8510C System Bus Address Error

Hi folks,

still working on the 8510C system.
I am encountering this "System Bus Address Error" and I don't understand why.
The system GPIB addresses are set correctly.
- The 8350 is properly addressed the 8510C
- The test set is properly controlled by the 8510C

Replacing the 8510C display unit by my old 8510B one, the system works properly, no errors.
GPIB system address settings are identical in the B and C.

Any ideas what that error could mean in this case?

Tom

What about the GPIB cable? Or the cable between IF Unit and Display
unit? You can also try to connect PC with a GPIB adapter to the port and
query the GPIB bus to see if the Display unit really has the correct
address.

Hi Razvan,

I had replaced the 85101C by the 85101B keeping all the cables the same, then the system worked.
So, no wiring problem. The problem must be within the 85101C. Adress settings were correct, too.

Tom

Try to open the case of the 85101C and see if some board moved and GPIB
internal flat cable is OK. You can also try to read the 85101C with a
USB-GPIB adapter to see if the GPIB of the Display unit really works.

I have no other ideas at the moment.

Hello!

What might be the case here is the address select DIP switch! Try to switch all positions several times and set back to the right address again.

These Grayhill DIP switches are a nightmare... the contacts get corroded/oxidized and have no connection! I've already replaced two of them on different HP boxes! Just don't trust them and the symptom is a wrong address.

Cheers!

I'm very new to my 8510C but I had a similar issue when I first assembled and fired up my system.

If I've understood the issue (which I may not have!) the problem is with the 85101 (C vs B) not any peripheral device?

The 'B' runs the system fine but leaving all wiring the same and swapping to the 'C' gives the failure message?

While I agree with Leon that GPIB address DIP switches are often a problem generally, I do not think the 85101 uses them, all addresses are set through the menus.

This is from memory as I'm not in front of the thing but these are the steps I went through to untangle things:

I assume you have you checked that the 85101C addresses are set correctly in the 'System' menu both in the the 'HP-IB Address Listing' *and* the 'HP-IB Config' menu is set to 'Factory'? I think this latter can chose between 'User Config' and 'Factory Config' and defines what happens when reset either by HPIB bus commands or pressing the 'Preset' button.

I did a 'Recall' + 'More' + 'Factory Reset' to get things to a known state, then checked that the 'HPIB Config' was set for 'Factory' (underlined) and hit the preset button.

That seemed to work although I have a vague memory of having to clear the red error message using the 'Entry Off' key?

That can be 8350 or its plugin old firmware version.

Check that you have proper firmware:

Firmware rev 6 for 8350B main frame - press [SHIFT] [49]

Firmware rev 7 for 8359X series plug ins - press [SHIFT] [99]

Firmware rev 6 for 835XX series plug ins - press [SHIFT] [99]

Hi folks,

problem solved. Previously, I only checked the GPIB addresses of present instruments.
I have now set the GPIB addresses of not-connected units (like the second source which I don't have) to 31 and the error is gone.
GPIB works flawlessly.

Btw, meanwhile I have also swapped the dead CMOS battery. Now the clock keeps ticking...

Two more questions:
1.
Upon power-up the unit comes up in factory state, i.e. in hold state. I would like it to come up sweeping. How can I change this?
Setting the user preset state is not sufficient.

2.
Is the low frequency behavior of the 8517A test set normal? I remember that some units have wideband bridges with no drop at low frequencies while others have couplers showing the drop at low frequencies. I'm not sure which type the 8517A is.

The 8517 manual answers question 2. The b-channels have a low frequency cut-off. So, that's normal.
I'll ask the other question in a separate thread.
