Re: Who made these HV cap kits for the PS2000?

Another factor for doubters to consider.? Materials, manufacturing and underlying technology in general have made it easier to build better caps than 50 years ago.? I'm not saying that some of the cost-is-our-only-focus overseas makers are not building lousy caps - and there is the problem with "fake" caps (hence the prohibition of ebay as a source).? But if you are picking something out of a Mouser or Digikey catalog, for sure it's going to have better performance than just about anything that was built 50 years ago.

Agreed Jeff, this is also my understanding.??

I'm confident that at hallicrafters, unit price was at least equal to performance if not the primary goal.? Government contracts required high reliability, not consumer products so components were chosen accordingly.? It was a cutthroat? business, a penny saved was a penny earned.

Unless you are working on a SPS, the ESR of a new cap from a reliable source (that means Digikey, etc, and not ebay), as it applies to use in a old tube rig, will be absolutely satisfactory.? And the temp range, again in the tube rig context, is more about other components heating up the cap, rather than their internally generated heating as a result of the ongoing reformation process and the associated leakage.

Hi,

I have been taught that the lowest ESR is the best value. Never questioned that guidance.? I suppose you could call Hayseed and ask them about the ESR value of their caps.

How does one know if the ESR is the "best value" when the actual filter capacitor ESR is not specified by either Hayseed, hallicrafters or any of the original capacitor suppliers?? I can see the need for low ESR capacitors in some power supply applications where the capacitor is completely discharged in one cycle like the capacitors found in parallel gap welders, for example.? ?

Just how hot are these filter capacitors getting above ambient temperature from internal heating, during normal operation?

As well some of the best ESR values for electrolytics?used in our boat anchor power supplies. For those of you not familiar with the term ESR. Here is
a brief definition:
Equivalent series resistance?(ESR), also known as internal resistance, is a value representing the loss of useful energy in a simple electronic circuit consisting of a resistor and an ideal (perfect) capacitor. Technically speaking, the energy is not lost but is usually dissipated as undesirable heat. For those curious about this spec there is plenty of good reading on the?internet.?

Looks a nice job.

I printed these in abs for my ps2000 .
They use the capacitors suggested by Walt in his repair manual.?

This looks all new and aftermarket.? Wondering who did it.? Both my PS2000 have these.
