to eat food
that has been abused by a bear...think crunched, trampled and
crumbled. If you can afford it would go with the Bearikade. I live in Sacramento, so the Sierras are my backyard...the Bearikade gets plenty of use. Disclaimer: I do not work for Wild Ideas...I am just wild about
their ideas ;-) --Rick

Re general delivery, my personal experience is that the availability of this service is not guaranteed and varies by post office. I have had general deliveries refused and returned by small offices since they “don’t have room” for the storage, and even if they are willing to accept the package, they may not be willing or able to hold it for a full 30 days. Bottom line: every post office if different and you should verify general service delivery service or risk an ugly surprise.
