componet level repair manual
Hi James, I downloaded a very big file from this site I think, which was the full manual for each board in a series of scanned pages. The file is about 20 MB long!? I looked at the section dealing with the Receiver Module, which is named MYSCAN_20060313_0014.TIF. On pages 154 to188 is all the info for that board. I reckon you could find the link in the groups.io site and get the full manual.? I printed mine and bound it in a D3 binder. I also printed A3 size pages for the circuitry. It took me 18 months to get my 8920A up and running with no failures. Some modules are available through Ebay and other sources. Some of them are model specific and will upset the calibration of the unit, introducing more failures. If you get stuck, there is a firm in the US called Amtronix. Mail to Rick, I found him very helpful. Here is a link for him ??? Rick@.../??? The task of repairing the old HP gear is an ambitious one, requiring mil spec soldering skills for double layer boards, I used my Pace desoldering tool and a cctv camera to inspect the boards. I started by replacing the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply , which is an? OEM unit from a USA company called Artysyn. I? replaced the 3V battery in the Main CPU Boards, which needs replacing every 3 years or so. The whole instrument relies on the power supply, the 10Mhz OXCO, and the calibration. Calibration is achieved by inserting a proprietary disk and running the software. These disks are very very rare. They are not a standard disk. The HP part number is? E6380-10003.??? HP E6380-61811/ Rev. A.00.01. My unit had a faulty AF section plus several dirty connectors (corroded). I bought some from Rick and all is now well. Be careful to mark the boards and where they are plugged into, as they are calibrated and specific to your instrument. Lots of luck with the project James. all the best Bill Macham???
