William Hall - Catawba VA - c1794 to Sept 1849

Hello Everyone! My story is a long one, so pack a lunch! Let me start out by saying I have DNA tested and am on the following platforms: Ancestry - CynthiaDriscoll 23&Me - Cynthi Hall MyHeritage - Cynthi Driscoll FTDNA - Cynthia Hall (married: Driscoll) GEDmatch: T753922 and my Paternal only kit is PT753922P1 I have a cousin who has (fully) yDNA tested through FTDNA and our Hall Haplogroup is: R-YP6368 (R-M269 - S424 - Z29552 - Little Scots Cluster, Otterburn, Northumberland, England). We descend from a Scottish Border Reiver Family. We are in FTDNA Hall Project Group: 019a2 (See FTDNA Hall Project: FamilyTreeDNA - Hall Families DNA Project Thanks to another cousin, we have a potential mtDNA Haplogroup for William's mother (through William's sister's descendants), which is: U4b1b1. Now that I have laid that out, I'll preface this next bit of info by saying 90-95% of Trees found across all platforms in regard to William Hall are wrong. This is due to several issues. The first being attributed to a man named George von Kromer who purchased a cabin back in the 1930s and wrote a booklet about the cabin and family who (allegedly) owned it. This is a man who had no ties to the Hall family by either blood or marriage. His story, titled, "History of the Cabin-Fort", was published in booklet form in the late 30s. A slightly edited version is contained in the book, "Places Near the Mountains," by Helen R Prillaman. This story, by Kromer, has not one ounce of truth. Nor does it give any citations or documents to confirm any of the information. The man took great liberties with the diaries of George Washington and added narrative to bolster his story. The Hall family that Kromer uses for the backstory is of a William Hall who was born c1701 and died in 1772. His will was filed, in what was then, Botetourt County. When this William came to Virginia, the land he purchased was in the bounds of Augusta County on a place called Whistle Creek, which is very near present-day Lexington VA. This area went through a few county changes. From Orange County, to Augusta, for a short time to Botetourt, and finally to present-day Rockbridge Co VA. William just happened to die when his land was contained in the bounds of Botetourt Co VA and this is where his Last Will was filed. His wife was Jean, and they had the following children: William Hall (c1729), Andrew Hall (c1731), Isabel Hall (c1735), Agnes Hall (c1737), [Captain] James Hall (c1739), John Hall (bef 1740), and Nathaniel Hall (bef 1740). Kromer implied in his booklet that my William Hall (c1794-1849) descended from the above William Hall (c1701-1772) but he never explained how. Besides the addition of words to Washington's diaries, Kromer also inserted a few words into William's (c1701-1772) last Will & Testament to improve his farce. Thanks to the yDNA testing we have been able to prove what I've known for the last 35 years that we are not related to the William (& Jean) Hall family of what eventually became Rockbridge. Their Haplogroup is: I-M223 and they are listed in FTDNA Hall Project in Family Group 023a. As I am sure you realize, the haplogroups of the 2 families are not compatible and therefore these 2 families are not related to each other. As fortunate as we are to have our Haplogroup, it has not helped us to advance our lineage - as my cousins closest yDNA match has a genetic distance of 6. The only immediate family of William's that we know of is his sister, Keziah. She was married in Catawba (then in Montgomery Co VA, now Roanoke Co VA) in 1817 to Samuel Ballard Cummins. Samuel & Keziah immediately went westward landing in Sullivan Co IN. Several of us have DNA connections to some of the descendants of Keziah. It would appear that William & his sister, Keziah, were raised by a man named William Ledgerwood. William Ledgerwood was a son of John Ledgerwood (mother unknown), who was born between 1764-1765 (per census records). William didn't marry until 1813. John Ledgerwood, his father, died in late 1805 or very early 1806 and William seems to have become the Head of the Family.

James Hall of Grant County, Indiana
My gr-gr-grandfather was James Hall who was born in North Carolina about 1800. He moved to Grant County, Indiana and married Rachel Moorman in 1831. He died about 1855. His children were proven by the 1850 census along with Grant County probate records. I can list them if anyone is interested. James' parents may have been William Hall and Mary Hiatt who were married 1785 in Guilford County, Indiana. DNA matches, along with circumstantial evidence, leads me to believe that this is true. My GedMatch number is A651310. Lorraine Hall Keith
