SR-160 Vernier Dial Lubricaion

Hi All,
?
I am restoring an SR-160 that has been dormant for some time.? The vernier dial does rotate through it's full rotation but does so sluggishly, getting stuck periodically.? Does anyone have any suggestions regarding lubrication of the vernier dial mechanism (type of lubricant, places to lubricate, etc)?

Hi Matt,

First thing is to clean all the old lub off. This should be done with small artist brushes or the steel tube acid brushes dipped into cleaning solution. Don't use a spray cleaner. I use alcohol. Careful, not to get any on the dial face. The gears need very little lub. I use a toothpick and place a very small dot of white lub on each gear. Then rotate from stop to stop a few times to distribute the grease. A little is great, a little more is bad. If the dial is dirty, carefully clean a small area with just water and rag. If the dial will not clean up, overlays are available.

Hi Walt,
?
I have cleaned the old grease and added a small amount of white grease to the gears.? That has helped quite a bit.? However, the dial still sticks a bit.??
?
I also cleaned up the clutch plates.? Should I lube the clutch plates or leave them dry?

The clutch plates should remain clean and dry. Just keep working it from end to end, note position of the gears when it binds up and add a little more grease at that point.

Last resort:::?complete disassembly of the gear train and clean all the shafts. NOT?to be attempted unless you are very confident in your dexterity and mechanical skills.
