Re: Inyo Permits

That is because from Feb 28 to March 1, there are several days: 29, 30, 31. One advantage of the end of Feb.

I know there can be some late winter and early spring addition, but with virtually no snow added in January and February it would appear at best it will be a below average snowpack year.? For those that have hiked in low, normal and high snow years, what's your guess on the date for the end of "mosquito season".

I know in 2017 and 19, extremely high snow years, mosquitos were still an issue in mid August and a bit later on most of the trail.? 2020 in late August they weren't much of a problem when I was in the western part of SEKI.

Re: Inyo Permits

Some info for anyone trying to figure out Inyo NF¡¯s release timing, I think 8/29-31 permits were released at midnight; I grabbed mine then. (Whether this year¡¯s fire season will allow me to actually use them is an entirely different matter...)

Re: Camping at Trailhead

The walkup procedure is different for Yosemite this year. Read details here.?

Re: Camping at Trailhead

The park service is planning on having the Tuolumne Meadows Hiker's shuttle operational this year.? Thus, you could stay overnight at the backpacker's campground in Yosemite Valley, and take the morning hiker's shuttle to TM and arrive there with enough time to easily make it a good chunk of the way down Lyell Canyon instead of waiting for the YARTS buses in the afternoon.

One additional option is to see if you can get a walk up permit the day before your permitted hike. ?Its a bit different now so check regulations. I have done that from the valley and from Tuolumne meadows. ?From Tuolumne four miles gets you to dispersed camping in Lyle canyon. ?The hike from the valley to Tuolumne is far and a big climb, so probably not your best option unless you are a strong hiker. ?

Thanks, that is my best option, as I don't want to be going back and forth on public transport.

It is good to know the back-up option, thanks all.

Thanks, I'll look into a motel at Lee Vining.

Re: Camping at Trailhead

As someone suggested, stay at a motel in Lee Vining.? The early morning Yarts bus gets you to TM around 8:30.? That's plenty early to get you to the campground just before Donahue.

I haven't stayed at the backpacker's camp in the Valley, but in Tuolumne you didn't get a specific campsite so it didn't fill up. Since you will have your wilderness permit you should be able to camp there.

I could potentially stay in the backpackers campsite (but no guarantee of a place) and get the first YART out of the valley. There is very limited accommodation in the valley. I tried Curry Village but it is booked out.

Ideally, I'd like to be close to the trailhead to get an early start.

Re: Camping at Trailhead

Thanks Jeff, is there always space there or could I arrive at the backpackers camp and not get a camping spot because it's full?

I still don't really fully understand. If?you arrive one day later you save one day of vacation before the trip, which you can use extra at the end of the trip.
?
But if there one is allowed to use the backpackers camp for one night the problem is solved.

I can only get 3 weeks off work, and that needs to include travel time, and I want to enjoy the trip with two layover days.

You could also stay in a Lee Vining Hotel and arrange a private early drop off.?
