Years ago, I bought a power meter from a test equipment vendor on ebay.
This was listed as for parts, will not power up.
When it arrived, it did not appear to power up.
While checking it out I found the 110/220 power switch selector in the 220 Volt position.
This was from a US company and it was shipped to a US address.
This did not fix the "problem".
What finally fixed the problem was to adjust the contrast control ob the rear panel.
Did I feel bad for the seller, no.
He should have known how to setup the equipment as he made his living selling test equipment.

I just considered it a good deal and continue to use it.

Re: I bought a working HP3400A, however it doesn't.

Ebay is trying to improve their image. They want their
sellers to stop playing "catch me if you can" and trade fairly.

Ebay doesn't want their buyers to worry about being cheated
out of their money... They simply want them to buy and buy and buy...

Ebay gave sellers essentially three categories to use when
selling on their platform:

New (working), Used (working) and For parts or repair.

Ebay makes sellers guarantee that their items are listed for
sale in the correct category.

If you sell something on ebay as used, and you don't know it
to be in good working order, you are gambling: Your bet is
that your item works, your stake is the price of return shipping.

I love it that you are ethical, Mike.

I too try to live my life ethically. But I don't believe that
living ethically requires one to be a sucker.

If you believe that living ethically requires you to also be a
sucker, then yes, our values and ethics are different.

Is that what you would have done if you bought the meter from HPAK?

Ebay's rules are binary: Items listed as "USED" will work as if they
were new, or the seller will refund the sales price plus return
shipping.

Sellers are forever rolling-the-dice on that rule. They know that
ebay is strict in its enforcement... but they also know that they
will lose 60% of the value if they sell items as ASIS, for repair or
parts...

As a seller, I hate ebay's terms. As a buyer, I am quite happy with
them. Which is exactly how ebay wants it.

Re: "ADDITIONAL STANDARDS ARE NEEDED" when using E-Cal

Wayne thanks - yes I found your firmware, saw that it was the same as mine. And I have verified that the jumper does not affect my setup. The old module SN 141 did not have it so I added it but it didn't affect anything (that module was properly identified by the VNA but had an RF problem). The new module SN 898 already has that jumper installed. There must be some other configuration issue I guess.
Thanks

HPAK stands for <H>ewlett <P>ackard <A>gilent <K>eysight

Members here often abbreviate the names that Bill and Dave's

I have one of these that is faulty. There is only the user manual available & when I asked Keysight about repair costs they offered to repair it for the cost of a new unit. Seems these are basically? scrap if faulty. Mine works perfectly EXCEPT the RF output is ~30dB low. Looks as if one of the IC attenuators has died.? Perhaps one day I will try getting these off the PCB & reworked properly. One day when the roundtoit reaches the top of the pile.

It sucks to sell on eBay. The meter was probably jostled around in
shipping and just needed cleaned up, like most 50-60 year old test

Re: I bought a working HP3400A, however it doesn't.

The unit was advertised as "fully functional and functions as intended" "unit is in good condition, removed from working environment".
However, the seller had no knowledge to back this up. "no power cord, unable to test"
I received the unit, it did not function as intended, 10 out of 12 ranges were dead.
I was not going to disassemble a unit and attempt a repair on a unit I intended to send back. Sending it back would mean I now spent
$42 in shipping (both ways) and have nothing except a bad experience.
Keeping it and finding I could not fix it, would mean I spent $129 on a piece junk. The $70 reduction, means I have I'm spending $55. an addittional
$13 (over the shipping) on the gamble that I might be able to fix it. That was a gamble I was willing to take.
? I talked to the seller over the phone, he was more than happy to reduce the price, he did not want it returned.
I happen to have won the gamble, but I didn't know or think it would be that easy.

Hi Dan,

I suggest you check that you have a jumper between pins 5 and 18 of the DB25 as I mentioned in message which has caught me out with one of my modules.
AFAIK 1.00 is the only version available for the 85060C, in fact I uploaded the software diskette for that version to the Files section a year or two back.

Good luck and I hope you manage to figure it out

I agree, and you and I could've fixed it, as did the OP. But when something is advertised as working (and note, I'm just assuming that it was, based on the OP's post...I will stand corrected if that wasn't the case) and it's not working as advertised, it's broken, no matter how simple the fix. What's simple to us isn't necessarily simple to everyone.
