Re: Send bear canister to post office in Lone Pine. #gear

In the US, you can send something to yourself or anybody as follows:

[your name]
c/o General Delivery
[Post Office, ST ZIP]

In your case, the address would be:

Dieter Mossbrucker
c/o General Delivery
Lone Pine, CA 93545

The post office will hold it for up to 30 days for you to pick it up.? It helps the post office if you can mark the package with the date you expect to pick it up.

Steve

Re: Send bear canister to post office in Lone Pine. #gear

Hi Chris,
?
it is all a bit more complicated if you live somewhere else.
?
I bought my BV500 online from REI during Independence Day sale 2019, for pickup in a LA store when I was there (late July). The confirmation e-mail told me that I have to pick it up within 2 weeks. So I asked back if they can hold it for me until the planned date (less than 4 weeks after the sale), and it was confirmed. But they did not. When I arrived at the store I was told the 2 weeks were over. I had a printout of the e-mail with me, and lucklily there were still 2 BV500 sitting on the shelf. During checkout they first charged me the full price,?I got the sales price (60$) only after complaining.
?
BTW the BV500 is now 88$ + tax, so even at -20% it may be a bit more then 60$.
?
As there is no market for bear cans in Europe it may not be good for an investment nevertheless? ;) - but I hope I can use it again this year.
?
Regards? Henning (also from Germany)

Hi Dieter,?
?
we just bought our bear canisters in a sale at REI for a 20% discount.?
Regarding the fact it might not be the last hike in the Sierra for you, get one e.g. the bear vault 500 for around 50-60 US dollars

Amazing canisters, by the way. We’ve owned two for over ten years and they still look almost like new after 200+ nights in the backcountry.

Re: Send bear canister to post office in Lone Pine. #gear

Bearikades are great investments, and I mean that literally. They seem indestructible and used canisters often sell for just a small discount to new, especially if Wild Ideas doesn’t have many in stock. My nine year old Bearikade has appreciated over the years since new canisters keep going up in price. Can’t say that for any of my other old pieces of gear! ?You could buy gold to deal with inflation, but Bearikades might be better.

This is really good news! We really want to rent canisters from wild ideas. Hopefully I can pre-book these canisters from Germany.

We live in Germany, so some things are unknown to us. For our JMT-NoBo in August we would like to borrow a bear canister. Is it possible to mail a bear canister to the Post Offive in Lone Pine and then pick it up there in person just before JMT tour start?
Sunny greetings from Lake Constance, Dieter
