Without digging through all the details the basic difference is as you describe - the M has a separate transformer/regulator supply for the complete reference-both the oven and the oscillator etc run as long as it is plugged into the AC supply. In early versions of the L the only the oven runs continuously-the oscillator does not.
Not sure re later versions of the L but there was an upgrade kit that put the 10 MHz 10811A OCXO in both the 5245L and the 5248. With that in place I think the oven and the oscillator both run continuously.

The original reference in the 5245L was 1 MHz and the 10811A upgrade kit had an extra divider to get down to 1 MHz.
Don't think there are any other significant differences but would have to look at the books to find out. Don't know the 5248 at all sorry.

I have an L and an M and their handbooks-plus a video amp and a 500 MHz plugin- looking for a 5255 12 GHz plugin (cheap!) I have a 5257A 18GHz xfer osc plugin but it's naffed. Only want the 5255 to be able to log 10 GHz readings over time- with the D/A converter chart recorder combo. I have an EIP 545 but it's BCD output option seems to be pretty rare.

Thanks for looking that info up. This transformer is probably from
something else.

Some extra info that might help identify it is that the terminals come
out of the transformer case in five round "bulkheads" lettered "A" to
"E". The "A" group has four terminals which I think are a pair of
input windings (for 120 or 240, I guess). The next three groups are
all five terminals each and the last group is just two terminals. Each
grouping is numbered sequentially from 1. I've looked at several
different HP scope manuals on the BAMA web site and cannot find this
number but nor can I find any schematics that use a letter-number
terminal identification scheme.

Input 25-50 MHz(10-75 useful) with 1-3 volts ex 50 ohm source
Output 50 ohms nominal and -19 dBm minimum for any harmonic number between 1 and 10
Which doesn't quite stack up with the quoted output frequency range as 50-500 Mhz but I guess it's near enough!
Intended as an accessory for the 5100A.

Interesting point.? I?just checked my service manuals, and it appears that there is indeed an?attenuator-correction ROM in the 8566B.? The HP?guys didn't cut any corners on this piece of gear!??It?is a separate part installed on A12, the front-panel keyboard assembly.? (A12U8, to be specific.)?

The zipfile I posted contains only the main operating firmware, from the 68000 CPU board.? I'm pretty sure that the images aren't serialized or otherwise tied to the specific instrument they came from.

Talking about HP8601As.... I have a couple of them (50 Ohm versions; be sure the one you find is not a 75 Ohm version!) but, unfortunately, one has a bad output power amplifier. I wonder if somebody has a parts unit which could act as a donnor of that part.

I've submitted the EPROM firmware from my HP8566B to Bruce Lane's archive:

Filename is hp8566b_9_29_86.zip . These image files are from my own 8566B

I run a good-sized FTP archive that currently contains, among other things,
EPROM (firmware) images for Tektronix test gear that they no longer make or
support. This is done to provide a repository of image files that one can
use to make a new EPROM if one should fail (yes, they do fail on occasion).

By sending me an archive with 8566B EPROM images in it, John Miles has made
it clear that doing the same for HP stuff would probably be a good idea. So
be it! I welcome contributions for the archive subject to the following
conditions.

(1) Any firmware or software sent should be for equipment that HP/Agilent
no longer manufactures or supports.

(2) If what you're sending is related to current equipment, it must be
publicly available for download from HP/Agilent as well. In other words,
HP/Agilent needs to have given permission, in some way, for its release.

(3) Submissions should be compressed with ZIP or a similar scheme. Files
with .exe extensions will be rejected by my firewall, so choose carefully.

(4) My spam filters have been known to be overzealous. If you try to send
me something, and it bounces, try sending me a note (WITHOUT the file
attachment) to kc7gr at qsl dot net (my backup address). Include the bounce

you'll be able to get through.

For downloading, the host is ftp.bluefeathertech.com. Log on as 'anonymous'
(minus the quotes), and send your E-mail addy as your password. The path is

Please keep in mind the following limitations.

(1) Download speed for anonymous logins is capped at 128K, and there's a
limit of five simultaneous logins permitted. This is done to make the most
