You could try the Mammoth Pass Cutoff trail, at Upper Crater Meadow. This takes you to the Twin Lakes trailhead and a free shuttle into Mammoth Lakes. Mike Sherman

Came over Forester Pass NOBO on the 18th. No snow on either side except for the ever-present snow field on the North side. Easily walked over or detoured around.
