Re: Resupply and rest day in Independence at Mt. Williamson Motel
#Resupply
I think the answer is that this is allowed, but? your best source of information on this will be the fine folks at the Mt Williamson Motel.? They have been dealing with this for a few years now and can tell you from their first-hand experience.? It is their business, and they do it? very well.
I would not even rely on any answer you get from Inyo National Forest.? And I say that with all due respect for the fine work Inyo does in many other respects.? Making their regulations and policies clear on questions like this is not their strong suit.? For years Inyo had a very clear position of allowing a 24-hour? departure from the trail, and return by the same departure point.? Then a couple of years ago, they muddied the waters by rescinding that permission, then modifying it a couple of times, eventually saying that they would allow time "reasonably necessary" for resupply.? There have been varying interpretations of what amount of time is "reasonably necessary" at any given resupply point.? You can look at the Inyo National Forest web site for whatever their latest is on the subject, but ultimately, I would rely only on Mt Willamson tells ypou their actual experience has been. |
Resupply and rest day in Independence at Mt. Williamson Motel

Dieter Mossbrucker
Hello.
We are planning a JMT NoBo in August starting at Horseshoe Meadows - Cottonwood Lakes TH. For the first resupply, we would like to descend from the JMT over Kearsage Pass into Onion Vallesy, spend the night at the Mt. Williamson Motel, and return the next day over Kearsage Pass back on the JMT. But to do that we would have to leave the JMT for one night. Question: Is this allowed? Or do I need an extra permit for the Onion Valley TH? Best regards from Lake Constance (Bodensee/Germany) |

Re: Yosemite permits on recreation.gov
Looks like with the exclusion of GP, Sunrise and HI->LYV permits from "Donohue eligibility", the compromise was to open the full daily quota of HI->past LYV to JMT hikers.
I appreciate this probably isn't your permit preference, but worth noting that the Yosemite Permit Quota page indicates that they have increased the HI->LYV daily quota from 30 to 45, and the HI->Illilouette daily quota from 5 to 30, presumably to compensate for the reduced permit availability at other trailheads in 2022 (and beyond?). Hopefully they will eventually reinstate some of the "non-Donohue" HI->past LYV quota... |
Re: Yosemite permits on recreation.gov
Put in my first Yosemite lottery application today for the July 4th week. (not for the JMT, some in-park hikes)
I noticed they only have "Happy Isle>Past LYV (Donahue Pass eligible)" as well as "Happy Isles to LYV". That's a little concerning that the JMT permits for Happy Isles are part of the same pool of permits that people wanting to camp around the Half Dome junction or down towards Merced Lake. I know that they say the Donahue Pass exit permits are the same number, but now people not doing the JMT will likely find getting the LYV pass through permits harder to get. Not the end of the world, but might affect future hikes for me. Not too fond of the $10 lottery fee that is non refundable even if you don't get a permit either. |

Re: Starting JMT at Bubb's Creek TH?
Yes! good idea. I was a fire lookout in SEKI in 1993, did an 11 day trip on the High Sierra Trail in 2000, spent a few days in 2012 in Cedar Grove (and hiked Bubb's Creek) and then spent a week in 2019 at Muir Trail Ranch. That's all left me only wanting more. Next summer is the time.?

开云体育?Here are my thoughts on fires. ?I dislike bugs and lightning more than smoke. I often backpack in late Aug early September. Smoke has been a problem >50% of the time and a major problem 25% of the time.? When in smoke I sleep as high as possible. The smoke usually falls into the valleys at night giving me clean air to sleep in. ?I try and pass through valleys in AM for the same reasons. It’s a disappointing reality, particularly for those of us that travel and are on fixed schedules. I have shifted some of my adventures to The PNW and AZ with limited success. ?We had significant smoke in the Grand Canyon this Sept. So my advice is go when you want to go. ?Monitor conditions and adjust if you need to. ?Be flexible. As many have said short notice permits are pretty easy to obtain. ?One or two smoke free section hikes may be a better option than a smoked filled thruhike. The rangers are an excellent resource. The bigger the snowpack the longer the skeeters will be around. August is usually fine. The fires are just a wild card. Get your permit for when you’d lime to go and cross your fingers. A few years back I got a pct permit from Tahoe to Whitney. About 430 miles. Then the fires started. I was able to jump on at Florence lake for the last 130 or so. The most spectacular section IMHO so turned out great tho I had hoped to be in better shape from the long hike before I had to do the big passes. Good times.?

开云体育The smoke in August came mostly from fires to the north and west of the trail.? We live in June Lake in the summer and there was little smoke in the area until mid September when we started to get smoke from the SEKI fires. When the Inyo closed in September it was actually due to a ?personal shortage due to the fires up by Tahoe and not to fires in the Inyo. ? Sent from for Windows ? From: Curt Kinchen

开云体育Sorry to hear about your trip last year.? We started south from Rush Creek on 8/16 last year (we did the north portion of the trail from Rush Creek to Happy Isle in the rain the week before) and had beautiful weather with little or no smoke or rain the entire way south.? Only complication was when they closed the Inyo on September 1,? we had to walk south from Evolution not knowing if we would be permitted to finish.? Initially after the closure, the Forest Service said if you were on the trail you could finish as long as you didn’t leave the trail (i.e. no resupply).? We actually met someone that had run in to a ranger on Kearsarge Pass after resupplying at Onion Valley.? The ranger almost made her turn back but she was finally permitted to get back on trail. ?In 2020, we scored a Donahue exit permit starting at Glacier but we forced off the trail at Duck Pass due to the Creek Fire.? Despite the fire risk, I still prefer the latter part of August and September for a start date. ? Sent from for Windows ? From: Curt Kinchen
