You are in the grub shell.? So, you will need to use the grub commands to boot.? It should come with a list of selectable kernels to boot.? If not, something is screwed up with the boot record.

Herb,
I originally used rufus to burn the image to the USB drive as directed in the HOW_TO_BURN_IMAGE.TXT file at sourceforge. It took only a few minutes to complete so perhaps it did not correctly burn the image, but just created the partitions. I did not change any options in rufus, because they were greyed-out. Well, when I used Balena Etcher, it took an hour to burn the image, but now it boots just like yours, Herb.
Thanks
Gary W9TD

Hi Gary,

?

?????? Just finished.? I downloaded a fresh version from Sourceforge .? Took me about 2 minutes to download the following file:

?

?

Notice that this is my second time downloading the file as indicated by the number 1 in parentheses.

?

Then I used Balena Etcher to burn the image downloaded to a USB drive.? I used a 128 GB Sandisk Cruzer.? ?This took nearly an hour using a USB 3.0 USB drive on a highend machine.? Patience is a virtue.

?

?

Below is how Disk Manager shows the drive after having the image burned to it:

?

?

Based on this I am pretty sure that the image should fit onto a 32 GB USB Drive.

?

I then booted to the USB Flash drive on a laptop (Intel Based HP) and it booted normally to HAM PC:

?

?

?

?

I hope this helps.

I am using the hampc image 3.0.1b1 from the sourceforge repository. Pressing tab at the grub prompt lists all the possible commands and startx was not one of them. I tried to use the linuxefi command and tried all the files in the (hd0,gpt1)/efi partition with the response "bad magic number' for all of them.

Here's the hash (checksum) for the download. See if you can match this from what you downloaded.

Here's a howto article on how to calculate the SHA512 hash:?

Hi Gary,

?

???? That last bit of information helped.? Here is what I was able to find as I googled the error.? Bad magic number means that?when U-Boot tried to boot the UImage kernel image it found that the kernel image was not valid, i.e. the magic number it expected at the beginning of the image was not there or otherwise corrupted.??? I would at this point have to surmise that the image you are using may be corrupt.? It could be the download or the image you burned to the bootable device.? I am going to download the image myself real quick and see if I get the same error.? Give me about an hour and I will let you know the result.

I think the boot prompt will come up if you're holding down Shift. But, a corrupted download image will also cause this.

Hi "J",

You need to use Balena Etcher to flash the image. You can flash it to a USB flash drive or if you want it can replace / overwrite Ubuntu on your internal drive.

Dave,

?

Thanks for the reply and thank you for the all the work that it takes to build this OS package.

?

Looking at my 13 year old laptop file structure with just Xubuntu 22.04 installed, I see efi in the Boot folder. So, maybe just build on a non-efi platform might provide an image that works for both environments. And, maybe not.

Hi Bob,

You have an excellent point. It is on my radar to produce a legacy boot for HamPC.

I wish I could give you an exact timetable. But I am working on it. If there are other Linux developers on this list, please reach out to me.

Thanks.

Legacy FW Support for HamPC 3.0

ROBERT NORRIS AK5U

The fact that newer systems support efi in the BIOS doesn't make a difference to us that use Linux as a way to rejuvenate older PCs and laptops. So, does or has someone provided steps (easy ones I hope) to make this image usable once it is on a HDD or USB stick? I downloaded Xubuntu 22.04 and successfully installed it to this same laptop that won't even start the install.?

Looking for answers.
