Re: GoreTex question

Do you need a breathable jacket for sitting on a boat? I would just use a completely?waterproof Helly Hansen. If you're not hiking or paddling, you won't be sweating.

Re: GoreTex question

The one thing to keep in mind is that all breathable waterproof fabrics (no matter how much you pay for a jacket) loose their effectiveness with time and need to be refreshed on a yearly or every couple of years depending on how often the jacket is used. To refresh you need to wash the jacket to open up the pores of the breathable membrane and then apply a DWR finish which is what enables the material of the jacket to actually shed water. ?There are multiple products available, but I have had good luck with the Nikwax brand of products and the following link is to a review I did on actually using the products:?

While I have a number of Gore-Tex jackets Frog Togs are also my choice for the Sierra¡¯s.

Don¡¯t count on old gor tex to be repellent it degrades pretty quick. ?I just finished 10 days in a 6yo simms top of the line guide ?jacket it was shot. ?Seams leaked about neck.
My advice is buy quality jacket on sale. ? ??

Hi, we just went through this.. cruise to Alaska early May. We took both older heaver jacket and frog togs. Heavy jacket for on the boat out on the decks where it's windy/colder (and in this case snowing), and togs jacket when hiking around town (fits in small backpack).

My wife's older gore-tex jacked no longer beaded up, but rather water was absorbed into the first layer of the jacket. So before the trip I used Atsko? Water-Guard Extreme to redo the DWR. It's very easy to apply and one I've used before. Wash the jacket gently, spray on... no smell/stains,, slightly darkened the color. Now the jacket beads water again.

There are other DWR coatings available, I just had familiarity with this one.

Have a fun trip.

Interview about the survey and the related new website #HikeTheSierraNevadaBlog #JMTsurvey

A slightly edited video of my live interview about the survey and the new related blog site is available now at this link.?

I haven't seen it yet, but I assume the copying went fine. The interview by Ben Spillman took about an hour. Ben told me to be spontaneous and we didn't rehearse the questions in any detail, it seemed to have worked. I answered questions for about another hour.?

For comfort, I found that the Big Agnes (BA) Q-Core mattress to be very comfortable. I have to fight my dogs for rights when going to bed. :-)

The quick-fill system allows me to have it inflated under a minute. A few extra puffs for firmness. It is quite durable as I have let others try it on the bare ground without much clearing. Just be sure to deflate during the day if taking a 0. I forgot and the mattress developed a small hole I could not find. Called BA during the COVID thing and they replaced for free. Just had to follow the orders about cutting out the valve and sending a picture. Fantastic company BA is.

Re: zPacks Altaplex on JMT? #gear

I have the Copper Spur and have been very happy with it. I even tried setting up by starting with the fly and then put the tent up while under the fly. Definitely different action.

There is also the version, which I have, has lights in the seams. Does add some weight, but it was for general giggles and enjoyment. It does get ones attention at night.

Furthermore, since I hike with my two canine partners, they usually join me in the tent. There is an out-vestibule that is essentially a rain fly with an extension. Quite nice. Just have not played with it enough to be comfortable on the trail yet.

I am a journeyman backpacker;??I have stopped worrying about weight and optimize for comfort now. Found a really good way to carry the excess few lbs instead (Aarn body packs).

Copper Spur is a very good tent. Congratulations.

So I decided to sell the Altaplex. I found a coupon code for CampSaver and ordered the Copper Spur UL1. Not crazy about the added ~20 ounces but there are some upsides -- freestanding setup, smaller amount of real estate needed to pitch, ability to sleep without the rainfly on clear nights and have insect protection while being able to stargaze, etc.

I tend to carry more water than necessary on the JMT. By carrying less water, I can offset the weight penalty. At least that is the plan! As much as people focus on base weight, it's total pack weight that counts and there's efficiencies to be gained there. Never a real need for >1L of water carried on the JMT, imo.

Re: zPacks Altaplex on JMT? #gear

I've done bivy and tent on the JMT.? ?Going back to bivy this year.? I just prefer the simplicity and small size needed.? I would cowboy camp if it weren't for the mosquitos.? And as far as water, there really isn't a need to carry any water most of the time.? ?You can just camel up when you stop.? Maybe the last stream before heading over a pass and the burnout area around Red's.

Oh, and there are more like it at the photographer's Flickr photostream.

This seems to be the final photo in the sequence (or maybe first? don't know which way Flickr organizes photostreams):

There are four El Cap/moonlit Horsetail Falls photos, and one of Lower Yosemite Falls with a moonbow at the base of the falls.

Re: Walk in permits #permits

True walk ups should at least be available for no-show permit pickups on the day of the hike.? Hopefully they will see the sense of this.? It would be very similar to the old walkups, although substantially fewer.
