Re: installing applications

- I¡¯m impressed!
- I have never been able to get HamClock to run on any Windows based computer
- I¡¯ve even ¡®attempted¡¯ to learn Linux, and install that on Windows, but it never has worked!
- I¡¯ve given up, under the category of ¡°Time Is Money¡±, and I do not know Linux.

It works ¡®Great¡¯ on a dedicated RasberryPi device, where it is pre-loaded ¡.. And I love HamClock & use it on a dedicated Monitor in my Radio Room. ?Love it! ?But, I previously spent days following various YouTube or Written instructions, all of which was a waste of my time. ?

I¡¯m proud of you! ?But, I don¡¯t want to put another minute into attempting to determine how to place it on Windows, unless/until they create a ¡®Loadable¡¯ Windows based program version. ?

Good Luck! ?And, ¡®73¡¯s¡¯

Re: downloading and installing HamPC on Win11 laptop

Hi Lew.
I haven't tried flashing HamPC recently, but I did have some problems with USB sticks a year or two ago. They would attempt the write but fail to verify or might even fail during the write. In that case I recovered the USB sticks by going back to Windows and using the format function to reformat the drive. But in my case I was NOT using "quick format", I was using the long format that wrote every sector on the stick. That usually solved my problem but I had at least one USB stick that I had to delete the old partitions and create new partitions before it would heal itself. I expect the HamPC image needs to write a Linux boot partition on the drive so Windows may have trouble reading if it doesn't work.
?
I've also had trouble when I didn't have enough free space on the drive for the software to expand the image to full size. I don't believe Balena Etcher has that problem but I did have trouble with the older HamPC images when I didn't follow Dave's written directions from the web page for how to expand the image before writing the USB stick. I think Dave solved that problem since then.

Re: downloading and installing HamPC on Win11 laptop

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I finally got a good download of the file. When I got bad downloads, the download indicator in the firefox browser simply said "failed".

Once I got a good download, I tried using balena etcher to flash a 128GB USB flash drive. Balena would go through the flash process and validation only to fail. The flash drive was then unreadable and unusable. I tried it with a second 128GB flash drive and was unsuccessful with it as well.

Not sure what to do next.

Once you have a successful download, use BalenaEtcher to flash to a 64GB or larger USB flash drive and boot off of that...

Re: Flash/Install issues

Hi again

Now as I am testing HamPC more, I found to my pleasure that Icom 7300 just works directly over USB, both virtual serial and audio.

I also found, not to my pleasure, a few things - can other comment on them?

1. With the method in #395 above, the command?? cat /etc/os-release shows? Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS, not Xubuntu 21 or 22 as expected. Why?

2. While wsjtx worked beatufully, flrig and fldigi did not work, with fldigi not even displaying, I rebuild the fl-suite using Dave's ham_radio_scripts on Github and getPython3.
Then both program started, and flrig worked right away after configuration.
Fldigi opened and could be configured including the rig file, but could not CAT communicate with the 7300 but audio ok. Also its window top and window handling were not working properly (stayed up and could not be lowered or moved generally).

I thought efter rebuilding the fl-suite, that perhaps I should upgrade from xubuntu 21 (from the HamPC install file) to xubuntu 22?
But that does not seem a case to consider?

So any help on xubuntu version and fldigi would be appreciated.

Re: Flash/Install issues

Hi all
After several attempts, I managed to do an install of HamPC to my Acer Aspire V5 hard disk. which is a performance boost.?
Problem here was to get the HamPC xubuntu OS to boot after install. (It uses EFI)

I did this and can now run HamPC from hard disk:
1. Prepare a hampc install:
- Download?HamPC_v3.0.1b1.img.xz from sourceforge.net
- Check its correctness using?HamPC_v3.0.1b1.img.xz.sha512sum in the Linux file browser (Properties - Digest)
? I had to download 3 times to get it error free.
- Put that ...img.xz file on a flash drive for later use.
2. Make PC hard disk bootable with xubuntu efi:
- download xubuntu-22.04.4-desktop-amd64.iso
- check the sha256 hash against?SHA256SUMS in file browser (Linux - Digests)
- burn the ISO to a USB flash memory 64 Gb or more - I used BalenaEtcher on Linux
- boot the flash mem and install Xubuntu (this made my disk bootable I think, then that xubuntu not needed any more)
3. Now we shall get HamPC with its partitions onto the hard disk
- Reboot into an ubuntu or xubuntu (install) flash memory but this time Try (x)ubuntu
- With "Try" ubuntu running in memory, insert the HamPC flash memory in USB port
- In file browser, find HamPC flash mem and right click the HamPC.....img.xz file, select Disk Image Writer
- Select Restore to the PC hard disk, often /dev/sda
? ?If it refuses, check in program Disks that no hard disk partition is not mounted (e.g swap), then unmount it and try again
? ?This will create a 500 MB fat EFI partition and a 31 GB ext4 partition (that can be vastly expanded later) on the hard disk.
4. Reboot but stop reboot going into BIOS (F2 on my Acer) - Boot - change Legacy boot to EFI if needed- save&exit F10
? ? Hopefully you will now boot into HamPC and log in with hampc.
5. If you install Gparted (sudo apt install Gparted), you can look at the partitions,
? ? and expand the sda2 partition with HamPC programs a lot.

