Re: HP 8341A sucessfully FIXED!
开云体育Hi Edmany thanks! Yes, I was really lucky with my YTO. However, I am a bit afraid that the YTO could definitely fail some day and I would like to have a spare, but there's none :-( I even thought whether it would be possible to construct a semiconductor-based,
compatible replacement, but this would be a really large and complex project. I have some ideas, though :-)
Of course my web page will be kept online. I have several projects I am working on, including a 5342A microwave counter and a 8568B spectrum analyzer, both waiting for repair. I will also present these on my page.
I would like to upload my the pics of the YTO, however, I forgot how that works; I probably even have an account here, but I have no idea what credentials I used. This is because posting to the group also works even if you forgot your account details :-)
I will try to figure things out and upload the pictures!
Best
Tobias

Wow. Nice work, Tobias. Sometimes we learn the most when things seem hopeless. Your reasoning was right that there was nothing to lose by taking a chance on opening the YTO, and you came up with a great alternative to get around the problem. |
8568B YTO unlocked
开云体育Hi allI have a 8568B spectrum analyzer which has some strange flickering traces sometimes. I found out that the traces do not flicker if the frequency span is narrow, for instance 1 MHz. As soon as I use a wider span, the traces are kind of unstable.
I then opened the RF section and found following behaviour: with a large span, the YTO unlocked LED flashes sometimes, however, I get no YTO warning on the screen.
If I lower the span to 1 MHz or less, the YTO unlocked LED is off all the time and the traces on the screen are nice and stable.
Is it normal that, when larger spans are used, the YTO unlocks from time to time? If not, why don't I get the YTO unlock message on the screen?

Re: Fake fire New
开云体育I too expected that electronics
professionals and hobbyists would be above that sort of nonsense
and would refrain not only from indulging in conspiracy theories
and political rants, but also from posting them in electronics
groups/forums.
Unfortunately I was unpleasantly surprised by the postings in sci.electronics.design, and it appears some people would like that to spread to here. Would everybody please discuss anything resembling politics and conspiracy theories elsewhere. Enough said, I fervently hope. On 15/10/17 16:37, George Onufer amatec@... I hope you plan to keep that web-page available - it's a good story and resource with good pix of the YTO innards, for future reference. I'd recommend you also post the images to the photos department here. Ed |
Re: Fake fire New
开云体育Greetings,I have been reading some of the posts regrading the inaccurate reporting regarding the Keysight plant in Santa Rosa.
While I find inaccurate reporting as disturbing as most of us, I must also note that I am growing weary of this ongoing discussion.
I am taking the time to add to this conversation to suggest our efforts and energies might be put to better use if we can discover how we might help Keysight employees who have suffered loss as a result of these fires.
I know of at least one Keysight family who lost their home and possessions.
While it is reasonable to believe that most of the material losses will be covered by insurance there is, without question emotional loss and perhaps we can send some simple, yet supportive and encouraging gifts, to the Keysight campus for those
that suffered losses.

Ken

HP 8341A sucessfully FIXED!
开云体育Hi all,
probably some of you have seen that I had some problems with a 8341A. It was indeed the YTO which failed! But, I was incredibly lucky to fix the YTO. I also did a front panel RF output retrofit on my machine. Some pics of the YTO and stuff can be found on my page, if someone is interested :-) Now I can proceed to my next project, a 5342A frequency counter (hopefully not a blown sampler) and a 8568B spectrum analyzer with blurry focus on the graticule. Restoring HP 1740A scope, strange waveforms seen, assistance please?
Hi all, I've been a member for a while but lurking in the background while working on the scope and looking out for any discussions about a 1740A taking place. I now have the scope in a running condition after replacing 2 faulty transistors and now while testing the scope with the 1V test connection I discover that channel B works as expected but channel A works OK up to 0.2V on the volts/div switch, moving to 0.5V and upwards the trace goes odd.? I was wondering if anyone could point me to the area that I need to be looking at on channel A to cure the problem. I have uploaded photos of? both channels with the settings on 0.5V and 1V so you can see the problem? Re: Fake fire New
Please please keep politics and conspiracy theory rhetoric away from this group.
If I want rants and abusive postings, I can find gobs of them on sci.electronics.design, surrounding a few technical gems. At least one of the (other) contributors to this thread can be found "over there". Although it isn't directly relevant to this group, one of the good things about working at HP was that any such statements would have been quickly and effectively stamped on. That contributed to a pleasant working atmosphere. |
Re: Fake fire New
I have friends in the areas affected by the fires that I haven't been able to contact. I am praying for them, and the others who are affected.

It was a commercial TV station. We pay for it, whenever we buy something sold by their sponsors. They are supposed to be professionals, not some hack, with a free blog. They just make things up, rather than actually do their job of investigating the news before reporting it. I worked as a Broadcast Engineer and radio & TV stations. Shoddy work like this, is the main reason that I left that field. If I did my job as poorly as the 'News' the stations would be off the air more than they were on.

If it ran then failed after a little time I would tend to suspect a tantalum capacitor is shorted or shorting.? Keep that in mind when troubleshooting.? The guide might get you to the proper area then look carefully for burned caps or other components before digging in super deeply.
