34401A issue
12
I have an Agilent 34401A which I've used at my bench for many years. Today I went to measure a 12 volt battery and it just started clicking. I tried it on a power supply and auto ranging works fine up to 12 volts where it starts clicking about twice a second. Trying manual range, going over the 10 volt range shows exactly zero volts to any input. I am guessing it tries autoranging higher, sees the zero, then tries to go lower, then repeats. This is only on DC volts. AC volts and resistance (didn't check current) are fine, for example I can plug the leads into an outlet and it shows 120 VAC just fine. Before I dig in, is anyone familiar with this fault? Peter

CLIP / Firmware for HP83751A/HP83752A
4
Hi, i got a HP83752A sweeper and want to retrofit the Mechanical Attenuator Option (1E1). I have a matching Attenuator, but i'm wondering how to enable it. There's a Keysight Document telling how to do that for Option 1E5 (Internal 10MHz timebase), but none for 1E1. Does anyone know how to enable that Option? Also does someone have a CLIP for these units? I only found service guides without schematics. If anyone has the firmware update disks/images that would also be very helpful, than i could take a peek at the Firmware. Thanks! Sven

Switched attenuator issue
3
I've noticed excessive through attenuation with my HP attenuator set (8497K / 8494H). The repeatability was out of spec. After switching there would be a difference of 0.1 to 0.2dB. I tried IPA on the RF relay switch contacts with no effect. I was hesitant to try anything more aggressive but with little to loose I applied Deoxit Gold ... and it fixed the problem completely. The spec for through attenuation is 0.4dB + 0.09dB/GHz & 0.6dB + 0.09 dB/GHz. The repeatability is now much better than spec. (I'd already replaced the o-rings)

HP 5245L counting/gate problems
9
I have several of the HP 5245L counters and until recently, had at least one working. Now it seems that the last ¡°working¡± counter I own has gone belly up. Two of them have the same problem, (the gate indicator isn¡¯t flashing and one of the two isn't counting). I have the manual and it gives some trouble shooting points to check but in some cases, it only states there is a problem with a board instead of providing a list of components that could be faulty. This appears to be a common problem, at least with two of mine. It may be common enough for one of you experts to have fixed it and remembers what component failed. If so, I would greatly appreciate some help. Tom. N5AMA

3457A calibration data dump / restore
3
Hello, I have a very nice 3457A which has a 40-year old battery. New batteries are quite inexpensive and easy to find, but I'm quite scared at the prospect of replacing the battery without first dumping the calibration data to a file, and having a way of reloading it if anything goes wrong during the replacement process. Someone already tackled the problem of storing the cal data on a PC (https://github.com/Niravk1997/HP3457A-Calibration-Dump-Utility-for-AR488-GPIB-Adapter) but I couldn't find anything about how to restore the data from the PC to the 3457A if the data is lost. Right now my 3457A is sitting there with a battery which is 40 years old, and counting ... Any help or pointer(s) would be sincerely appreciated ! Joel

8656B HPIB connector
5
Hi all, working on my 8656B sig gen, and managed to break the IDC Centronics connector , so the cable is no longer attached. Is there a suitable replacement available taht is not too ex[ensive. Have to replace teh mains socket as smoke came out, still waiting on that, and it cost over $86Aus from RS on its own.I don't want to spend more than the device is worth to fix it, not that I am likely to use this port Wayne VK2WDE

Looking for info on HP 10534C RF mixer component
7
Does anyone happen to have specs on this little mixer from the 1970s? It was used in the HP8552A IF section. I have a bunch, and may be able to use them in a project, but it would be nice to have specs. All I know now is the pinout and an example application as in the 8552A. Ed

Shipping overseas?
27
HP list, I have attempted to assist a current HP list member in Germany with boards from a 8660C. The Post Office is telling me they cannot ship electronics to Germany. (From the US). Parts, vintage, boards, doesn¡¯t matter. Do I have the customs form filled out wrong? Anybody have a explanation or know how to get this done? I did try UPS, they quoted a price which is a significant percentage of my monthly income. Thanks for any ideas, explanation, Gary WA2OMY

Looking to purchase one. It shows no display on the screen which I can deal with, but I can't seem to find in the manual anything about the bottom Instr Check lights. The left one stays on. Any knowledge about what causes this? Thank you, Scott

SMD S461, L266 on DC-DC converter - HP 02463-80901 ; what are these devices for?
HP 4263B LCR meter. It worked wonderfully for the past few years until last month when a total blank of display at turned on. Later on it had been turned on once again with correct measurements but one of the red LED 5V was lit. Now it was totally dead. I suspected that the Japanese made DC-DC converter 02463-80901 was the culprit since no output can be measured from this unit. There are two surface mount devices marked as S461 and L266; four legs components with plus on two pins. I had never seen any SMD like these. Are they diode or a twin capacitors? S461 was connected in parallel so it might more likely to be capacitor? Basically my problem of 4263B was exactly as the same as the following post: blown L266 with evaporaied carbon deposite? https://xdevs.com/pow/hp4263b_dcdc_pow/ Your input is greatly appreciated. Thank you! Yeun-Jung Wu

48-440 Hz AC power compatibility option (HP 8660B OPT 003) - acoustic noise (hum/buzz) from the unit?
6
My HP 8660B (subject of the instability issue now resolved) includes option 003 which is compatibility with 48-440 Hz power sources. The HP 8660B has a linear power supply (ca. 1970s, predates switchers), presumably to improve the ability of the unit to serve as ballast on a large ocean-going vessel, among it's other capabilities.) Question is this - the machine emits an acoustic (audible) noise after being on for a few minutes. I didn't pay attention to this before, but realized that the noise may be associated with the wide-range AC mains frequency compatibility - I figured it was just plates in the power transformer rattling. In my (now obsolete) work life (mostly in cable tv engineering), "ferroresonant" power transformers (used to adapt 60 Hz local mains power to the 60-90 Hz pseudo-sinewave power used in the cable tv hardline infrastructure to deliver power to inline amplifiers), the noise was similar. Does this (acoustic) noise ring a bell with anyone? Should I be concerned? The machine doesn't appear to exhibit any operating problems related to this (and I doubt has anything to do with the now-mitigated PLL issue). Thanks Dave
