Re: Need original Service Manual of 8970B Noise Figure Meter
Artek has the scan of both the operator and service manual for
$15.00 USD.
His quality is excellent.

Re: Power Switch Button for HP 1631D
Hi Dave Some time ago, for mine, I redid one using a plastic profile, folded with hot air, to which I then pasted a button. It is not the original but it works. I had made one as a spare, if you want I can send it to you.

Re: HP 8720D - Debugging story
Derek, if I had to make a guess, I would say that the previous owner did a DIY installation of the "8720DU Opt. 000 Peformance Update Kit". That would explain many of the problems you are seeing (pinched cable, heat sink, missing options in the firmware, and maybe more). Do a web search for document no. 08720-90372. This describes the conversion to the new CPU board and data entry into the EEPROM.

need original Service Manual of 8970B Noise Figure Meter
Hello friends, I'm based in Italy (for who should decide to help me...) and I have some issues around my 8970B, standard version (without options). The only PDF copy of the Service Manual of this version, which is available in the Web, was scanned in a bad way:
- especially the block and schematic diagrams, which are originally deployed on folded sheets, are truncated at?the left/right sides;
- the inside photos are too dark;
- the PCB pictures are too light and impossible to read the tracks.
No way to find a good copy in the Keysight's Web site. I ask you if anybody got a good scanned version or could borrow me an original paper manual, that I could scan in the best way and then share with you, once the job has been completed. Obviously, I should pay the shipping costs or consider other requests. Thank You in advance, Alberto, IZ2EWV

Power Switch Button for HP 1631D
I am missing the button on the end of the
power switch on my HP 1631D. It can still be turned on by
pushing the switch with a screw driver but doesn't look the
best.
Does anyone know if these switch buttons can
be sourced or is it a 3D print job? I don't have the CLIPs for
the unit so I can't identify the switch number but it looks like
the shaft on a standard push button switch except the shaft is
at 45 degrees (looks like a diamond from the front) and the
standard push button is generally not contoured.
Thanks

1) You have your Xs and Ts transposed.
2) Looks like it crosses to a CXT2222A currently in stock
at Mouser and likely others. The "extra" lead in the body is
just like the tab on a TO-220 case; in this case it's the
collector as is the center pin.

I am assuming it is a SMD style

Re: HP 8720D - Debugging story
I've done some basic testing and found a few fun things.
1) The blue data to the LCD is not connected 2) The Source Out -> In jumper on the back is cracked and the loss is too high below 500 MHz for the PLL to reliably work. Swapping jumpers makes the PLL lock reliably so I need a replacement but the system seems ok 3) The CPU heatsink was installed without ever removing the plastic sheet on top of the thermal paste!
The CPU fan for my 8720D is a Sunon AVD0504B2-8. It is mechanically different from the one you say is on the 8720ES. Looking at it there's a lot of lateral play on the fan axis so it's unsurprising that it's loud when the VNA is on it's side. Disappointing for what seems to be a quality fan, but good enough for it's usual use. I'd like to source a spare, but it's a lower priority now.
I borrowed a calibration kit and was able to make full two port measurements that match expectations between 500 MHz and 2 GHz. The calibration seemed good up to 20 GHz, but I need a better DUT to check that. I'm making a Beatty Standard this week to test with.
A replacement BR-2/3A battery arrived and will get installed tonight.

Not much out there on line. I mostly need to know the operating voltages for the power amplifier, the LO, and the proper PIN switch drive topology.
