For the "intended" context of gear use, I'm not a big fan of leaving things as designed - in the event that the original design conflicts with my preferred operation.? A good example of that here is the KWS-1 transmitter.? For SSB it has MOX activation via VOX, foot or mic switch, or rotary switch.? For CW, by comparison, the ONLY option is rotary switch MOX.? Twist the 60 year old switch to transmit - and twist again for RX.? Repeat as needed for an enjoyable rag chew.? Huh?? Fortunately a relatively simple mod will allow external MOX activation, but in discussing? that mod, I had more email advising me not to do this out of a legacy consideration ("if Art intended it to work that way, it would have had that originally") rather than out of improving utility.? Plus, part of the ham ethos is to say "I wonder if this gadget can be used for that activity?"?
In the CW SS this year, I ran my Johnson Ranger and RME 6900.? On the Ranger, when doing S&P, it takes two hands - two rotary switches to throw before you can move the VFO.? I made over 500 contacts that way and at the end my wrists were sore and I put a lot of wear on the switches.? I spent the next couple of days figuring out a mod to fix that.? I recall when I was a new novice, I had several switches to throw to get from receive to transmit, including a knife switch to switch the antenna between my AT-1 and NC-60.? But, I was a bit younger then.
