no user profile opening on student's computer

I’ve run into a problem I can’t seem to solve. In the middle of a session, the student’s mic stopped responding at all. When I check the system tray, the icon says “no user profile open,” or words to that effect. There’s only one Dragon profile on the system, and it is of course set to load when Dragon does. I opened the profile, then when that didn’t work, restarted the computer. We still had no open user profile. What, short of calling Nuance support, should I do next?
