Hi Robert,
I got out the 140A and found it to not be worth fooling with. The top, bottom, and one side cover are missing along with both handles. It looks like it was being used for parts to repair other units. The plugins do seem ok, but I can't test them without the 140A. Both plugins are now on eBay, auctions 3817471981 and 3817472794. I'll give you a report on the 851B when I get to it.

Hi:
I joined this group on the 17th and asked for a daily digest, but none
have arrived, so have missed a few postings.
I repaired my synth many years ago by replacing the SRD with the
biggest slowest one I could find. But it has died again.
The problem is in getting a SRD with a lifetime that's long enough to
work with a 1 MHz input signal. Since diode lifetime goes up with
temperature, HP used a heater to increase the lifetime and thus get a
stronger set of combs out of the diode.
The idea is that during fordward conduction the diode stores charge
and when the input polarity reverses the diode keeps conducting
(because of the stored charge). When the stored charge is all removed
the diode "snaps" to the reverse voltage. In the ideal case the
stored charge runs out when the reverse voltage is at it's negative peak.
In this case that would take a huge amount of charge storage and so
it's a case of the more charge the higher the output.
If someone knows of a large long lifetime SRD (or it may be called a
fast PIN, or noise diode) that may be a good choice.

I'm sure a new SRD will be impossible to find :-( I may have to find

on the way to me from Joe VE7LBI.
Question - I zero the readout after a 30minute warmup. All ranges
read 0000 with the + & - flashing alternately. The Int Check -8000
is also set per the precedure. It will stay like that (zeroed) all
day. If I turn it off then back on the next day - the zero
calibration is off - not by much - sometimes +0001 or -0002. I can
zero it again - and it will stay like that all day. Is this normal
or am I being anal about a +35 year old instrument?

I have already received a number of replies about my sick 4260A.
Thanks to the group for their efforts and to the individuals for
trying to obtain parts or another unit for me. Being located where I
am, it is almost impossible to obtain parts for anything, let alone
an obscure, old piece of test equipment.
I am also looking on ebay, so if anyone spots a 4260A anywhere, let
me know, although just the resistor would be better due to the high
cost of postage to Australia.

If you happen to know anyone who lives near Norfolk, Virginia, the following gov't auction lot might be of particular interest:
Bidding opens 5/18 and closes 5/20 at 5 PM.
It looks like that auction lot contains some very nice equipment, in unusually-good condition.
The HP 4260A Bridge has a condition code of B4, which should mean that it's working fine!

So, if anyone would like me to attemp a part-number xref, email me.
By the way: I have an HP 608D, too (and all THREE of the military PDF manuals for it). It's a big, gorgeous 0.5 MHz to 510 MHz signal generator (or, in some cases, apparently, 10 MHz to 410 Mhz). Mine was still almost perfectly calibrated, when I got it! (It's for SALE, too...). That one (the HP 608D) is also known as the AN/USM-44A, with the primary unit also known as the TS-510A/U.

Greetings All,
I am a new member of the group and am looking forward to an enjoyable
time here.
I have a large inventory of HP boat anchors which I want to dispose of.
Some I want to sell as functional units, others might get parted out if
there is any market for these parts. There are over 60 units consisting
of these models: 130C, 140A, 1900A, 200CD, 214A, 302B, 342A, 400D, 400H,
411A, 415B, 428A, 431B, 5210A, 523C, 606A, 608C, 608D, 612A, 614A, 616A,
618B, 626A, 694A, 851B, 8690A, and probably a few others.
Any suggestions for disposing of this would be appreciated. I also need
manuals for most models and there are just too many to buy them. I think
that there are downloadable manuals for the equivalent military units
but I don't know the military model numbers. Is there a cross reference
list available?

Hello Morris!
In the Synthesizer Driver,
there is a step recovery comb generator which was driven by the 1MHz
Signal. From those comb generator the ouput was filtered through a
lot of filtersbanks to filter out the many frequencies that are
available at the outputconectoRS at the rear.
I expect that something around the SRD was wrong, the SRD is located
(when i rememer right) in an oven, too so maybe that oven is defective.
But maybe the normal oven for the xtal has a little overshoot, too or
is defective.
I have the Manuals for those both units at our Ham-Radio clubstation.
I have to look there in the next days.
