Re: HP 8920A Firmware Upgrade Issue
I have used those images numerous times .
Believe they came straight from an ex-HP factory source years ago on the old Yahoo groups. Make sure you verify the ROM;s and the locations they are installed in.. The firmware on the signaling board may need to get updated as well and was included in the images.? You can always pull that board if in doubt. I usually backup the calibration EEPROM on the processor board first and make sure the write protect is on just in case. ( first DIP switch on the processor board ) I typically replace the batteries on the memory card as well while I am in there and often upgrade the memory size? if its the older minimum version. The unit should boot even with the smallest amount of memory installed but some of the test programs may not run |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Rick, I used a BP Microsystems BP-1148 to program (6) TC574000D IC's. Perhaps those images are mislabeled. If you could email the files that would be great.? Many thanks,? Re: 8924C video out using a GBS-8200 to vga questions
Hi Robert,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, it was the original NEC Multisync monitors I was thinking of. I have seen some on fleabay but didn't realise they would take full signal on the green input without separating the syncs first per the VGA standard. OK about some CRT types only that will sync at 19.2KHz - I didn't realise that. Yes I suppose a multi-standard broadcast monitor would do the job, but they're not cheap. Just out of interest, what "Standard" is the 19.2KHz o/p of the 8924C video and is there a particular reason for it? I've got a few different monitors I can try on the off-chance one might work, and was also going to see if a device I've got called an "Easycap" might work. It's a USB capture device for transferring video to a PC so it's worth a try. Being a cheapskate,? I'm in Long Sutton, South Lincolnshire and collected the 8924C from you a while back. Regards, Frank. |

Hi Frank, Where are you located? I might be able to help with a converter. |
Re: 8924C video out using a GBS-8200 to vga questions
Hi all,
I've been reading this thread with interest as I would like to get my 8924C screen to work on an external monitor. I was wondering if it is possible to just use an LM1881 to separate the syncs from the composite video out and feed them directly into the H & V inputs of a multisync VGA monitor which covers the 19.2KHz frequency? Has anyone tried it? Is it likely to work, or do I definitely need the GBS8200 effectively as a frame-store to shift the text to the right? Many monitors have an auto-adjust setting which centres the picture automatically, so that may work. Thanks, Frank. |
Re: Input module problem
Hello all,
I thought I would post an update on my progress with with the input module problem I previously reported above. Well, I've managed to sort the problem after some initial pointers from Robert G8RPI and it turned out to be a faulty op-amp U2A in the RF Peak Detector circuit, rather than the diode CR101A I originally thought. I replaced the 2 x double-diode packs CR100 &101, powered up the module from split-rail +/-12V via a breakout board plugged into J6 and made voltage measurements around the diodes and op-amps and the fault was still present. The only other component it could be was U2A, but there were some very odd voltage readings around U2A and U2B which took me a while to get to the bottom of. Apart from the fact that the op-amps in my module are AD826AR devices not LT1361CS8, the schematic in the manuals on here is incorrect or certainly different from my version of module build. The AD826AR devices are scarce now, but I managed to purchase qty 3 unused salvaged ones from a seller in France for 3Euros each. After replacing U2 all is well again and I'm in the process of reassembling the beast! I'll add the corrected schematic to the file area on here asap. Regards, Frank G0CFD. |

There were some sellers on ebay that offered an upgrade kit and PCMCIA "calibration" card. But those were usually for B models as the EPSON cards for A models are scarce. However the accuracy of such calibration is not going to be ideal. Your best bet is an external 100 watt 13 dB attenuator pad and make adjustment in the settings for the pad and cable.

I don't know what is involved swapping out the internal 5w pad for the 60w pad, but there went your good price.? There was a thread earlier where people were building their own.?
I have a 60w unit and I am using a 30db 300 watt external Bird attenuator for quick tests on HF radios and amps.? It is a good idea to use double shielded coax to reduce leakage. Do the math and get an external power pad, then you can do the math in your head what the actual power is and/or do the adjustment in the setup screen. |

Gee, given the context of what you think I am trying to do, I might or might not pursue the path you suggest because I am somewhat of a cheapskate.? I would want the customer to spring for them but I would like them to monitor before transmitting more often too. ? I would more likely keep a portable GPSDO to myself and be able to verify it's performance with other standards rather than leave it at a site where a Quantar was stolen.? I hate giving tools away.

Do you have a portable GPSDO for sale with a 10mhz sine output?? For cheap?? It would be a lot easier to use than other methods. I would probably trust the on-site high stability reference? more than the one in the 8920 that had been banging around and power cycled .?