Hi I have a windows tablet, with WSJTX etc installed all ready, just wondering what benifits there are to loading the HAMPC image, is it faster, more secure, less prone to crashing etc

Re: GridTracker not included

Hi Dave,

No need to apologize.

The solution can be found here:?

It was necessary for me to add their repo.

Re: GridTracker not included

I'm sorry but to my knowledge you can't use that method to update GridTracker. It's because GridTracker doesn't exist in the Debian repositories.

I'm additionally sorry that you cannot easily update GridTracker from within HamPC but that's due to the fact that there has not to my knowledge been a stable download location for the software. They keep changing it.

I would refer you to the GridTracker documentation for upgrade instructions.

GridTracker not included

Hi All,

I created a bootable USB of HamPC v3.0, downloaded from here?. I am able to boot from it on my laptop and even successfully run WSJTX. When I went to go fire up Gridtracker I noticed although listed in the list of Ham apps, it was not in /usr/bin. So I proceeded to install it from the instructions here?. It installed in /hampc/bin I believe (not at the machine right now) and not /usr/bin and I get a message "cannot locate gridtracker".

Couple of questions:
1) Why did this happen, am I missing install scripts?
2) Did I download from the wrong location?
3) I think I now the commands to get it onto the "Ham Radio" menu items, but how do I get it to be "located"?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
KD2WIR

Re: linux debian 11 bullseye

HAMPC is built on Xubuntu. Ubuntu is built on the Debian codebase so you can just manually install all the same applications and it should work just the same.

Re: linux debian 11 bullseye

I think this is meant to be used with the packaged Xubuntu distribution. But, you can download all the same application packages and use it just the same. Ubuntu is based on the Debian codebase.

Re: Linux Windows Subsystem in Windows 11

Hi Dave:

- Greatly enjoyed watching your YouTube video, with 1 exception, Namely:
- I was under the impression that "HamPC" was a bootable "Win" based program versus Linux
- My apologies for the misunderstanding.? Yet, I am new to Linux ........ As I suspect many are - And, 'struggle' to learn their OS commands/systems
- It appears that HamPC 'will' run on Win 10/11, but only through the WSL1/2 Subsystems.? And, I have found using that WSL subsystem to be very frustrating.? [And Example:? I can follow the instructions 'to the letter', only to discover that my password no longer 'works' even though I've entered it correctly, and its been accepted previoulsy - So, "I Don't Get It" - And, that a very basic issue item but many have reported it].?
- As an aside, that's been a topic of repeated inquires on other forums by many individuals attempting to use Linux through the WSL Subsystem.? All of my research indicated that I am not alone, and I (and others) have no solution.
- There's an old saying:? Time Is Money.? The time I (and others from my research on multiple forums) have spent on this task (i.e. WSL Subsystem) virtually eliminates the utility value of HamPC.? But, I 'Want It'!? LOL!
- "IF" a bootable Win 10/11 'Executable' program was created for HamPC, I would happily pay the money - And, I'd be the 1st to acquire it upon notification.??
- Nonetheless, I commend all of your efforts.? This post was not intended to criticize - Moreover, I complement you for what you have done.? Yet, I have spent days without success in using the WSL Subsystem.?

So, I would greatly enjoy being advised "IF" an actual Win 10/11 program could be acquired versus 'investing' my time towards any further pursits with Linux.

Thanks for reading.??

Re: RUFUS won't write to USB drive

I have been using balenaEtcher on both Win7 and Linux and it is my preferred option for creating USB ISO images. I did have problems with a few USB drives, some brand new, and fixed them by doing a full format on the drives, not a quick format. I don't know what was wrong, but the Windows format fixed the problem.
